Phosh's BengalOS booting on a SHIFT8. Thanks to the #Linux #sc7280 maintainers for their work!

That's the first device booting on BengalOS that is still available for sale (and will be for some time). There's plenty of stuff missing on the kernel side to make that usable, but it's a start.

@fizzo@chaos.social you find the gdk-pixbuf patches I mentioned at the top of this MR: https://salsa.debian.org/BengalOS-team/pkgs/gdk-pixbuf/-/merge_requests/2

@okias@floss.social Let me grab that click bait 🤭 : There are people that have other priorities like the amount of firmware on the device, separation of components on the PCB, no proprietary hypervisors, full control over all bootloaders, etc. So I think as a community we have interest in devices like the @pine64@social.treehouse.systems #PinePhone's or @purism@social.librem.one 's #Librem5 to continue. It's also good to have devices that ship Linux out of the box.

Got Phosh's immutable BengalOS to boot on a Google Pixel 3A. There's quiet a bit of work left to make that usable but I'm already looking forward to try some of Phosh's features for immutable on a real device rather than a VM image. This is only possible due to the immense work of @mobian@fosstodon.org and @postmarketOS@social.treehouse.systems . #Phosh #BengalOS #LinuxMobile #immutable #mkosi

Dear #gitlab a Work Item is not something I want to be concerned with in #FreeSoftware stuff I do in my free time. Can't we have names that are more motivating like "Puzzles to solve"?

With a bit of #blur in #phoc we can have more vivid backgrounds while text still remains easy to read. As this happens on the compositor side there's basically no performance impact (but we rely on two small, not yet merged wlroots patches). This is mostly groundwork for more things to come.

There's more work needed to make this usable (we don't have arm64 docker containers of vosk-server and it's not in any distros but most of it is in alpine already). There's also room for improvement regarding the recognition (it likes to guess "the" when there's no input as you can see at the end of the video). If you want to help out, jump into https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/Phosh/stevia/-/merge_requests/279 . Thanks to dogman in the FLX1 channel for mentioning vosk which led me to vosk-server.

@isyourbrainFOSS@mastodon.social Whether it becomes daily drivable (as often in Free Software) depends to a large degree on what people make out of it (i.e. contribute patches). We also learned that nobody takes you seriously if you don't have something to download but that's a totally different story, people have been conditioned by iOS and Android, and we can't simply undo that. 2/2 @phosh@social.phosh.mobi @mobian@fosstodon.org @postmarketOS@social.treehouse.systems

@isyourbrainFOSS@mastodon.social Having device support is necessary to test drive some of @phosh@social.phosh.mobi 's features for immutable as there are some limitations to what you can do in a VM and some problem's only come up in certain setups (like all the firmware issues on qcom) and you only get a "feel" if it works alright if you use it daily. As one purpose is to make current development branches available easily targeting immutable is a good fit too as you can roll back without issues. 1/2 @mobian@fosstodon.org @postmarketOS@social.treehouse.systems

The USB-C port on my @nitrokey@social.nitrokey.com pro 3 just fell off completely after just over one year of use.

Looking at the soldering that doesn't look surprising. Can someone recommend a more sturdy replacement to hold #GPG keys, uses USB-C and works well on #Debian ?

One thing that bothered me since some time is that for switching between different 🎶 players required to🔓 the 📱 .

So e.g. pausing #gnome podcasts to listen to music via #gapless needed ever so many steps. I've thus added a lockscreen plugin to #phosh that tracks all currently running media players that use #mpris and allows to interact with them.

This is all pretty rough still but I can hopefully brush it up for 0.48 (https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/Phosh/phosh/-/merge_requests/1729).

We get the list of controls from #wireplumber too and #phosh's volume slider gets the highest priority volume so the top panel's volume slider does "the right thing" by default. @tbernard@mastodon.social our experience as @ev@social.phosh.mobi when talking to policy makers on these topics are:

  1. We're doing it later as non-US cloud is already hard enough (most common one)
  2. They're not aware (basically ignoring what they're using every day)
  3. They think it's the easy part as long as the apps they develop are #OpenSource for Android

…but I'm positive that we can move some goal posts in 2026 in that regard.

@nivea It wont help much as the restyle depends on apps picking up the theme changes, not the compositor drawing them differently so our best bets are currently: reduce number of transitions, speed up the transition itself. Where it can help is e.g. a grescale mode. That's compositor driven and we can blend into that.

@affe_null The Librem5's M4 core is mostly unused under Linux and could also benefit here to handle some things in suspend. Maybe call it openmcp as it is currently for M* cores and hints at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Tron_(franchise)_characters#Master_Control_Program 😃

@DrewNaylor@mastodon.online @CalcProgrammer1@mastodon.social That's why stevia supports --allow-replacement. Someone would just need to fix https://gitlab.gnome.org/World/Phosh/squeekboard/-/issues/361 and it would be simple to switch back and forth in the running session between different keyboards (I do it all the time between stevia development and stable versions)

So it's all possible, relevant keyboards just need to follow along.

@Glenlivet @pi_crew As with other things (cellbroadcast, sensors, notch support, hatpic, LEDs, …) we aim to implement the common bits in a desktop environment agnostic way and we'll try the same with this one. It's then up to the respective DEs (the gnome-shell fork in this case) whether they want to pick it up.

@diederickdevries Wakeup for calls/SMS etc already works on all devices I'm aware of, L5 and PP do this since ages. The issue with QCom devices is that they wake up *too* *often* (e.g. on GSM Cell strength changes), that's why it is disabled by default on these. There's ModemManager mrs working towards fixing this. Waking up for "notifications" (which in fact is working up on push notifications) is another matter that needs device dependent fixes (or periodic wakeups) as workaround.

@benjistokman You mean for the enable/disable button? I think we want a keybinding and maybe an indicator in Phosh's top-bar (rather than the OSK) so we can save that screen estate? That would allow to hide the on screen keyboard also on mobile if one wants text input only. Does that make sense?

@DF5RE Thanks for the hint, we want OSK integration on mobile I guess so you can use it everywhere you input text. That frees apps from caring about support and it's the same (switchable) engine for all inputs. I had looked at the engines used by speech note before and whisper will be an additional one we want to add to stevia once vosk is working properly.
