Imperfect ally, but I'm trying my best. This is an LGBTQ+ safe space. Posts auto-delete after 90 days.

Proud resident the Twin Cities. Liberal Christian. Partner to a kick-ass woman who is smarter than me and has the PhD to prove it.

For money, I am a writer of all things #IaC as a #DevOps engineer, although I'm currently between jobs. #getFediHired

For my sanity, I'm also a fan of:

#dadjokes
#puns
#LEGO
#cycling
#pf2e
#boardgames
#urbanism and urban planning in general

I boost all corgis (then share them with my partner), the odd assortment of tech humor and terrible puns, posts from folks seeking employment, things relevant to MN or US current events (being careful to avoid a large degree of negativity), and the rare political hot take. I hope to provide a place where everyone can feel welcome, be comfortable being themselves, and smile after leaving.

Job hunt grousing

Dear employers everywhere. The following list is not fully remote:

  • Remote, but you must live within commuting distance of $office_location
  • Remote unless you live in $metro_area, in which case you must be in office $x days per week
  • Remote in $list_of_states
  • Remote, but we can demand you move to our office location without warning and you have to do so within six months. $Company does not offer relocation assistance. [Editor's note, yes, I saw a company with the audacity to post this for the world to see.]

Personally, I'd like to see a new classification of remote-based roles, something like Conditional Remote, that I can just ignore. Requiring in-office time in any way (aside from occasional all-hands or similar) speaks volumes about what you actually think about your employees.

@rk@mastodon.well.com @hacks4pancakes@infosec.exchange It's the perfect storm, isn't it? Garbage candidates applying for jobs that they're not qualified for with resumes that aren't real, wasting companies' time and putting them off hiring, while the actual folks that know the job are getting shoved to the bottom of the stack because our resumes can't pass the AI filter before a human ever looks at it. Gotta love a system that both parties hate.

@wendythedruid@thistlenfern.org No, I've always found CF to be really inflexible and difficult to deal with as well. One major project we were trying to work through at my previous place was lots of tech debt paydown, part of which involved migrating a generation of CF-managed infrastructure to TF. Incidentally, it's a quite involved process to get CF to release management of infrastructure without destroying the resource involved. I will neither confirm nor deny that we triggered some PagerDuty alerts in that process. 😅

RE: @NotYourSysadmin@infosec.exchange

Well folks, as of Friday, I'll be unemployed. To be clear, this is by choice not by force. The toxicity of my current workplace made it more tenable to risk unemployment than to continue in such an environment.

That said, I am actively looking for a new role. During my downtime, I am going to start playing around with this #kubernetes thing that I think might catch on. I'll also be working towards catching myself up with the industry in general, and taking a bit of time to work on myself. If you're in need of a senior #devOps or #sysadmin type person, or someone who can step into a low-level #EngineeringManager role, please reach out. I'm happy to provide my resume or contact information on request.

I try not to be annoying with my job posting boosts, but, IMO, the job market isn't a zero sum game. Even if I'm in direct competition for a position with someone, they deserve just as much of a chance of getting the job as I do. Until we as a society decide that our value as humans isn't determined by whether or not we can work and implement UBI/GMI, employment will unfortunately continue to effectively be necessary.

@inthehands Is there a preferred voting strategy that helps you folks plan better? I basically voted for every talk that met or surpassed a standard of "Huh, that's neat, I'd see that if there was nothing better at that time." I wound up with 40 total votes, which in hindsight is a bit high for 8 session blocks. I guess I'm just trying to get a sense of whether I fall in the "useful data" or the "just clicked on everything" bucket?

@raindrops_and_roses@mastodon.social If you're their supervisor, it's time to bring in your boss and/or HR. This is an authority issue, in that they're not respecting yours as team lead, and there's usually no recovering from that. If you're just a peer of theirs, then it's time to talk to your mutual supervisor. I'd frame it in a context of "I'm trying to work with $PERSON on $PROJECT, and they're being unresponsive to questions. It has delayed the project by X weeks so far. How do you want me to handle it moving forward?" Bear in mind, this is advice for a reasonable company in the US. Your locality's laws or legal and cultural differences might make this approach unwise, so above all, make the decision that keeps you the safest.

@nuintari@mastodon.bsd.cafe I don't disagree with you that registering companies and dealing with tax stuff is incredibly challenging and complex. That's probably the most "acceptable" reason to not offer fully remote for every state, so perhaps my original post might have been a bit too harsh. My previous employer didn't originally have a tax setup in Minnesota when I moved up here, but I was quite privileged enough to be valued by my boss that, when I told him, he basically went straight to the top and said "We're adding Minnesota to the list. This isn't a discussion or a maybe or a potentially." Granted, this was in 2022 before all of the layoffs and GenAI stuff started. He couldn't get away with that now, even if he still worked there. But I still think it deserves a separate categorization if anyone from any state can't apply to the role and work 5 days a week from their home office. Remote, IMO, should mean exactly that.

@raganwald@social.bau-ha.us I think it's very important for us to take lessons from the manufacturing industry here. In the US at least, it's incredibly difficult to make anything domestically. Complicating things further, a Smarter Every Day video from several months ago found that, not only have we lost the ability to make things, we've lost the ability to make the things that make things. In his case, he found that finding folks who knew how to make the molds and metal stamping components was difficult to impossible to find domestically. And we're gladly walking into the same trap with knowledge work. It isn't enough that we're outsourcing software development itself. We're outsourcing the ability to make new software engineers. (And, being an Ops person, I'd argue that we're doing that with all knowledge-based roles in general.)

I appreciate and respect companies that give back to open source projects, whether financially or through direct code contributions. Having an expectation that every potential engineering employee already does this in their spare time is a major red flag. Doubly so for roles that aren't software engineering-focused.

It's weird seeing the places that are hiring for hybrid roles thinking it drives down the salary because they only have to compete in the local market. Most studies I've seen indicate that in-office time comes with a premium price tag, driving salaries up. Very interesting dynamic.
