Come and work at UNSW in Sydney, Australia! We have a 2-year Research Associate position for a groundwater recharge modeller to join the Laureate Fellowship project ‘Caves and their stalagmites: linking climate to groundwater recharge’. The successful applicant will develop their research expertise through their contribution to a work package led by myself and Andreas Hartmann (TU Dresden) that will use groundwater recharge model simulations to investigate the climate processes that lead to relationships between climate and environmental change and groundwater recharge. The work involves integrating fire events into a global karst recharge model, investigating effects of wildfire on recharge volumes for the Black Summer fires, the last 100 yrs; and for future climates and environment change. For further details, please see: https://external-careers.jobs.unsw.edu.au/cw/en/job/543339/research-associate #academia #groundwater #UNSW ##academicjobs #research

"The #NIH has made possible cure after cure for generations, and without it, I might not be alive today. That's why recent news of a potential deal to transfer hundreds of millions of dollars from the NIH to the Department of Defense -- an agency that already has a budget 20 times that of the NIH -- is so chilling. This comes on top of nearly 2 years of NIH funding cuts and workforce reductions, along with repeated attempts to politicize grant determinations. From 2025 to 2026, the NIH reduced the number of new #research grants it funded by almost 25%." https://www.medpagetoday.com/opinion/second-opinions/123130 #science #cancer

A POLITICO investigation reveals more than 100 open records requests demanding documents from climate scientists nationwide. Conservative organizations are filing open records requests by the dozens..demanding emails, research drafts, correspondence with law firms and other documents from academics studying #climatechange Targets and their allies say it’s all an effort to undermine the role climate #research is playing in litigation against U.S. #fossilfuel companies https://www.politico.com/news/2026/09/28/climate-science-conservative-documents-universities-01065669

Today we travel back to 1972 and run MYCIN, one of the first expert systems, on the Pentium 1. MYCIN was developed at Stanford University in the early 1970s to diagnose bacterial infections and recommend antibiotics. In 1979, it achieved a 90.9% agreement rate with Stanford experts. The system was built around roughly 450 production rules, each representing clinical decision criteria from infectious disease experts. So I got the code, installed CLISP on the Pentium 1 and started the consultation. There was one small compatibility issue: Peter Norvig's implementation uses two functions not defined in modern CLISP, requires and rest2. A short shim file fixed that and the inference engine came to life. The version available today is only a fragment of the original MYCIN. The implementation from Peter Norvig's book "Paradigms of AI Programming" contains the inference engine and just 6 rules for identifying organisms. The remaining rules for therapy, dosage and patient-specific recommendations are gone. The original MYCIN was written in Interlisp for a DEC PDP-10 running WAITS. It was never released as open source. What survives today is essentially the shell of the system, not the knowledge it contained. MYCIN is a monument to AI history. The way its source code was handled is both a memorial and a warning. ELIZA (1966) survived because Weizenbaum published the code. CLIPS (1985) survived because NASA released it as open source. MYCIN (1972) did not. Publicly funded research. Publicly funded code. Never released to the public. This is why publicly funded research should be open source. Always! #MYCIN #AIHistory #ExpertSystems #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #Stanford #Lisp #CLISP #NetBSD #Pentium1 #Pentium #Pentium166 #RetroComputing #vintagecomputing #OpenSource #FOSS #OpenScience #PubliclyFundedResearch #ComputerHistory #Science #Research #AcademicChatter

@nemorosa@mastodon.nu I definitely couldn’t. When I started research on a book about 1916 I spent hours getting my grandparents’ and a couple of others’ birth, marriage and death certificates. With the internet (and Irish government generosity) I now have thousands. If I were in other countries not so, though - they monetise these records #research #internet

ALRIGHT! I'm VERY excited to announce this research, because we've been holding onto it for close to a year now! Announcing File Notification Attacks! Side-Channel Leakage from the File-Notification System on #Linux, #Android, #Windows, and #macOS We've found decades-old bugs on Linux, Android, and Windows... well technically Microsoft considers what we found an ✨ undocumented feature ✨ (got Microsoft nominated for the lamest vendor response #pwnie award haha). There's SO much to talk about, so please expand this thread below, but you can also check it out yourself at: https://inoti.fyi/ There's a #noAI logo that my sister drew there. Our work was accepted at #CCS 2026, and I'll be presenting it this November at The Hague, Netherlands! If you're there, we should totally meet up :D Thanks to my AWESOME co-authors: Xufan Zhao, Jeanette Angelika Wultsch, @hweissi@infosec.exchange, Florian Draschbacher, @notbobbytables@infosec.exchange, and @lavados@infosec.exchange 🙏, all of us from @isec_tugraz@infosec.exchange, TU Graz #security #cybersecurity #research #systems
