@davidgerard@circumstances.run I remember when this guy was considered a difficult but highly skilled developer working on a file system that has a real chance of becoming, if not the standard on Linux, at least as commonly used as Btrfs. And then he was banished from kernel development so hard Linus had to invent a new categorization of module specifically for bcachefs and nothing else. And now whatever the fuck this shit with the "AI girlfriend" is. Kent Overstreet's on a mission to torpedo his credibility as hard as possible.

@davidgerard@circumstances.run You know I'm starting to think that expecting the architects of a data silo to understand how to make a coherent decentralized protocol that actual humans can deploy is actually stupid.

AI and also a spicy take on a programming language that's divisive.
https://github.com/Perl/perl5/pull/24619/files Not surprised. Perl sucks anyways and to be honest if anyone actually can write it without a machine that's impressive because Perl is genuinely just incomprehensible so the one programming language in the world I'd think would accept LLM extruded contributions is indeed Perl. #NoAI #LLM #Perl #programming #AI #GenAI

new blogpost, on AI policy
@alexia@shrimp.starlightnet.work I genuinely fail to comprehend how it's even possible to think that an entirely non-deterministic plagiarism machine is remotely comparable to, well, literally any feature in an IDE from before they tried to normalize the non-deterministic plagiarism machine.

@rose@pl.pinkro.se @moses_izumi@fe.disroot.org I like the Pacman package manager the most and am currently on Artix as a result of that but I am also considering switching again at some point but I don't know what to. I like Void fine for the most part but the package selection is kinda weak IMHO and Gentoo is cool but I genuinely just do not vibe with how Portage works. For the record, yes, I know about the weird conspiracism many Artix users take part in. It seems to be nearly unavoidable in any Linux distribution space that doesn't use systemd (I even saw a bit of it in Void Linux spaces). I try to just ignore the noise.

@joe@f.duriansoftware.com Apparently that instance is defederated from Wafrn so I'll just say this reply here. I've been afraid that Linux has been moving in such a ridiculous direction where every program is its own container and everything else even before vibecoding became a thing purely because of the fact that a lot of people are for some reason deciding that OCI will solve every possible problem on Linux and therefore just make everything an OCI image don't ask just more containers. Needless to say I don't even have Flatpak installed on my system and even if Snap could run on s6 (it can't) I still wouldn't have it installed.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social It will never not piss me the fuck off that criticism of systemd is still almost universally written off as just neo-Nazi shit when, like guys. Guys. GUYS! The evidence that it's not a product to be trusted has been there for years and now that the entirety of Claude Code has leaked revealing that it's sloppy through and through I'm sure that won't change fucking anything because it's simply much easier to dismiss it all as just Nazis being Nazis. Because the idea that systemd is simply a bad project is apparently impossible. #Guess-what-motherfuckers-I-was-right #I'm-tired-of-being-right-in-only-my-negative-predictions #for-once-can-a-prediction-of-mine-that-turns-out-to-be-true-be-one-that-isn't-the-worst-case-scenario? #Unix #Linux #systemd

Debian of all fucking projects using the chatbot is the worst possible outcome because now that makes it look normal and acceptable to other projects purely because Debian does it and enough people still think that that means it must be fine since Debian moves so slowly.

@coolbean@brain.worm.pink @rose@pl.pinkro.se Basically, KDE used an IPC bus called DCOP, GNOME used CORBA, they were entirely incompatible with each other, they merged to create D-Bus, and because the now deprecated HAL adopted D-Bus too that caused it to metastasize into being the only IPC that matters on modern Unix. Despite being as unfit for any purpose as humanly possible.

@zzt@mas.to I agree with almost all of this except for folding phones because those can be good. It's possible. But I still prefer the flip ones because "large screen phone (not tablet, phone) but folds up into a smaller space" is something I benefit from personally. Otherwise you're on the money here. The cryptographic signing whatever the fuck this is meant to be is stupid as fuck.

@rose@pl.pinkro.se When I saw that postmarketOS was actually, genuienly deciding to switch to systemd I had several questions and they were all variants of "what the fuck is wrong with these people and why do they think that building their entire future on the init system that specifically says in its own documentation on the musl compatibility that it's to be treated as experimental and not expected to be there?" Because that's genuinely the only thing I could think when I saw it. Because it's so far from being a good idea. Because it's the worst idea.

if you make a joke about unable to decrypt message i will mute you
@doskel@masto.doskel.net I'm not going to make this into a joke about decrypting messages. We've all seen them. So instead I'll lay out some of my other issues with Matrix and as I've had an account since 2018 I am pretty well familiar with it. First, home servers seem to just always suck. Maybe that's just a me problem but I've been on a few and they all have the same problem where they are slow as molasses. Maybe this would be fixable if I could host my own but I cannot do that so that's not an option. Second, the client problem. Element is just downright bad, the single worst chat program I have ever used (and I've used bizarre single purpose ones that exist for one single small community that decided to larp as AIM for no reason). FluffyChat is the closest to being good but it's still extremely slow and has bizarre UI decisions that I just do not get at all. I've never used Cinny but the fact that it's an Electron program doesn't exactly inspire confidence in me. I also remain extremely uneasy about the fact that Matrix is controlled by New Vector, New Vector are incompetent scum, and it seems like the protocol is deliberately held back to make New Vector's proprietary bullshit look better. The ecosystem of Matrix in general just gives me a dreadful mouthfeel of the exact kind of techbro brained nonsense that already infests so many other interesting on paper projects. Also comparing Signal and Matrix is just a category error and this is a hill I am willing to die on.

@zzt@mas.to @pastelfluffyfox@meow.social I maintain that Mozilla lost the plot sometime around 2015 when they inexplicably decided to kill off XULRunner and with it much of the Mozilla ecosystem in favor of trying to chase the smartphone market (???????????) and since then they've made insane decision after insane decision after insane decision and the only reason I even still use Firefox at all is because it has the extensions I need and I don't want to contribute to the problem by using something based on WebKit. The crowning achievement of their insane decisions is and forever will remain firing the entire Rust team (which was the future of the entire fucking company) so the CEO and chairwoman of a non-profit could be paid a higher salary in the middle of the fucking plague.
