RE: https://mastodon.social/@gvwilson/116997366488785600 I see arguments like this *all the time* and it’s so depressing. It’s just not true that most opponents to genAI don’t understand its utility… it’s that we think the ethics *actually matter*. I have a good understanding of the capabilities of these systems. I understand their utility. But if the ethics are crap (and they are), why should I care? This framing is just to make people who want to use them feel more comfortable setting ethics aside.

In his essay on Salvador Dali, Orwell argued that because Dali was a repulsive human being, the right wouldn't admit that he was a great artist; conversely, because he was a great artist, the left wouldn't admit he was a repulsive human being. I'm seeing the same thing with AI: because it's unethical, one side won't acknowledge that it's useful, but because it's useful, the other side won't acknowledge that it's unethical. Time to make another cup of tea…

6yo has been on-and-off afraid of spiders recently, but also watched Into the Spider-Verse last week. Me: “Want to check the mail?” 6yo: “If there’s no spiders or webs, yes.” Me: “But spiders are your friends now!” 6yo: Me: “Maybe if you get bit you’ll get special powers.” 6yo: “Not in this world.” Me: “Oh, that’s not where special powers come from in this world?” 6yo: “Nope.” Me: “Where do they come from in this world?” 6yo: “Your heart.” 😳😭

I just went to the store to buy a bunch of air filter refills, and learned that they now have Bluetooth enabled ones. Not, like, the whole machine, but the actual individual filters have little tags on them with some sort of Bluetooth ability. I considered buying one just to see what it does/shows up as, but didn’t want to encourage that BS.

The blowtorch was a whole lot of fun, and the oiling process was very calming. The end results look really nice (sort of a shame they’re getting buried in the ground, mostly; if I had known, I might’ve budgeted more time and materials to do the whole thing); I want a lot more things to look this way now. I can feel the call of the programmer-to-woodworking pipeline.

@ifixcoinops @rose_alibi I was in a pizza place yesterday with my kid and there were two coin-op video games. We walked up to the register, talked to the actual human behind the counter, turned a few dollars into quarters, put them on the face of the machine, and just had a lovely time. There’s an arcade-ish place we go to once in a while that uses the card system, and at their scale I get why they do it, but this just felt so much nicer.

@thgie What’s frustrating is that while this “proof” might be new, model collapse has been known—and observed!—for years. But even when it’s observed, sycophants and the very gullible say these things are “creating new languages” or whatever, as though it’s a step *towards* AGI… no, they’re just breaking, failing to do the job for which they were built! The term “model collapse” did help with the meter for my Taylor Swift rewrite: https://pdx.social/@a/113400143539613625

I just read someone complaining that the Raspberry pi zero 2w was too slow again, and, like, okay, it’s not the fastest thing you could buy. But also: it’s got 4 1Ghz cores. I built a “jukebox” that played compressed audio it pulled off the network with a 90Mhz Pentium. Friggin’ web browsers…

I'm in a weird situation at home where we currently have *three* internet connections (which is between 2 and 3 too many), each of which sucks, and one sucks in very different ways than the other two. Are there any home options (e.g. OpenWRT?) that can do anything clever with multiple upstream connections, beyond just fallback/warm spare? Can you split traffic meaningfully without the upstream provider's help?

(To be clear, I think “almost uniformly viewed as an outstanding success“ is about a general read of his job on net. There are certainly plenty of things to criticize before this 18 month flame out; I’d start with the emphasis on services revenue, which I’d argue has come at the cost of overall experience.)
