mastodon 4.6.9Hi! I am a member of the team that runs the new social web space at SocialBC.ca. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Posts here are instance and BC related. Mostly politics and some weather.
You can see my personal account at @chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca with much more varied content, I also run @alberniweather@mstdn.ca.

Good comments here from BC Premier Eby on the way that Carney is kowtowing to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and “rewarding bad behaviour" by doing pipeline and carbon emission deals just with Alberta while setting "national policy”.
As promised, I have implemented the suspension/block on mastodon.cloud. Folks on #SocialBC will not be able to interact with accounts on that server.
This was done due to ongoing issues with spam and un-moderated user additions from that un-regulated and defunct server.
The negative impact should be minimal as very few people followed accounts there or vice versa.

Congrats to Mayor @silas@socialbc.ca and the @TownofGibsons@socialbc.ca for their restoration of the Persephone! It was the little work boat on The Beachcombers.
Such a great show. I used to watch it all the time.
Pretty cool that BC Ferries contributed $25,000 to the restoration as well. But the amount of hours required to restore it would have been enormous!

TIL Nova Scotia makes wine!?
Miss California? nope.
”I think we're making some gorgeous, gorgeous wines here in Nova Scotia and so I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a Nova Scotia wine," said Reynolds, who used to work for the provincial wine association in the early 2000s.
“"I think some Ontario wines are fabulous and British Columbia wines, if you can get your hands on any of them, are gorgeous, so I don't think we're losing much by giving up California wines.””

It’s not broken, it has completely disappeared.
First job?
Impossible.
Saving for education? Better get a loan.
Rent an apartment, with 4 friends, or live with your parents.
Down payment? Only if you have parents with the means.
When an “old boy” thinks he can "SLAPP” a sexual harassment accusation made on a Facebook group... but then... FAFO bites.
"A B.C. mayor's lawsuit against a resident who claimed the mayor had sexually harassed a local resident has been dismissed by a B.C. Supreme Court judge who found sufficient evidence that the sexual harassment did in fact happen.”

"The Americans are setting conditions before negotiations begin," said one high-ranking individual familiar with the matter.
Three sources used the term "entry fee" to describe concessions the U.S. administration is seeking before formal trade talks begin.

only in Nanaimo at VIU can you count more than 10 tiny nearly identical bunnies in all of 10 minutes.
one new clutch of 5 perfectly black, tiny guys were munching grass in no more than a 10ft space just now. Multiple students were just standing quietly watching them like 🥹🥹🥹
this tiny fluffball was eating under the protection of a tree in the japanese garden this morning. there was a grey friend nearby.
truly a hard life for bunnies

Ever since I got my home router and put the Telus/ISP service on "bridge mode" I have been getting a constant merry-go-round of IP addresses that I think has been wrecking havoc with my home lab and wifi.
This morning I woke up to no internet connection because the IP had changed yet again to an entirely different subnet. Everything eventually came back on its own.
Currently on support-chat with Telus to try to get a Static IP. We'll see if I can convince them...
Great news for travellers to the Island, #PortAlberni, #Tofino #Ucluelet, and the West Coast!
#Tseshaht
#Hupacasath
and #Huuayaht :huuayaht: are partnering to build the first new hotel built in Port Alberni since the Best Western Barclay in 1980!
It'll be a Wyndham microtel similar to the one just north of Ladysmith with a small pool and waterslide. It will be located next to #BCHwy4 at Walmart.
I would prefer if they were on a smaller island, maybe Cortez or Texada.
Pay the existing residents to go on vacation for the next 45 days…
P.S. yesterday I was told about a hantavirus related anti-semitic facebook post from a person who I would have pre-COVID considered a good person.
The COVID Pandemic and Facebook have really really destroyed people's minds and brought out the worst in many. :(
Almost Victoria Day Long Weekend!
ie. the “unofficial" start of the summer travel season. So that means, BC Ferries news! 😂
This is a good article with good data.
The takeaway for me: there is a big old boat deficit at BC Ferries.
IMO
a) it *should* be fixed.
b) all new ferries should be 100% electric ready.
c) electric terminal infrastructure starting *now*.
d) time to look at fixed links where possible.

Ah darn. :(
Mr Garrett was a great color guy and a mediocre goalie. (said with a wink and a smile that he would very much appreciate and chuckle at. :+))
RIP Cheech, thanks for the memories!

There is a very cool seasonal work-from-home job for someone who loves their bicycle and getting other people excited to go biking and rolling in BC!

Missing Person. Clement. He is Indigenous. 5’5”. Black hair brown eyes.
"He was wearing a black ball cap, dark blue puffy vest, grey long sleeve shirt, blue jeans, black runners and wearing a black backpack and a lanyard with possibly an ID holder at the end.”
May have taken the ferry from Victoria to Vancouver or Nanaimo to Vancouver on Sunday or this week.
