We need to be less hysterical about potential AMOC collapse in 2100 and way more hysterical about the actual mega El Niño in 2027.

When climate scientists say things are going to be horrendous, people find out many years later that we’re right. With this El Niño, the “find out” part will come in months.

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science:
For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

Every time I return to Paris, I notice they've done more to reclaim streets from drivers and cars, including removing on-street parking, protecting cyclists from drivers, and prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists in shared spaces. Other cities can learn a lot from Paris.

CRANE, a UK cybersecurity research network, used AI to desk-reject 50% of proposals before human review, including one on the risks of trusting AI models in voice analysis from Lancaster University forensic linguist Claire Hardaker.
This seems like AI doing the right thing in protecting itself. 🙃
This is a joke. It’s horrifying.

IMHO, attribution science, which connects specific extreme weather events to climate change, is the most important area of climate science.

Here’s another way climate change will kill us: the expansion of mosquitoes and the deadly diseases they carry.
In Paris, the invasive Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), an aggressive, day-biting nuisance, is now everywhere. So excited to get Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika in Paris.

The ocean absorbed a record-breaking 23 zettajoules of heat last year, equivalent to 40 times the energy used by humanity.
It’s not going to end well.

Summers in the US are getting hotter. 2026 will be the hottest and most humid in the contiguous US since records began in 1895. This is a result of human-caused climate change. We need investments in clean energy, updates to permitting systems, and help for communities to adapt to climate hazards.

Climeworks said its Mammoth facility in Iceland removed 675 tonnes of CO₂ in the first half of this year, almost 6x as much as a year earlier. If they keep it up, that'll be 1350 tonnes a year.
That's a time machine that takes us back 1 second in a year! 🙄
Mammoth has a stated capacity of 36,000 tonnes. 🫠

Microsoft significantly reduced its carbon removal purchases by 80% in the first half of 2026. Microsoft bought 93% of all the carbon removal credits globally last year. This is absurd, and no way to determine which method might actually work and scale. Carbon dioxide removal research and development should be government-funded and government-led.
