If I was a pharmaceutical company, I would do a safety study on taking existing antihistamine drugs, halving the dosage but taking twice a day (or even not halving dosage). Then when that passes sell the product as "ultra effectiveness" premium brand. I say this because I'm pretty certain that the effectiveness doesn't last 24hrs under the current scheme.

Windows 11 26H2 is a "predictable and low-disruption update" rolling out now (Via The Sizzle)

I find it hilarious that a low disruption update is now news worthy. Well done everyone

Your honor, I wasn't hacking, my AI agent (curl) went rouge

Reminded of that video showing roboforming which has people walking around robots that can fucking kill in a blink, completely ignoring or oblivious to the risk https://www.reddit.com/r/OSHA/comments/16wfxwy/3m_long_robot_arm_no_cage_around_it_no_optical/

He added the trains were often crowded, with commuters having to stand in the aisles for the journey to the CBD.

The ABC spoke to several people who had caught the bus to the station or walked. All agreed more car parking spaces were needed.

Our public transport is so crowded. Solution? More car parks at the train station.

In 1 week, 4 days, I'll be doing the Around the Bay 50km ride. Since I'm doing the shorter ride I'm going to attempt to stream it - should be roughly 2 hours long. If you'd like to join me, save the date/time, or follow on https://twitch.tv/xssfox Date: 2026-10-18 Time: 7:45am +11:00 Your timezone: https://www.inyourowntime.zone/2026-10-18_07.45_Australia.Melbourne

Weird doesn't mean bad* *Except when an engineer says "huh that's weird"

Oh damn, I want to show my support for public transport, but I can't decide if I prefer the XTrap over the Velocitys. And the E class is kind of nice. What shall I do??? Fear not! Thanks to https://melbournesptgallery.weebly.com/ you can download, rescale and print out on sticker paper various PT things and make cursed combinations.

What a week

A lot of problems can be better solved by taking them to your local autistic person.

Coca Cola, which had a licence to extract 35 megalitres, renamed the spring "Mount Franklin" as part of a re-branding exercise. Their peak per annum extraction was over 15 ML and the total to around 1986 was 14.52 ML. The Mount Franklin trade name remains nationally iconic and profitable for the company, though no water has been extracted from the original site for approximately 35 years.

TIL where Mount Franklin is, along with Coca Cola lies - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Franklin_(Victoria)

heck yeah, receiving VK5 Horus balloon launch from Melbourne - 530km away.

Once again looking at contract wording for things and seeing "99.9% percentage of time that the backups are performed on time and free from errors and omissions" It seems fine until you go to actually apply it. What time frame? A day, a month, a year? Let's say a month, and our backup policy includes 10 resources backed up daily. A single failed backup drops us to 99.67% That's fine, we just run a bunch of reliable backups at the end of the month to catch up? Some of our backups are continuous point in time recovery. Do these count as 1 backup or 20 billion? If the continuous backup needs to restart is that a failure?

Finally got around to setting the dynamic model on the gps i use for NTP to "stationary", so now the balcony has stopped moving around. This makes going outside a lot easier and safer.

I think my next role will be "Ai Optimisation Engineer". I join your company and remove all the Ai.

Everyone complains about ebikes and illegal motorbikes, but if you really want to fix society you should need a licence to operate an umbrella or a leaf blower.

Key station in Melbourne Airport Rail plan to be built by 2031

Is the key station Melbourne Airport Station? That seems like the only key station required.

I wonder if I could hack a motor xenon timing light to activate strobecom traffic lights

Happy tzdata release to all those who celebrate

Nailed it Google

AI datacenters are dumb. But this hysteria is just so stupid. It moves the problem to "it's fine as long as its not near me", EVEN THOUGH IT HAS SO LITTLE IMPACT COMPARED TO LITERALLY ANY OTHER INDUSTRY THAT COULD BE PLACED THERE.

how city planning should be according to Karen interviewed in a cafe by the ABC

One of my sub dreams got copyright striked for background music so my main dream didn't know what happened in it.

LG Aircon split talking been inside and outside unit seems to be a one wire uart centered at 35v and pulled down to 0 for one side and pulled up to 65v on the other running at 150 baud. 7 byte packets at 8n1. Last byte is checksum which is sum first 6 and xor with the last. The result should be 0x55. If you want to tinker probably easier to look at the 5v signal before the optoisolator

National Police Remembrance Day has once again closed a critical cycling path in Melbourne without notices on Melbourne council site or vic traffic.

Single lever controlling both bike brakes. Outbraker sells a splitter but also an ABS system. Ok I initially thought this was a bad idea but I'm actually warming up to it. Apart from the obvious accessibility benefits, it allows you to slam a single lever in an emergency. You won't go over the bars because the ABS prevents that. So max stopping with very little effort. Would like to try this on a demo bike. https://outbraker.com/shop/pro-n-road-caliper-type/

More than half of all allegations made against Australian Federal Police officers have been "finalised" without investigation due to the use of discretionary powers the national watchdog says pose a risk of "denying procedural fairness".

Amazing. sigh

this shits me so much. In ye old times in macos you could make a new "service" for a network interface, then assign a static ip or subnet to that interface. New macos versions still allow you to create the service, but the network panel redesign punts you wifi settings of the main adapter, so you can no longer set the IP address. So ( at least for wifi) the ability of add a new service is effectively useless. The people making these settings panes are so disconnected from what they do now.

Well I reverse engineered a bit of our Aircon and cleaned up some webhorus crap to make it easier to develop on

This is probably the least active I've been in 5 years. In the last two weeks I've done one little 3k walk. I'm guessing the earliest I'll be able to do something like run or ride will probably be Wednesday and honestly I'm a bit terrified of that.

@firstyear@infosec.exchange are you setting the strapping pins? https://docs.espressif.com/projects/esptool/en/latest/esp32c3/advanced-topics/boot-mode-selection.html

@napili@hachyderm.io this is why I believe actual site reliability engineering is more vibes than anyone cares to admit

@vxo@digipres.club @foone@digipres.club I feel like I triggered some sort of antibot thing the other day because it was giving medical research papers for every third result on a query not even remotely related

@firstyear@infosec.exchange other thing to try is a lower baud rate
