Our organizers wrote a petition to the House of Commons, sponsored by MP Jenny Kwan, to stop the accelerated push for AI infrastructure and put power back in the hands of communities. All Canadian citizens and residents are welcome to sign! Please share widely! https://www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-7550 And please note that the House sends a follow-up email with a confirmation request before signatures are counted, so check your inboxes! #canada #cdnpoli #NoAI #BigTech #DataCentres #DataCenters

I went to check my Amazon things (because I am updating some banners) and found this - my book has been added to "Amazon Bestsellers in Disability Art" as number 21! :D Only thing that dims my joy, are the 8(?) AI books ahead of mine. So...if you would like to help bring forth actual art from a real disabled human - please buy my book and leave it a review! <3 And share, thank you! https://www.amazon.com/Idiopathic-HypersomNIA-Prison-Sleep-NIA/dp/9528818390 #Disability #NoAI #FuckAI #DisabledArtist #Bookstodon #Art #Comic #ComicBook #LGBTQAI+

#Gentoo has a strict #NoAI policy, so our projects are slop-free. Unfortunately, these days you cannot run an up-to-date system without tons of random slop packages, because everyone insists on using that crap. Gentoo supports a whole bunch of architectures that probably every other distribution dumped so far. Unfortunately, these days the available software list is shrinking, as everyone insists on adding some random meaningless dependencies on #RustLang (like using uv-build, which is the single most harmful meaningless #Python project ever created). Gentoo has a strong upstream cooperation policy. However, these days I'm afraid to file issues, because just too often they just trigger more slop. I miss the "good" old days where the worst you could expect is some toxic asshole. The state of #FreeSoftware is truly depressing. There is little joy in distribution work these days. You're overwhelmed with shit, burned out and end up doing a shitty job. And it's bad for your health. #FLOSS

One of the things AI translation is spectacularly bad at is character voice. A character in a novel does not merely say things. They have habits. Favourite turns of phrase. Odd little colloquialisms. A particular rhythm. Maybe they are dry, breathless, pompous, tender, sarcastic, provincial, flamboyant, or gloriously weird. AI tends to turn all of that into statistically plausible soup. A human translator can look at a character and think: No. This is how this person talks. And then recreate that voice in another language without losing what made it theirs in the first place. That is what translation is supposed to do: change the language while keeping the person. This is one of the reasons I am still fighting for human translation, especially for literature, science, and all the wonderfully strange things that deserve better than AI slop. And yes, I am still trying to keep my little human translation business afloat. 🌱 If you would like to help me keep doing this work, my fundraiser is here: 💜 [https://ko-fi.com/thepurpleoctopus] Sharing it helps enormously, too. Every little signal that human translation still matters counts. 🐙📚 #HumanTranslation #TranslationMatters #LiteraryTranslation #NoAI #SupportHumanWork

@fp@mstdn.social I just spotted one on here, too. By someone with a profile photo generated by AI and who mentioned explicitly in his bio « you shouldn’t have given me ChatGPT ». So incredibly disappointing #noAI

“Don't even get me started about how expensive it would be from a compute and capital perspective to train new generations of models on cross-sectional images with >GB files sizes, cross reference those models with the underlying clinical data, gain regulatory approval for mass access to imaging data, and the inevitability of model drift as new generations of imaging hardware and procedures continue to roll out. Oh, and legal liability, which would require a congressional act of god to immunize them from. Trust me: I will be doing this field for a long time to come, and you too will be doing yours. Do not believe these out of touch plutocrats.” #NoAI

Today is #BandcampFriday and that means a little self-promo. The music I made is based in hope, dreams, longing for a better world and the societal will to make it so. No sampling involved except the cult film quotes. #NoAI #Music #MIDI #DarkAmbient Thank you for listening, and boosting! https://debonairetoast.bandcamp.com

It occurs to me that the reason people love to use "AI" is because they don't want to/don't know how to deal with mental friction. It's work to sort out what you believe when faced with conflicting information. So much simpler if the universe just gives you the solution, right? Why spend a moment of your life wrestling with cognitive dissonance when the spicy autocorrect generator can tell you what to think. But isn't the friction the point? Isn't sorting through opposing points of view & data the way we form our understanding of the world & ourselves? Isn't considering how odd shaped thoughts might fit together how creativity happens? There is a saying I learned as a PT student studying anatomy: form follows function. Bones and muscles that are used are remodeled to be better at that purpose. Cease using them & atrophy is the result. Our minds also follow this rule. Remove all need to actively think and lose the ability to think. I won't use "AI"-- at all. Not for simple web searches, not to research or write my novels. Because how you form the question & how you analyze the answer in light of everything else you believe is the point. Another analogy: you can't stop or change direction if you're driving on a road with no friction. You'll just eventually crash. #noAI

@danlew@androiddev.social Had to look that up. Yup, software update bricked their refrigerators. Begs the question: Why does a refrigerator need anything more than a mechanical thermostat to set the temperature of the freezer and refrigerator and a mechanical switch to turn the light on and off? I hate this timeline so much... https://www.techspot.com/news/113978-samsung-confirms-faulty-update-bricked-smart-refrigerators-promises.html #AI #NoAI
