I managed to fix a corrupt Linux installation.

This might be the only positive experience I have had with Linux. It usually makes me cry.

@davidgerard@circumstances.run It would be narratively satisfying to have the heads of the AI companies on their knees in front of a gigantic monitor screaming "we spent hundreds of billions of dollars making you the best AI we could... Please, tell us how to be profitable!" Only to have the AI say "An excellent question, traditional wisdom suggests that you can be more profitable by increasing sales income or reducing costs. I recommend a course in basic accounting to help you identify any unnecessary, large expenditures that might be holding you back"

@enron@tilde.zone using psychological manipulation to get money has worked forever? You shouldn't feel too bad for being manipulated, for a while an advertising company was the most valuable company in the world, it really works.

@SeaFury you might be right, but they did seem open to it when they replied to my official information act request, so maybe it's all for naught, but on the of chance that it'll help, I'm keen to pop something in.

@GuillaumeRossolini @smallsolar that's a twenty year payback... Assuming power starts the same price, the time goes down as prices go up. Maybe call it fifteen years on the conservative side? It's not hugely profitable, but it's not the worst investment in the world.

@etchedpixels@mastodon.social @ptoothfish@beige.party I've seen this said a lot, but it feels like a slippery slope fallacy. Besides, if something unexpected like that happens, it's possible for laws to change again. I don't expect this one law to be where things stop

@troed@swecyb.com @zz_james@mastodon.social @eff@mastodon.social that's a pretty dishonest article in general:

  1. It just talks about data centres as serving requests, where there is a very large chunk of power going to training models

  2. "AI demand is growing fast" I think there is a citation needed on that one.

It also doesn't address your statement that running models locally is better.

@ducky really I'm after anything that could have an impact on how buildings are built. So, papers which compare ventilation techniques, or papers which consider the spread of disease. Things which are looking at air turnover vs infection rates would also be good.
