💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 📱🧠 An eight-year Finnish #study followed 260 #children to see how physical activity and #screentime related to later cognitive processing. More screen time correlated with better #teen cognitive performance, tied to the type of screen use rather than duration. Physical activity benefits also differed by gender, with light activity helping working #memory in #girls. 👉 https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/08/260815064803.htm #development #cognition #kids #science #research #education #parenting #brain #health #adolescence #finland #pediatrics

Scientists tracked kids for 8 years — the screen time result was unexpected

An eight-year Finnish study found that children who spent more time on screens tended to show better cognitive processing as teenagers, challenging common assumptions about screen use. Researchers say the key may be balancing physical activity with screen activities that encourage learning, creativity, and active thinking.

It’s been said for centuries that you cannot think on an empty stomach, and that love goes through the stomach. Although these may seem like merely cute jabs at the simplicity of human nature…

I'm fairly sure most folks I interact with would agree with the statement "LLMs cannot think." pretty uncontroversially. Here's a question for you, though: how do we feel about this statement? "Brains cannot think." (Comments and shares encouraged.) #poll #llm #llms #ai #brains #intelligence #cognition #philosophy #goku

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🐵🔺 Researchers at #CarnegieMellon tested geometric shape matching in #monkeys, #children, and #adults with little formal schooling. Both monkeys and preschoolers relied on intuitive reasoning, while educated adults used symbolic tools. The results suggest geometric intuition is shared across #primates and refined through #learning. 👉 https://www.sciencealert.com/monkeys-have-geometric-skills-on-par-with-human-preschoolers-study-suggests #primates #geometry #cognition #science #math #education #animals #intelligence #psychology

How working memory could give rise to consciousness

Working memory is the information we need to access to complete the tasks we’re engaged in right now, and scientists think it may be closely entwined with consciousness

Cognitive test scores of over 1.2 million Swedish people (mostly men) recorded during military enlistment were combined with tax records on charitable giving, voting records, and vehicle registrations. Those with the highest cognitive scores were more likely to contribute to charities, to vote, and to own an eco-friendly car. Summary: https://www.psypost.org/intelligence-predicts-prosocial-behaviors-like-voting-and-charitable-giving-in-m/ Original paper: https://academic.oup.com/ej/article/135/668/1141/7914156?login=false #Science #Cognition #Intelligence #Prosociality
