“AI almost starts WWIII”. No it did not. The people stupid enough to think that LLMs can be used as a reliable source of information did that. That’s like reporting “Tarot cards almost start WWIII”. Completely irresponsible framing.
If you’re a man wondering what you can do about the Cornell 7 situation: cut off that guy you know who has committed assault. That’s literally it. Tell him to his face, “I can’t be friends with people who act like this”.
Building the same thing as a closed source product, but making the source available, is not a noble pursuit in itself. The point of free software is that it liberates and democratizes. If you’ve forgotten that, what you’re building doesn’t really matter.
Today in late-stage capitalism I went to book an appointment to get my brows waxed and the app informed me I can pay for my haircut or dye over time with Affirm. That’s where we’re at with wages rn is you can take a loan to get a haircut

We need diversity in our communities not just at the bottom level but in leadership to represent and advocate for our interests. White men are naturally incentivized to be all “I care about the technology, let’s not get political” because the status quo benefits them and the externalities disproportionately hurt us.

Lots of people around me are doing heroine these days. To truly evaluate whether heroine is the right choice for me, I decided I needed to also start doing heroine. And after months of heroine use, I too am unable to stop doing heroine. Sure it comes with trade offs but it’s a truly useful and powerful tool

I’ve had so many conversations now with long-time very serious open source contributors and advocates from a bunch of different projects that all are basically versions of, “Are we still doing something worth doing? Have we become evil corporate drones but just poor and tired? Am I alone in caring about this?”
Lock screen is now using Gala instead of its own compositor—essential work for the new input method support and on screen keyboard. Plus it’s all Wayland. And we’re about to land the GTK4 port!
Next big steps are fixing systemd session files for installer and making it use gala as well. And then I think we might have an installable daily 🎉
Went to a queer women’s event yesterday hosted by a friend who is a sex educator and we had a bunch of awesome discussions about disability! One story I found particularly interesting was about a blind person who was unable to access audio erotica because of the inaccessibility of apps and websites providing this kind of content. She introduced me to the term “arousal aid”—we love terms that erase stigma. And we talked about how to make her own website more accessible

I literally cannot conceive of a thing that isn’t about politics in our current society. My breakfast is about politics. The weather is about politics. When I buy groceries that’s politics. My job is a political act. When I spend time with friends later today that act will also be political. And not because we’ll be protesting but because existing as queer brown women in public is a political act. The fact that so many of my friends are disabled or neurodivergent or sex workers is political

This year more than most, I’ve really been reflecting on my own disability. It really hit me when I filled out a form recently and checked three of the boxes under disability: PTSD, Major Depression, and Generalized Anxiety. And I’ve had to come to a place of acceptance with being unable to work consistently and even being hospitalized at one point. It’s hard to admit that I can’t function sometimes. One of the affirmations that’s remained on my chalkboard is, “You are disabled, not broken”.

Anybody I know have experience with OpenCollective? I’m interested in trying to move elementary to a more community/nonprofit legal structure but I’m trying to wrap my head around how expenses work. Like how do I actually pay out digital ocean? Does some individual need to pay first and get reimbursed? There’s no direct way to pay expenses?

@martin_t@mastodon.social i was thinking of safety more in terms of from predatory adults. In terms of content I wish that our society was focused a lot more on violent content. I’m not a child psychologist but I think being exposed to extreme violence and death is probably not good for anyone to see let alone a child. Being exposed to sexuality as a teen seems vaguely developmentally appropriate. I remember reading gay smut with my friends in class lol

But Steyer and Becerra are both polling ahead of Chad Bianca. So honestly I think I’m voting for Steyer. Becerra is pro oil drilling, it’s insane. I see him a regressive candidate. I’d rather take my chances with the guy that at least claims to have a progressive platform

@manu hey so I grew up around drug addiction and specifically heroin addiction. I lived with someone addicted to heroin as a kid and they were absolutely destroying their life while on the surface they were getting compliments about their weight loss.
