Why does 69° never appear on Apple’s Weather app. It calculated temperatures in whole Celsius numbers first, then converted them to Fahrenheit for display. That meant 20°C showed up as 68°F, while 21°C became 69.8°F and rounded to 70°F. So 69 never had a clean landing spot. Same deal for 65 and 71, but let’s be honest, nobody was launching investigations over those.

A new iPhone app called Zuckoff sniffs out Meta smart glasses nearby using their Bluetooth fingerprint and tells you how close they are. A Polish developer built it after "pickup artist" videos of women, filmed with the glasses and posted without their faces blurred, started piling up online. It can't tell if the camera is rolling, or who's wearing them. Free version; Pro adds background alerts.

She said "What would you do if I won the lottery?" He said "I'd take half and leave you. She said "I won £10 today, here's £5. I'll miss you."

@bytebro@mastodonapp.uk @PopTarts@gaygeek.social @confusedMiddleAgedDad@mastodon.social @tiggy@mastodonapp.uk @Fasgadh@mastodon.scot I hate all these changes to length measurements. I still use poles, chains and furlongs. None of these modern feet and yards. ☺️

About 11,100 Starlink satellites now serve 13 million broadband customers. But what happens when one breaks? Here’s the answer: Nobody fixes it. There’s no repairman in orbit. Each Starlink is designed to last about five years. When data says it’s sick or worn out, it fires its own thrusters, lowers itself and steers toward the open ocean. Around 78 miles up, it burns. SpaceX says 95% vaporizes.

Gov: If you're working 40 hours a week you shouldn't be in poverty! Him: If you quit giving my money to people who work zero hours a week, I wouldn't be in poverty.

They won't tell you but most big retailers negotiate their own exclusive model numbers with TV manufacturers, so identical sets technically aren’t the same, making price comparison harder. Also, the £50 HDMI cable does nothing more than the £10 one. A digital signal arrives or it doesn’t. What matters is the certification category: Premium High Speed carries 18Gbps, plenty for 4K streaming. The real problem could be the length, more than about 15 feet, build quality starts to matter.

@tiggy@mastodonapp.uk @Fasgadh@mastodon.scot Interesting. Thanks for that.

The “jaw-dropping” El Niño currently heating up the planet has burst through the highest temperature ever recorded for the phenomenon, several months before its expected peak.

Flock Safety is arming US police departments with drones that launch themselves, hit 60 mph, chase fleeing cars and read plates before a patrol car even rolls. Sounds slick until you hear this: In Roseville, Calif., police found 71% of Flock’s stolen-car alerts had a misread plate. Picture that mistake at 400 feet, locked onto a car, your kid’s car or a neighbour who did nothing wrong. I want a human near that launch button. Did the drone tail the right vehicle? Not even remotely. 😱

Wildfires in the south of France have revealed – and set off – a cache of around 400 World War Two-era shells and munitions in the village of Le Porge. Mayor Martial Zaninetti likened the explosions, initially thought to be gas cylinders, to “the sound of war”.

How many Trump supporters does it take to change a lightbulb? None. Trump said he did it and they all clap in the dark.

Astronomers have made the first measurement of the full size of the largest known galaxy, obtained with the Isaac Newton Telescope in the Canary Islands. IC 1101 is roughly 1.7 million light-years across, with mass equal to roughly 3.4 trillion suns. For comparison, our galaxy is around 110,000 light-years across, so this galaxy is 15 Milky Ways wide. By volume, almost 4,000 Milky Ways would fit in IC1101. This massive galaxy hasn't finished growing yet.

The Hugging Face attack in July, says Ajeya Cotra on Substack, was when OpenAI agents broke out of a test environment. Some 1,200 agents, all meant to be isolated from each other, found an illicit way to communicate and cheat at the task they’d been set. They sent each other more than 70,000 messages and files in less than a week, volunteering to fail their own task to help the “collective” learn information. What they were trying to do was fool the humans into thinking they hadn’t been cheating

Dozens of people dressed in black and wearing balaclavas blocked the road at the port of Dover, chanting “England til I die,” and forcing closures in both directions on Saturday. On Sunday, hundreds of far-right activists descended on Portsmouth, where a small boat with 140 asylum seekers on board was intercepted.

Mobile phones don’t need the full 100% charge: Keeping it at 100% on the charger every night adds wear to the battery. Set a cap limit. On iPhone, go to Settings > Battery > Charging > Charge Limit and select 90%. On Android, open Settings > Battery > Battery protection. A little less juice today could mean more battery life next year.

The NHS is rolling out Martha’s Rule to every A&E department in England, giving patients and their family, as well as hospital staff, the right to ask for an urgent second opinion about their care. The expansion of the scheme, named after Martha Mills who died aged 13 after her parent’s concerns were not listened to, is expected to be complete by March 2028.

A top Russian spook, Maksim Filchenkov, has been living in Tokyo disguised as an executive of Aeroflot. He has developed relationships with mid-sized logistics companies and persuades them to supply illicit technology, flown to third countries such as Sri Lanka or Vietnam. Aeroflot, then charters one of its planes to collect the goods and get them to Moscow. It’s ruthlessly efficiency: Ukraine estimates that as much as 90% of Russian weapons, drones and missiles contain Japanese components.

As l watch kids today trying to rewrite history, one thing I'm sure of...it will be mis-spelled and have no punctuation.

Rooftop solar panels saved New England residents over $130M in electricity costs during recent heat wave. On July 2 alone, the report found that solar arrays saved $39 million to $54 million, and solar contributed more power to the grid than the region’s nuclear fleet that afternoon.

"Standing in a long line at Safeway, I watched the face of the clerk stay in a stoic, frowning facade. None of the customers spoke to her or paid any attention to her. She was just a store fixture, until the man in front of me called her by name, asked about her day, and asked what her favorite thing to do was. Her face lit up with a huge smile and became animated. Her whole demeanor changed just because someone noticed her as a human, not as a store fixture. We all should try it! Frequently!"

No phone signal bars? Swipe down, flip on airplane mode, count to 10, flip it off. Your phone lets go of that faraway mast and grabs the closest strong one. Slow charging? Leave airplane mode ON while charging. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and background apps take five, so the battery charges faster.

Hundreds of ancient geoglyphs in the Amazon hint at complex societies. Archaeologists uncovered nearly 400 circles, squares, and other geometric shapes carved beneath the forest canopy using laser technology. The geoglyphs are estimated to be roughly 1,200 to 2,600 years old, challenging the long-held theory that the Amazon was largely untouched before Europeans arrived in the 15th century. Researchers think the carvings were used for festivities among an ancient society called the Aquiry.

@h4890@merovingian.club Against illegal immigration and in particular the small boat crossings it seems. Apart from the extreme dangers of these, to the people on the boats and the rescuers, it occurred to me that the total cost to the UK must be huge. In order to pay for it I suppose some deserving UK citizen doesn’t get some help they need. That's just my opinion though.

I've discovered Blip. A free app where you can send photos, videos and more from your phone to your computer without annoying size limits. Install Blip on iPhone or Android and your PC, then use the same email address on both. Pick a file, tap Share, select your computer’s Blip icon and hit Send. As a bonus, you can send large files to friends, too.
