Me: "I think I'll spend the weekend tidying up the house, crocheting, and watching TV."

My Brain: "I think you'll be spending the next two-to-seven weeks obsessively learning embroidery."

Me: "What? No, I just---"

My Brain: "ALL THE HOOPS! TEA TOWELS EVERYWHERE!"

@mcc@mastodon.social Yeah, KeePassXC going this route really hurt. I'm probably going to migrate back to a text file encrypted with gnupg for basic password management, but I have no idea what I'm going to use for one-time passcodes.

@Xtrems876@tech.lgbt Ubuntu's one claim to fame is that it is the only distro almost guaranteed to work out of the box on even the dodgiest laptop hardware. That's literally the only reason I suffer with it. And I've been using Linux since the mid-nineties. This change is probably what finally drives me to Arch.

@nixCraft@mastodon.social H. R. 8250 is going to be even worse than the state-level bills. While we don't have the text of the bill yet, Gottheimer's official statement explicitly says that OSs will have to *verify* age, and that self-reporting isn't enough. https://gottheimer.house.gov/posts/release-gottheimer-announces-bipartisan-parents-decide-act-to-protect-kids-online

Dear #Linux users: Recommend me a non-Ubuntu distribution as my daily driver.

I've been using Linux for more twenty years. Currently, I'm on Ubuntu but I want to ditch it because Canonical.

Some caveats:

1. I'm on a Dell laptop with Nvidia graphics. So, I'd rather not have to roll my own system ala Arch.

2. I play games via Steam/Proton.

3. I write code, in many languages. Distros which make installing multiple compilers/cross-compiling hard are no bueno.

So, whadda ya got?

@airakose@mastodon.gamedev.place Back in the 90s, my circle of friends somehow became a substantially-overlapped Venn Diagram of role-players and Esperanto enthusiasts. One of our number created a magic system which was part "Ars Magicka" and part Esperantist fever dream. Spells were complete sentences built up from Esperanto fragments. This would have been the exact sort of thing we'd have gone for if we'd thought of it. 🤣

Dear #Fediverse: If you use an #Android client for #Mastodon that brings you joy, what is it?

For years, I've been happy using the mobile web interface via Firefox, but with the most recent update(s) to Mastodon it's become almost unusable. I'm sure there will be bug fixes, etc., but I'm looking for alternatives.

So, wadda ya got?

@danirabbit Yes, it is verfication and not just self-reporting. The last half of the bill mandates that a framework for verification be established within 180 days of the bill's enactment. We also have the bill author's own words saying that self-reporting doesn't go far enough and that verification will be required. https://gottheimer.house.gov/posts/release-gottheimer-announces-bipartisan-parents-decide-act-to-protect-kids-online

@gardiner_bryant@mastodon.online @eff@mastodon.social Sadly, yes. I've been in the unfortunate position where my child required a $300 prescription for an antibiotic for a drug-resistant ear infection and I didn't have it. It was a choice between credit card debt or my eight-year-old's hearing. I'm not going to "stand on principle" in that situation.

@hello At first blush, yeah, but reading through the last half of the bill it specifies "verification" and establishes a 180-day window to define what that actually means. And given the statement of the person who wrote the bill is that entering a birthdate isn't enough? I really think we should expect the worst case scenario here. In fact, given what he said, on camera, it is not an alarmist position to believe they'll require us to provide a government ID to use a computer at all.

@gardiner_bryant@mastodon.online @eff@mastodon.social Your question was: "Is it ever okay to use financial intermediaries?" My answer is that without one, my daughter would be deaf today. I believe this situation should not exist, and that my government should provide healthcare for its citizens. Until then? "No payment processors" is an argument from *extreme* privilege. It ignores the fundamental reality that many people are barely holding on. That is reality today. Fix the fucking system before you pull the rug.

For the several years I've been on #mastodon the mobile web interface has been fantastic. I have never even been close to tempted to install an app because it's so good.

This last update? Holy hell, it's janky! The bottom bar floats up at random, pop up frames randomly obscure the screen, wth?

Can someone smarter and with more time than me, who uses mobile Firefox on Android, bug report/fix this shit?
