@Fasgadh@mastodon.scot @kibcol1049@mstdn.social Apart from it being a recent thing in the UK, the USA still uses F. They also still use pounds and ounces. and pints and gallons. But be careful with USA recipes because their pounds and pints, and even their spoons and cup measures, are smaller than the imperial measures that were used in the UK. You can still buy cup and spoon measuring kits in the UK but they are the UK sizes not USA.

@Fasgadh@mastodon.scot @kibcol1049@mstdn.social Our tablespoons and teaspoons in the UK used to be a standard size so those were used in measuring for baking. They stopped being a standard some years ago as companies saved money by shrinking them. So now you have to pay for measuring spoons. Most cups used for baking/cooking were also a similar size. So a recipe might want 2 cups of flour or 2 tablespoons of spice. Most USA baking recipes are still using cups and spoon measures instead of weight, but the smaller sizes not UK/imperial.

#WordWeavers Sep 26 Authors talk about how smart their MCs or villains are, but have you ever written a slow-witted character? A dangerous topic, too easy to step over the line over #Disability and #Neurodiverse terminology. My characters have a range of qualities, interests and abilities.

Eggs are still sold in 6s or 12s. Fabric was sold by length in metres but width in inches for a while but is now fully metric. Meanwhile many children don't know what clockwise means because they only use digital clocks. I think one reason younger people have more problems with arithmetic isn't just they can do it all online but also that as young children we had to be able to use £sd, weird weight measures, use analogue clocks, etc.

Just what we don't need, another climate destroying data centre to take more water and use so much energy that they use it as a reason to use more fossil fuels Plus more land turned to concrete. Microsoft is planning to build huge AI data centres in Leeds that will drain the River Aire and massively increase carbon emissions. Today is the monthly Death Cafe. I am feeling extremely unenthusiastic. No one at the last one and no response from the couple of people who were coming sometimes before. But it is a commitment I made so off I'll go. I'd hoped to at least have that document back for a final edit so I could do that. But having promised to send it Thursday I didn't get it. #Fedup

#ScribesAndMakers 3 July: We have some new people in the community. Re/Introduce yourself and tell us about your creative work.

I'm Tricia. I used to publish non fiction, since retiring I mainly write short fiction stories and poetry.
Cross genre and eclectic.

Amazon helpfully adds books by two other authors onto my profile, one writes porn and the other about Christianity.
And also deletes some of my actual books.
At least once a year I tell them to correct it but it always comes back ... I can't even blame AI as they've done it for over 15 years.

#ScribesAndMakers June 10. (Excluding time travel) Do you have a preference between books that progress linearly and books that jump back and forth in time (flashbacks etc)?

I often find this difficult when listening to audiobooks and the date is a rushed bit of information in the chapter title. It wasn't an issue with hard copy as I could flick back if I missed it, but now I mainly use audio I avoid books that jump around in time.

The UK has been criticised several times over the political narrative and cuts in support. But every government since Blair has reduced our support. In defiance of the facts they and most of the media spread lies. This is the result. Beating up disabled people because we are "scroungers" who have a better life than others. Over the last 15 years I have paid £thousands for my mobility aids. My last one was written off after an attack. But I don't want sympathy, I want justice and truth. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/sep/07/disabled-person-school-discrimination-benefits #Disability

The fruit firm made APC redeliver the box - and only just starting to thaw so it's fine.

Half plus of the 3kg of gooseberries and half of the 2kg of damsons in the freezer.

Two large bowls in the fridge.
And the rest is going into keto pie crusts we have ready plus no added sugar jam.

@PetraPhoenix@beige.party The Adaptive Clothing marketing the UK is expanding rapidly. Search on that term and you'll find lots of new small designers/shops. Some might even design these if they don't already. It is beginning to go mainstream, eg Primark and M&S, but their ranges are very limited. BTW my disability charity can provide grants for people in South Yorkshire who need to pay for adaptations to study fashion design. (That's via existing education institutions in SY.)

#ScribesAndMakers 8 Jul: How many spaces do you like after a period/full stop?

One if using a bit of IT kit.

Handwriting? No idea. My handwriting was bad even before. Partly dyslexia and partly a primary school headteacher who, like Gove, insisted on his own style. I'd already been taught 'joined up' writing at a different school but in his empire I was too young.
When we were permitted to write 'joined up', we had to use the weird capital Ts I'd never seen except in old manuscripts.
I hate writing in caps but sometimes it is the only way people can read my handwriting.

Back from my first external meeting this week.
The dodgy dropped kerbs plus gnarly* pavements meant it took me 2.5 times as long to go on my powerchair as someone walking average speed.

I think my record for having to get up and push over the dangerous bits is six times in less than half a mile.

* Google etc would have you believe this is USA surfer slang. It is much older and English not USA.
Think gnarled ...

@ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk It is astounding they would even try. For years we sat in EU meetings where the countries who were not part of the EU but needed to apply EU law attended just to listen. I don't remember any of them demanding a vote. I wonder if this is just performance and not a real attempt, because they are afraid of losing votes if they admit the truth about our position? We need the EU but they are too afraid of losing to the far right. If the government hadn't chosen to blame the EU for things we controlled or we wanted over decades we wouldn't be here. A lesson they need to learn.

I'm having a fibro flare. Worse than usual because I spent too much time pushing through when more caffeine and a short rest let me recharge just a bit.
Eventually that stops working and this week is the week.

I squeezed in one last meeting with my brain at half efficiency yesterday morning. That was the final straw.
I've been losing words and losing my balance for days - the bruises are spectacular.

Now I can hardly get out of bed.
Luckily home help prepped salad and made scones.

I had to reload a spell checker to post anything readable.

I've had follow up appointments booked either one week or two weeks ahead. Their announcement isn't clear if these are covered.

(I've also been waiting over 4 years for a follow up that was supposed to be "in four months".)

I wish I'd got their details. Relay door cold callers told me they could put in fibre to my home very cheaply, after telling me I must still be on broadband. No, I'm on fibre. All but two houses here are already have fibre even if they aren't using it. The two who aren't are the other neighbours who didn't get it when the original installers decided not to dig up to the three of us on the top path. (Some of you will remember the months long saga of getting it up to my home.) Well we can offer you a cheaper deal, how much are you paying. Nothing. Because Openreach took so long to put in the fibre to my house (and yes, that work is free), I have over 10 months free as compensation. So many lies ... the only company who puts in fibre up to you home here is Openreach, and we dont pay for that.
