@kajer@infosec.exchange @Perrin42@mastodon.social @Viss@mastodon.social @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @NatePick@fosstodon.org Should really include nerd trigger warning for those types of posts 🙃 My homelab buildup started last year, RAM apoc hit before started upgrading most of my machines 🙁

@kajer@infosec.exchange Current era is strange, made it to penultimate round w place I'd like to work, learned last in person interview even though only one position they posted it for at least 3 cities. So they had a lot of applicanta & IDK how many interviews. Another position I applied for, not ideal but did that work out of college, & they had reposted opening. That one no interaction just rejection email, but they are reposting once or twice month only thing can figure w that is they expect turnover.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org is it me or does it look like frame damage? Like is U shaped slightly?

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org your probably aware, buy Boundary Waters is seldom closed and normally no motorized but they've closed it and are trying to evacuate people because wildfires https://hachyderm.io/@rationaldoge/116929501269264652

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange @Viss@mastodon.social @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I checked it isn't April 1 https://mastodon.world/@davidho/116983357242374223

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I never had occasion to fix 8 track, my dad as Over the Road truck driver had one, he made up a kludge box to hold CB and 8 track, with antennae bracket welded to vise grips that he would clamp to mirror bracket (he normally had different semi for each run). But it never gave him problems.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange "received digital confirmation of data destruction" umm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTRKCXC0JFg

@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it @nikitonsky@mastodon.online "It can profitably be used to produce Soylent Green"

@chrisp@cyberplace.social @Scorpion8741@infosec.exchange @evacide@hachyderm.io You can't stop cell phone from connecting to cell network, there is the entire base band https://security.googleblog.com/2024/10/pixel-proactive-security-cellular-modems.html

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @MLE_online@social.afront.org @plutarch@gotosocial.plutar.ch @morgan@sfba.social I keep looking at ebikes from narrow niche. I have chronic pain issues and asthma like breathing issues, ideally I'd prefer manual bike, but with my health issue would be easy to get myself in position where just need AC or such and ebike reserve option would mean it was self manageable issue vs needing assistance.

@AAKL@infosec.exchange @elpais_america@mas.to @mttaggart@infosec.exchange I am a little puzzled, IME LLM don't handle nuance or detail well at all. So the suggestion that the LLM was giving perfect scores to the test seem doubtful unless prof used same LLM to make the test as the students did to answer it. Even then find it hard to believe it would help much.

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon@mastodon.social yearly under time pressure and live video stream

@mycrowgirl@flipping.rocks @skyfaller@jawns.club @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org That reminds me of trick I learned from someone long time ago, pencil sharpener to use with twigs for tinder. Keep one in my small emergency car bag. Something easy to use and can have it places can't have multi tool or pocket Knife

@mycrowgirl@flipping.rocks @skyfaller@jawns.club @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org do they hold enough liquid to be usable for small alcohol burner? Not enough for like for serious hiking, but for small kit one could carry on foot? Just thinking they are far more durable and leak proof than most containers

@danirabbit@mastodon.online Darkweb? I'm guessing that age BS will push more in that direction.

@blakefox@mastodon.social @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org The limited versions are bit higher quality IME, and have metal clips. Also entire reddits and communities that put the G2 refills into other pens.

@Archergal@wandering.shop @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I just meant to endorse your endorsement, just don't have personal experience with them.

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I'd give you a G2 to try if we lived closer, I end up with extras because it is often lot cheaper to get a multi pack of color regular ones from walmart than get refills.

@ludicity@mastodon.sprawl.club @dashdsrdash@tilde.zone @huronbikes@cyberplace.social I recall what one of my best managers ever told me about hiring, said no one is actually like how they act in interview. W current online application process think it is only worse, vast majority of jobs the skillset for getting through robot application process has nothing to do with actual job. Though I've only hired couple dozen people.

@alister@hachyderm.io @malwaretech@infosec.exchange @jerry@infosec.exchange Recursive Firewalls, pro move.

@johnofrobotz@mastodon.girolab.foo @mttaggart@infosec.exchange All my good science teachers were a lot better at teaching math, at least for me than math teachers. College I went to for BA, one math prof and one psychology prof both taught statistics. The psych prof was lot better, one year group of students even collected data comparing the two classes, and psych stats class had better performance.

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social guess I have never been high enough level manager to think that way, I always wanted to reward my really productive employees. Seems like the logical thing to do to me.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social have mini and micro USB cables willing to trade for DP to DP or mDP to DP 🙃

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @MLE_online@social.afront.org @plutarch@gotosocial.plutar.ch @morgan@sfba.social is front wheel drive practical at all for those?

