We sell milk in 4 pint bottles, but also in 2L bottles, which is similar in size, but a little but smaller. I think we will become metric in most things in time. But distances, almost certainly we will retain miles and yards, because most people who drive understand these, and it would cause a whole lot of problems to change. I can see in 30 years time, we would be putting up signs in both, and slowly changing over.

I know people talk about it a lot - but we go on long drives occasionally (not often). And we usually arrive with a clean windscreen. Maybe a couple of bugs. But I remember when I was young, we would go on a similar drive and the windscreen would be covered in bugs. That is in my lifetime - in some 50 years, the number of bugs identified on the Windscreen Index has gone from 200 to 1 (estimates). It is a very clear visible sign of the devastation we have caused in our country*. I was thinking of that as I have just acquired some carnivorous plants - but they will only take a fraction of the insects cars used to.

There is a question - or rather three questions. They come out of the growth of AI. And I don't expect answers, I just think we should ask them.

  1. What is intelligence? How would we know if software is intelligent? Turing Test is (of course) obsolete. So how do we check it now?

  2. What is sentience? Again, how would we know if an AI (a real one) was sentient?

  3. What is a spiritual being - a soul, or whatever we call it? How would we know if a non-human sentient being has a soul?

It is inherent in the entire software infrastructure we have. This was a massive risk even before AI tools. The difference is that AI can really easily exploit this, much easier than humans can.

@neurovagrant@masto.deoan.org 💯 - I do watch Ambulance (in the UK), and see how hard the dispatchers work, how difficult understanding and interpreting the calls is. As you say, how they discern some of what it really going on, what is really needed. I have used AI in my work, and so often I have to correct it or clarify what I need. It only works when the user provides some of the intelligence. Using that in something like this - absolutely no.

@Siff@mstdn.social I do get that they can be easier to work with - I know when I go into London on the train for an evening, I can pay for my parking at the station while on the train. Not huge, but I get it. I do think you should be able to pay with a card at least, in person. Ideally with cash too - but given that so many are "$3.20 for an hour, 4.43 for two hours" I can see that having the right change might be a pain. What annoys me most if that I have 4 different parking apps on my phone. Because every single place seems to have a different app needed. So even when I have installed and set up one, next time, I will need another one.

#WritersCoffeeClub July 23: "How much erotic content can a work have without being considered erotica?"

Some of this is about intent. Is the intent of the work to be erotic, sexually exciting - really, do you want people to have a wank over it?

If so, probably erotic. If not, they your focus should not be on the erotic nature of the erotic moments - it should be on a story.

As a general rule, I think, the main purpose of your writing should be clear to you. For mine, it is to talk about circumcision, or powerful anti-beauty people, or philosophical exploration.

Watching a show about Ibiza. An interesting comment was made that, while they try to crack down on drugs, if they stopped them altogether, that would kill the tourism industry totally. So they do a little and don't have money for any more - it is accepted that they need this illegal activity to keep the islands entire economy. And somehow, it feels like this is the case across a lot of the western world - at least. That is the nature of capitalism. You cannot erase the corruption entirely, because that would destroy the economy. And that feels like a fatal flaw.

@aral@mastodon.ar.al We have to because we have to exist in a capitalist society. Which is the whole trick. I believe my employers currently are at least trying to do something positive (as well as earning money), but publishing academic works, helping to educate. But yes, they are capitalist. I have to earn to live. I have to feed the tumor to exist, and so help the tumor grow. I want to not have to, but I have no real means of doing otherwise. I think it is for people to do what they can to support the healthy tissue. But there is precious little of that left.

@adron@metalhead.club I have talked about it elsewhere, but if you leave a church community, finding another place to meet people, possible talk about important things, and grow together is incredibly difficult. There used to be working mens clubs. Pubs that were locals. Community resources. Pretty well all gone. And we have lost a lot by these no longer being available - as a society.

@davidnjoku@mastodon.world I think it is an interesting mindset - not that unusual, in various ways - who can hold "this person is a terrible person" and "they have done some good things, and say some things I agree with". Because hating Trump or Farage is the Right Thing, while actually wanting to agree with them and support the things they say and do is what people want to do. Because, at heart, they agree with their racist, fascist mindsets. But don't want to admit is.
