Here is how I wasted the last 30 minutes with #mozilla #thunderbird Suddenly, the "add attachment" dialogue window stopped appearing. I could not attach memes to my emails anymore. I messed a bit around, unsuccessfully. Nothing appears anywhere in logs. I also checked #bugzilla , but that bug tracker is a huge mess and I can't wrap my head around it. Defeated, I tried #ai , which, I have to admit, helped. But not immediately. It went carefully through discarding possible culprits one by one, starting from the most common issues, until it found the cause. The culprit, in my case, is a ridiculous #bug (anyone feel free to report it, I won't touch Bugzilla with a stick) I deleted the last directory which I had last used to attach a file from. This path remains stored as default "last used" directory. Thunderbird did not find the directory anymore and decided to FREAK OUT SILENTLY instead of doing something sensible, like defaulting to my home, or at least alerting me that the directory could not be found. I want my 30 minutes back :( #rant #linux #opensource #foss #floss

Here is the other thing, a lot of #FLOSS projects are taking in a lot of #LLM generated code now in the grey-limbo of no policy. AND the longer projects take to ban it, the less likely they are to ever ban it. "No policy" means tacit acceptance is the status quo for a lot of projects. The time for #KDE to ban LLM generated code has kind of passed. I just don't believe it's possible for them. Their unlikely to reverse commits like this. https://www.phoronix.com/news/AMD-More-HDR-KWin-Claude-Code AND even if banning it, didn't require reversing prior commits like that; the tacit acceptance of this kind of code, while there is no policy serves to normalize LLM generated code in the project over time. If you need your DE to be llm-code free; time to move on from KDE. #antiAI #noAI

OpenJDK 27 released to FreeBSD ports tree I just pushed a port for OpenJDK 27 to the main branch of the FreeBSD ports tree. In additions to the upstream changes, the following BSD specific improvements are included: Fix os::naked_short_nanosleep on OpenBSD when < 20 miliseconds.Only return symbols that match the requested address for dladdr(3) on BSD. The latter also reverts the default visibility of symbols in libjvm.so to hidden, which should make loading the library faster, and reduce the memory consumption slightly. As always thanks to @FreeBSDFoundation@mastodon.social for sponsoring my work on the OpenJDK for FreeBSD, and also to Kurt Miller for digging into the details for the BSD specific fixes for this release. #FreeBSD #OpenJDK #mywork #java #jvm #FLOSS

I think, it's actually kinda funny that the #altRight #racist #OvertonWindow #Omarchy guy, DHH, collected 8(11?) million Vespuccistan bucks from several M|Billionairs, that will only BENEFIT our beloved virally licensed #FLOSS ecosystem. Even #Nazi money IS technically ALLOWED to use and contribute to #Linux and stuff, within the license - that's the actual deal. 😉 Sure, a few million bucks is a big deal - but it's not exactly a big deal - we all remain protected by our fave licences, right?!

so i have questions about #Debian:

  1. are members ONLY developers?

  2. only developers argued for/against #LLM #AI?

devs are the last people who should be involved in discussions about the ethics and legality of software. ie:

just reckoned, when a court recently decided you can't claim #copyright on #aislop, it didn't occur to me it means both closed and open copyright.

so, if using LLMs trained on works stolen or added without consent removes any claims of #FLOSS: what is Debian now? …🧵

i may be spitballing here, but in this discussion by @sidereal@kolektiva.socialhttps://kolektiva.social/@sidereal/117179520584766936 it just occurred to me also: https://mastodon.social/@blogdiva/117179717295676352 if #FLOSS developers are going to be paying tokens ―in kind or cash― to a multimillion dollar, venture-capital funded or publicly traded corporation for their #aislop code, then the FREE and LIBRE part of FLOSS isn't anymore. now that part of the FLOSS codebase will depend on that tokenized labor. in other words: LLM/AI is antithetical to FLOSS …🧵

when it comes to Free/Libre Open Source Software, that LIBRE there does all the heavy lifting. it’s why when speaking of #FLOSS we not only say FREE AS IN FREE BEER but also FREE AS IN FREEDOM that LIBRE is there to make sure that the free in there means monetary, social and political relationship. that LIBRE there is to emphasize the FREE is CONSENSUAL AND UN-COERCED which brings me to, not just the scraping without consent but buying & destroying of rare books …🧵

so to recap:

  1. no discussions about #LLM #AI can happen only with developers. you need people equipped with knowledge of #law #ethics #sociology to, if not have all the answers, at least ask the right questions.

  2. the Libre in #FLOSS anchors the sociopolitical implications of FREE and OPEN. it is there to bring in CONSENT. without consent, there is no #FLOSS

  3. since slopware intentionally obliterate consent at scale, LLMs and AI are antithetical to FLOSS, democracy & society.
