@phlash@mastodon.me.uk I just gave the world a re-write of the boot chapter of the #FreeBSD Handbook that does away with bsdlabel and (finally!) uses gpart. https://mastodonapp.uk/@JdeBP/117326574782531292 I wonder whether we can get the FreeBSD Handbook people to embrace this. GEOM was a big new thing in FreeBSD in 2003. I see that the #NetBSD Guide suffers from the same disklabel-centrism, when it is closing in on 2 decades of having the gpt command. @jaypatelani@bsd.network#geom

I actually read the #FreeBSD Handbook's chapter on how FreeBSD bootstraps. It's stuck in 2010. I'm not kidding. There's stuff in there that changed in the FreeBSD 7.3 release notes. FreeBSD can boot on UEFI firmware nowadays, and directly from ZFS datasets. There's a gpart bootstrap command, and syscons does not use bright white for kernel messages any more. In the meantime, the Handbook is telling people how to accidentally destroy their MBR or GUID partition tables with bsdlabel. Do you think that we can get the Handbook people to catch up with the actual operating system, that is 16 years ahead? @jaypatelani@bsd.network I don't want to spoil the #retrocomputing fun, but for those new to the BSDs who do not have the context and might come away thinking that they should move from GUID partitioning, or even MBR-style partitioning with LBAs, to disk labels: The "BSD disklabel" is a partitioning scheme from 1988 that can destroy your GUID partitioning or boot loader if accidentally mis-used. #NetBSD, #OpenBSD, and #FreeBSD haven't agreed on disklabel partition types since IBM's JFS2. They don't agree on what the types for ZFS or HAMMER2 partitions are, for example. It is 32-bit, occasionally 16-bit, in some fields, and mostly has the old 2TiB size limits that the GUID system overcame with 64-bit addressing at the turn of this century. And the on-disk data structures are no longer even compatible as of OpenBSD discontinuing 'v0' in 2025 (with a somewhat optimistic note in the version control history that no-one has written that to disc since 2007). #disklabel #bsdlabel

@rl_dane@polymaths.social Not as damning as one might think. That's a commit to external/ where Christos Zoulas is importing into NetBSD's mirror all of the changes made to the original ISC BIND in version 9.20.24, en bloc. M. Zoulas didn't use the LLM, and the LLM-generated code is only one of a whole slew of changes made to the BIND source tree in that version. The person who uses the LLMs is Michal Nowak who works for ISC in QA. https://gitlab.isc.org/isc-projects/bind9/-/commit/e13302a6bc9b196564b5e7afe703fae24311ceeb #ISC has an explicitly pro-LLM stance on #BIND, and I wouldn't be surprised if #Kea and DHCP follow suit. https://gitlab.isc.org/isc-projects/bind9/-/merge_requests/12363 https://gitlab.isc.org/isc-projects/bind9/-/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#contributing-code There have been good reasons not to use ISC BIND for over a quarter of a century (monolithic software, runs with superuser privileges, multiple hats, lots of parsing). Alas, it is an expenditure of time and effort on the #NetBSD people's parts to switch to a non-LLM-generated DNS server software. But it is well past due. @bpl @jaypatelani@bsd.network @corvus@mapstodon.space @cmccullough@polymaths.social @netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org#AIslop

@rl_dane@polymaths.social#Debian has caught up with that version of #ISC #BIND, as well. https://salsa.debian.org/dns-team/bind9/-/commit/cfc4bd23e8bd21508af8553d853a8974c0cce5f9?file_path=bin%2Ftools%2Fnsec3hash.c#7540f7456b991711c4c6b4efd41fc8b79d2c1174 But its source code repository won't be spotted as LLM-generated software by that WWW site that you are using, because unlike the comparatively diligent M. Zoulas of #NetBSD, Ondrej Sury (of ISC, who also commits directly to Debian) is not copying any of the change descriptions into Debian's source tree changelog, so there is no mention of the word 'Claude' in Debian. https://salsa.debian.org/dns-team/bind9/-/commits/debian%2F9.21/bin/tools/nsec3hash.c @bpl @jaypatelani@bsd.network @corvus@mapstodon.space @cmccullough@polymaths.social @netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org#AIslop

It's a bit of a shame that this fella went to all of that trouble digging through Illumos.

https://youtube.com/v/tUqHsv6JarY?lc=UgwAiVOVkz-sP_j-H7J4AaABAg

#Illumos is one of the few platforms that does not have the header from 4BSD. It was ironically quite the wrong place to look. The GNU and musl C libraries have the header, as do all of #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, and #NetBSD.

