@Devorppa@aus.social yes, this is known
but this was a very small café that only exists to extract some incremental revenue from people who are waiting for their cars to be clean. I really doubt in this instance that there was any deep spooky market segmentation magicks going on 💁♀️

@decryption@aus.social oh get fucked! 🙅♀️
car designers obviously don’t have security brains or consider failure modes, that’s seven kinds of disaster waiting to happen
I wouldn’t even be surprised these days if, for bonus points, some of the apps require an active internet connection as well to even work 🤪
so many people in tech are just stunningly bad at their jobs 😡

@decryption@aus.social gaming isn’t my primary use for GPU but it’s not not a use 🙃
a 40xx or even 30xx or equivalent would be fine, but newer discrete GPUs are more likely to have GDDR6 & don’t have to share system memory (and I assume have a separate bus for GPU mem bandwidth) so discrete GPU is my preference if possible. I know I’m pushing up against the laws of physics, and the “usual” way to “solve” that is to throw a truckload of 💰💰💰 at the problem, but I can’t bring myself to drop a bananapants amount of money on a laptop (most of my laptops were secondhand when I got them, apart from my chonky Linux beast)
thx for the suggestion 💕 I have been considering laptops with higher-spec integrated graphics & looking at benchmark comparisons, so it’s on my radar(ish)
my mental benchmark is “can I get something in a light 14” laptop that outperforms my chonky Linux laptop (2017 System76 Oryx Pro 3 that has 32GB DDR4, a 1070, 2x 500GB M.2 SATA SSDs & a 2TB 2.5” HDD)”?^ 🤔
that’s my current workhorse when I need some grunt, but it’s heavy enough that I use it less often than my old MacBook Pro 13” (so, no GPU) that’s frequently underpowered but much more pleasant to use on the couch & can actually last more than 1.5 hours on battery when I’m using it out of the house / office 💁♀️
I’m in the process of ditching macOS as much as I can on my personal machines (I’ve long since ditched Windows), but I’ll likely keep a smallish macOS partition on the old MacBook Pro for syncing stuff to & backing up my iPhone until I find some solid, non-clunky solutions to that problem as well (no, I’m not moving to Android for my primary phone – I have a spare Android phone that I used to use for work but… eugh 😜)
^ and doesn’t cost $5k+ 🙅♀️

@benno@eigenmagic.net @decryption@aus.social I looked closely at the KeyboardIO when it first came out & IIRC @KathyReid@aus.social loaned me hers for a while to try, but between the aforementioned muscle memory mountain^ to climb & the price tag I didn’t end up getting one ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I’ve also tried a MoonLander courtesy of a loaner from @jambulance@hachyderm.io but same same on the barriers 😕
given that I’m “fun”employed atm (& am no longer in roles where I routinely have to swap to using other people’s crappy keyboards), I really should just bite the bullet & climb both the ortho & touch typing hills at the same time… 😩
^ possibly an objective molehill, but still

@decryption@aus.social well, $360 is objectively a lot for a keyboard – especially for those of us who grew up poor & will never really be able to shake all the things that flow from that experience 💁♀️
I’m interested to know which #keeb, & what are the 🦄 features that draw you to it over other keebs 👀 (I’m not looking to dissuade you, ofc., just interested)
for me, I’ve owned multiple #MechKeebs, but I don’t think I’ve paid more than ~$150 for any of them and most were ~$120-$130 (and I agonised over spending the money on my first one for, I suspect, similar reasons)
but I have pretty basic requirements for #keebs:
– mech switches (or equivalents, I guess, I haven’t really strayed much from Cherry MXes)
– good switches – I’ve tried Cherry MX browns, blues, reds, & LP reds (on my portable keeb) but tend to prefer blues for both the tactility & the sound (unless I’m in an office where such noises might get me stabbed in the eye with a fork 🤪)
– decent RGB lighting (with shine-through keycap legends), both for the ~~cYb3rpUnk~~ aesthetic 🤪 & for allowing me to actually see the keycap legends[1] in suboptimal office lighting 😩
– not-shit software for setting / saving lighting profiles (I’m givin’ you side-eye, #CoolerMaster 😮💨) OR
– decent on-keeb capabilities for setting RGB layout & profiles (which is the one area that Cooler Master[2] actually do – er, did 🪦 – pretty well)
I’m too old[3] to re-train my muscle memory to a split ortho layout, so I haven’t / won’t (? 🤔) explored that particular expensive rabbit hole…
weirdly, for whatever reason keebs are one of the few areas that I’ve been able to pretty quickly get to “this’ll do nicely, I don’t need to keep agonising over optimising this on an ongoing basis…” 🎉
1 see [3]
2 my daily drivers (home / work / portable) are all Cooler Masters at this point, with a couple of other cheapies floating around for various projects that I may or may not ever get to 🙃
3 not really 😜 but the typing performance hit is a PiTA akin to when I’ve attempted to finally become fully touch-typing capable – I was hunt-&-pecking on a terrible chiclet keyboard for my first computer, which was before I got to do a typing elective in secondary school (I fell in the gap between “teach the girls typing so they can be secretaries” & “teach all the kids typing so they can use a computer effectively” – which TBH I’m not sure we ever actually did in Aus, just somehow assuming that kids would become touch typists by osmosis like we assume that they’ll become “good at computers” or “digital natives” by repeatedly pushing buttons on their pocket rectangles until the slot-machine pays out & then just remembering the sequence of button pushes…[4])
4 …but I digress 🤪

@emily@fedi.uni.horse OK I assume this is a quasi-shitpost ’coz of the Jira ref, and acknowledging that “this one neat tool will be the One True Forever [Tool|System]™, I’ve been using an app / platform (appform? platpp? 🤔) for almost a year that has been somewhat helpful & that I think I can use longer term
I’m happy to share if you’re interested, but am also here for the tired ADHD shitposting if you’re looking for solidarity rather than solutions 🧸 ✊

they did not fix the thing they broke, claiming that sometimes things just break & it’s completely a coincidence that it only broke when they worked on it…
…but they’re happy to fix it for $130 in parts & ~1 hour in labour (so maybe $310-$350+) 😡🤬
perhaps needless to say, I will not be paying them to fix the thing they broke – I’ll be paying someone else to fix the thing they broke & looking for another mechanic longer term 😩
it’s not like I need my… ⚹checks notes⚹ …front fucking airbag to deploy if I’m in a collision anyway, right…? 😕

hi again lovely #FediFrens 👋
yesterday’s #rec didn’t get me any answers on that combo so I’ll open it up to a couple of other options…
so – is anyone +running #Linux* happily [1] on a 14” [2] laptop with a GPU from #MSI, #ASUS #ROG or #TUF, (or others)?
requirements (somewhat flexible:
– light, pref. ~1.5kg +/-
– 14” max. unless it’s super-light with good battery (so a thin 1.5kg 15.6” or even 17” with 12 hour battery (🦄) would be fine 🤪)
– 64GB DDR5 RAM or more (more is better, DDR5 preferred but I’m flexible on that)
– good battery life, where “good” is >4 hours but longer life is better
– decent GPU, but it doesn’t have to be bleeding edge (a 40xx or even 30xx or equivalent would be fine)
bonus points for:
– switching between onboard & discrete GPU works acceptably
– sleep & suspend work (consistently)
edit: added the RAM requirement that I left out of v1 🤦♀️
I’ve added a RIDICULOUSLY HUGE (completely optional, obvs.) poll, pls reply with a different answer if you use something you think might fot my requirements 🙏 🙃
pls #boost4reach ✨💕✨ 🙏