@azonenberg@ioc.exchange @Drwave@mastodon.social "the argument that religion is essential to morality" IMHO many logical flaws with that argument. The appeal to authority to start, closely followed by what religion(s) are moral. Also takes as an axiom that religion(s) is moral, which based on the evidence is hard argument to make IMO for the vast majority of dominant religions, at least if you know anything about history or current events.

@whbboyd@infosec.exchange @whitequark@social.treehouse.systems just FYI steam engines still used everyday, how nuke reactors produce electricity, also how gas and coal plants produce electricity IIRC. Also some marine engines https://www.triveniturbines.com/blog/the-role-of-steam-turbines-in-modern-marine-propulsion-systems/

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I prefer the limited versions, more comfortable but I have fibromyalgia, the regular ones are okay. The little flex grip part on limited might deteriorate around a decade or so on some. They take same refills https://www.amazon.com/pilot-g2-limited-edition/s?k=pilot+g2+limited+edition

@Strandjunker@mstdn.social I remember during first couple years of COVID totally revising my evaluation that most zombie apocalypse shows were unrealistic in the poor government responses. Never though all those countries would be out thought by brainless zombies.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social I dislike it as well, on many levels, but there are several tipping points this year (2026) IMHO that can't be hand waved off. Think of both the rise in bug submission reports, and record number of patches for Windows etc also how it has sped up discovery to exploit window for black hats https://krebsonsecurity.com/2026/07/microsoft-patches-a-record-570-security-flaws/

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org I edc except when dress code forces hard pocket choices Rite in Rain notpad, that mechanical pencil, a pen, and minibic in something like this https://www.amazon.com/Rite-Rain-All-Weather-Notebook-C935/dp/B007QUKU1Q/135-3642213-5583546

@theothersimo@mastodon.social @Strandjunker@mstdn.social umm consider the way COVID was handled world wide I really have doubts.

@mttaggart@infosec.exchange I blame it on the teachers then. I only ever had one good math teacher that was in math department. Only had him his last year teaching before he retired. Good resource that didn't exist when I was a kid, discovered when I studied calculus on my own about a decade ago https://www.youtube.com/@MathTV/videos

@washbear@mastodon.sdf.org @guenther@chaos.social So old macs work with BSD? Been trying to think of really cheap BSD box for homelab

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @kajer@infosec.exchange @librewolf@chaos.social haven't dug into these details yet, but if at home can't you use router/firewall to block at least some of that? Or does that cause other issues?

@SmudgeTheInsultCat@mas.to well to be technical, they didn't say blowing the seeds off 🤷

@nixCraft@mastodon.social surprised no lawyers have weighted in, as written wouldn't this also be an attempt to claim ownership for work done for previous employers?

@nixCraft@mastodon.social Therapy?

@ahltorp@mastodon.nu @grumble209@kolektiva.social @deepfryed@fosstodon.org @briankrebs@infosec.exchange @jtk@infosec.exchange My partner works for a small school district, and I know budget constraints are real problem for their software choices. I've looked into FOSS alternatives but their IT person really isn't up to handling those options for them so that isn't workable option ether.

@pixelpusher220@dmv.community Heh, though since I got one of these it has solved any such problems I could use it for, built in extension/cheater pipe, and the convincing review was from guy that used it on oil rig w cheater pipe and more than one person https://ezred.com/product/34-inch-drive-extendable-ratchet-2/

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org My fav pocket Mechanical pencil though don't recall if mine is the .5 or .7 https://www.amazon.com/Pentel-Mechanical-Pencil-Kerry-P1035-CD/dp/B0013NHUAQ

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @oheso@ieji.de though to be fair do any of us expect not to be sagging a little at that age?

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @kajer@infosec.exchange @librewolf@chaos.social Well after get job situation fixed, planning on getting into pointless nerd levels of home networking for reasons. Like separate VM for WAN and each LAN segment w FOSS router/firewall IDS/IPS Pi Hole etc. Also have Amazon Fire Cube got free that plan to use to test/monitor for that type of phoning home activity.

@Archergal@wandering.shop @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org yeah last time I researched it seriously jetpens was the top recommended site, I just tend to get via Walmart on Sale locally, or Amazon when I have to, I need couple of colors for color coding and local isn't always practical for that.

@BRMiller@hcommons.social @stevewfolds@mastodon.world @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @jbaggs@infosec.exchange yeah our local library is getting funding cut, ironic considering it is probably leanest operating gov funded dept/agency in the town and county.

@stux@mstdn.social "was a clear indication of scam back in the days"...pretty sure it is still clear indicator of a scam

@bob_zim@infosec.exchange @mttaggart@infosec.exchange well at the time I already understood computer programing & electronic type logic. And knew enough about navigation to know something about non euclidean geometry like straight line not being shortest path flying or ships. That math teacher just wasn't prepared or capable of explaining that axioms were just taken as true as a starting point not really "true" or "proven", just mere assumptions.