The problem is that although has been around since 1983 (1993 in its current form), almost no-one, apart from people like me who write terminal emulators and whatnot and cannot just use cfmakesane(), knows that it is there. It isn't in any manual.

Which leads to things like stty in GNU coreutils going all around the houses to do something simple, too.

@WiteWulf@cyberplace.social @teamonkey@mastodon.social Interesting that some Audi A6's come damn close to that, unladen. An A6 Allroad Quattro 3.0 TDI comes in at 1945 kg, presumably without fuel in the tank. An A6 Saloon Quattro 2.0 TDI comes in at 1980 kg. (Figures per Parkers.) However, I notice that Halford's own WWW site does not give a load rating for those chocks, which sets off alarm bells. And they look bloody small compared to your tyres, which is worrisome given the intended function. Comparable steel chocks, such as the Silverline 525748 or the Heyner UltraStop Pro, seem to only have a rating of 1000 kg per chock, which will be pushing it on those particular A6s with one pair and anything left in the car. There's a greater margin with the less massive models, of course. https://heynershop.co.uk/vehicles-service-repairs/3911-heyner-ultrastop-pro.html I'm with you on returning them, but you might find yourself up against the assertion that a laden A6 exceeds the unadvertised spec. Devin Stone does a 50 minute #LegalEagle analysis of just the first part of the #BricksAndMinifigs #StarWars #LEGO affair in #Utah; says that there's a part 2 to come, covering what happened after the other YouTuber got involved; gives a dense information-packed point by point exposition and analysis of the legal positions, including rebuttals of the absurd ones; and points out how a lawyer would have saved some expensive mistakes from happening before even going to court.

Then the comments section is full of people who just ignore all of that, leap to discussing the not even yet released part 2, confuse 'consignment' and 'contingency' amongst other things, and complain about court costs as the reason that lawyers (who, for one thing, know how to serve notices properly) are expensive.

Undoubtedly fantastic in terms of the YouTube algorithm. Kilocomments! But it is saddening to see so many people who did not take in anything that they just watched.

I haven't managed to track down when they redeveloped the #MarloweArcade, but it has also changed name as well as appearance since M. Collinson's latest photograph. Someone who hasn't been there since the 1980s might even never have seen it as it was originally constructed, since it was built in 1985. https://canterbury-archaeology.org.uk/marlowe-arcade Ironically, some of the stuff that @tony@toot.hoyle.me.uk tracked down in Kent Live is about #Whitefriars being taken over so the Council had free rein over its development. @ianbetteridge@social.vivaldi.net

Oh, no.

I've just commented on an #AndrewBossom video, about #Usenet in the 1990s. I can see this escalating.

But I'm confident that there were no colour TUI newsreaders before tin, which came out in 1991.

No, green on black does not count. (-:

And I was definitely using colour Fidonet and QWK readers in the late 1980s.

Why, yes, this is a point about a 3 second piece of illustrative B roll in a video that isn't about Usenet. But Bossom put the caption on top of it instead of just leaving it alone, so xe only has xyrself to blame. (-:

Here's the 2015 post, by the way:

@HollieK72@mastodonapp.uk Also Judaic. It's worth noting that Biblical scholars have pointed out that Eve never heard the commandment directly, that she must have been told it by Adam, and when she repeats it it is significantly different to what Yawheh actually said. So Adam has part of the blame, too. Funnily enough, even though Adam gets punished like Eve, and is explicitly told that it is for disobeying an instruction by his own action; and even though the Mediaeval notion of Original Sin does stem from Adam, St Augustine even opining that semen (sic!) is how it is transmitted; many people gloss over the bits where Adam is to blame. It's an interesting point that outwith the Abrahamic religions there is nothing quite equivalent. In an alternative universe, where (say) Manichaeism and Zoroastrianism were the major religions of today, we might not have any notion of things being one human sex's fault. @adamrice@c.im @cstross@wandering.shop#Judaism #Genesis #AdamAndEve #Christianity #theology

@mgorny@social.treehouse.systems They may not want to, yet end up having to because it is simply too expensive to maintain in the face of the LLM spiders. This is where the future seems to be heading. #HTTP #AI #LLMs

