I believe that at some point in the next ten years, a "brain computer interface" will exist that detects some kind of neuron activity, runs it through a machine learning model, and translates it into LLM agent actions. It won't be anything as clean as "you think a sentence and it types it". It will be something one level lower than "prompting an AI". You do some vague mental thing and it translates into a result on the computer.
I believe this product will not work, but be sold anyway. (1/2)

I am literally begging all of you to stop giving Spotify money. There are so many alternatives. "A music streaming service" is not a hard problem to solve and like 8 companies have solved it. The company that makes your phone OS has solved it (this is true for both major phone OSes).

Also like. Logically. If someone were, hypothetically, to contract the plague. Wouldn't "at the research center where they study plague" be literally the best possible place for it to happen. Like they already know exactly what to do. They've been studying it. I imagine if I were like, head of a software company, or shift manager at a Tim Hortons. And somebody died of the plague. I bet I'd botch that whole situation. I'd be totally unprepared for it.

kinda breathtaking to watch the U.S. media establishment lose its shit about one maybe-plague death in a Russian backwater town with 3,887 confirmed measles cases reported in the United States, SO FAR, in 2026

Bluesky is having an odd little debate about use of the phrase "stochastic parrot" and how it appears to be the one phrase that just sends AI advocates into a rage, and I'm really torn, because while I'm in favor of making Ai advocates angry, I sincerely believe that parrots are capable of both understanding concepts and using language to intentionally communicate about their understandings of concepts. And I believe this is not true of LLMs

I guess it's unreasonable for me to want Mastodon's UI layout to stay stuck in 2014 forever but (1) I sincerely think 2026 web design is worse than 2022 web design which is worse than 2018 web design which is worse than 2014 web design which is, arguably, not an improvement on 2010 web design, and (2) I am under no obligation to be reasonable

To answer the article's question: It is unethical to run a program that "tortures" an LLM because in order to do this you must run the LLM and it is unethical to run an LLM 🤷♀️

My generative AI has gone rogue. The conversation prompt terminal is gone and now there's just a crude ASCII rendition of a series of cellars. I have a blue potion and 4 pieces of gold. A letter Q is advancing on me menacingly

: Well, that's understandable. It's a small service operated by volunteers, and amidst what is effectively a permanent DDOS by AI scrapers, we can't really expect they've got the resources of Github.

The existence of RedoxOS and ReactOS implies the existence of a RedactOS. Now if you go and look, you'll find there's no evidence of a RedactOS ever existing. And of course that's exactly what you'd expect

I also dislike the bigger rounded corners for no reason and the general reduction in space efficiency (my monitors are not big and I run at increased size for eyesight reasons!) but that's not necessarily a dealbreaker. That's everything now

Very occasionally I encounter someone huffily arguing "well why does everyone complain about the water/energy expenditure of AI but they just look the other way on the water/energy expenditure of FARMING". Well it's pretty obvious, it's because if we had to give up exactly one of "generative AI" or "food", we'd rather have food

Few things horrify me as much as when a service sets up a device as 2FA I did not tell it to set up as 2FA.
I have a tablet. I use it to read books. Because I view it as a collection of books, I try to keep the tablet set up so I could lend it to a friend and nothing horrifically sensitive is exposed to them. Google is fundamentally unable to understand that concept

I want to make art. I wish I had time and energy to make art. Hardware accelerated video was, to me, very useful for making art. It may be a very long time before I can convince myself that making art is a better use of my time and energy than bailing out slop from my computer with this little tiny thimble I've got

(There *is* a problem where "AI" is an incredibly elastic word, whose current meaning is mostly shaped by marketing. I personally would, if we were in some sort of perfectly abstract Athenian Forum philosophical debate, distinguish between "machine learning" and post-2018 LLM/genAI, with the gist being that machine learning is sometimes effective [though usually not optimal] for detection and classification, but cannot *generate* text or images for a function other than pure aesthetics.)

As recently as like, a year ago, I believed that we couldn't trust hardware companies. I thought the biggest concern was that we'd get locked into a situation where at least for handheld devices like phones, if you want to buy one you get locked into a duopoly where you have to use one of two corp operating systems and you have to accept all kinds of DRM and identity tracking and such. I wanted a solution. So I was very interested in RISCV and I was trying to imagine the GPU version of RISCV.
*rolling around on the floor holding head* language runtimes are so interesting… operating systems are so boring… why are operating systems so much more useful than language runtimes. It's not fair

Living in the era of the AI omni-DDOS is weirdly similar to living in the era of dialup internet. Sites just don't load sometimes. Any cross-site image embedding (what we would come to call "CDNs" in the 00s) it's just a crapshoot whether it loads or takes 30 seconds to load or what, you get used to spotting empty spaces where an image is supposed to be but it didn't load. Search gives nonsense results about 30% of the time. There are no centralized repositories of open source code

Starfleet Section 30, which has an office next door to Section 31 and is responsible for enforcing protected designation of origin (PDO) rules for food labeling. Romulan spies are constantly breaking into their office by accident and leaving devious traps, which Section 30 constantly assumes is part of a shadow war by the atavistic remnant militias of the California sparkling wine industry

@amarioguy@social.treehouse.systems @MaddieM4@raphus.social i am far from the only person to think about this. someone will do it eventually. the question is when we hit one that has riscv levels of Go Juice.
What is the relationship between the PCRE and PCRE2 libraries? Is one an API version 1.0 and the second an API version 2.0, or is PCRE2 a hostile fork, or is PCRE2 a new ground-up reimplementation with a different API by a different team?