I wonder whether anyone on the FediVerse knows what obscure #magic ritual can be performed with a box of #teeth, income tax forms from 2003, and a Sacha Distel album. Because the relative has all three. The income tax forms box was not labelled. I think that this was a safety precaution against any old random person rocking up and accidentally raising some ancient Mesopotamian god. The plan is to consign the income tax forms to the flames, and keep the world safe. The boxes of teeth are Holy Medical Relics and Must Be Kept For Future Archaeologists, apparently. I did not dare ask about #SachaDistel after learning that. #ShedClearance

If you want to see way better storytelling than #TheInternship, go for Red Sparrow, or Anna, or Salt; or wind back to before #LizzyGreene was born, and see how this tired old children brought up to be supersoldiers story was updated for the 21st century in #DarkAngel back in 2000.

@bytebro@mastodonapp.uk clang, not GCC. It does have a whole 'sanitization' system. I predict that it won't be any simpler for you than valgrind. (-: https://clang.llvm.org/docs/AddressSanitizer.html MSVC has a SAL system that can be useful for static, rather than runtime, checking of some stuff. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-gb/cpp/code-quality/understanding-sal My experience of valgrind is that it really really slows the program down, and generates tonnes of output that has to be sifted through. But there's no magic bullet that does away with that when one is debugging memory problems. #ComputerProgramming #clang #LLVM #MicrosoftVisualC

I really wish that people would tell all of these people currently panicking about #YouTube not recommending stuff that they subscribed to that *subscribing* to a channel gets its videos listed in one's *subscriptions* feed not necessarily in one's *recommendations*.

Recommendations are an algorithmic guess as to what one might like, and if one never or rarely watches stuff from channels that one subscribed to, one might never be recommended anything from those channels.

Subscriptions are one's statement of what one likes, and the feed is chronological. Like Mastodon.

I'm currently well behind on a couple of subscribed channels, and they're not being recommended to me at all at the moment. But they're all there in my subscriptions feed.

Maybe a lot of people need to add https://youtube.com/feed/subscriptions to their WWW browser bookmarks.

@ancientsounds@mastodonapp.uk Two of the major forces that have led to Guy Fawkes Night being smeared out into #GuyFawkesFortnight are (a) Diwali, and (b) the desire to have family friendly celebrations, and the accommodation to the working week, that leads to people scheduling things for the nearest weekend rather than on the exact day itself. Looking at all of these events, it seems to me that (b) is also making #MayDay become 1st of May Week. #CoventryCharterhouse has celebrated as late as the 6th in years past, according to what I can find. Next Monday is, of course, a Bank Holiday. https://leicestermuseums.org/Guildhall100th #Leicester #LeicesterGuildhall #MaypoleDancing

@mgorny@social.treehouse.systems I hear tell that 402 is popular for responding to LLM scrapers when detected, given that it is a client-end not a server-side problem. (-: Although I think that we need a 437 Not Even If You Paid Me response code. I presume that you are not explicitly detecting them. #HTTP #LLMs

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) is fairly standard #Ghostbusters fare, from the #McKennaGrace 'next generation' movie series rather than from the all-female re-make. There are all of the hallmarks there, from the siren on the hearse to Slimer. The baddie is suitably Ancient. New Yorkers are still New Yorkers. And the Ghostbusters have traps on drones. It's a little thin on the Venkman quips, but the original characters aren't supposed to be the main stars here. That I spent a while after the movie had finished thinking what they could do next in a few years, with Grace an adult, and the facility in Staten Island available, indicates that the series has not yet reached its limit. But: no trilogies, please. This is about the right rate for these movies. And Ackroyd is right about having less of the original cast in whatever movie comes next. It's time. #GhostbustersFrozenEmpire #USMovies

@WiteWulf@cyberplace.social @teamonkey@mastodon.social If it's this one, then you've got two things that you can wave at #Halfords for the unladen weight if they try to play the exceeding the spec card. https://parkers.co.uk/audi/a6/avant-2011/20-tdi-ultra-se-5d/specs/ Just shy of 1.7 tonne, says Parkers. Full tank of fuel will add just shy of 0.06 tonne to that, says the back of my envelope. At 1 tonne per chock, this should still be within the limit. Interesting that it's a weld that seems to have gone. And that those other brands don't have a cross-bar there. I wonder why Halfords adds one. It does look like the failure mode that the cross-bar is aimed at mitigating is that U piece deforming outwards and the upper plate sliding down it as it does. #AudiA6
