Please talk me out of upgrading my lathe to a Monarch 10ee art deco masterpiece.

Who can forget the joy of scrolling usenet groups alphabetically to find alt.fan.vampire.flonk.flonk.flonk

Please remember to turn the shadow rendering back on after the equinox.

@jwz@mastodon.social we fax our overseas ballot. Downside is there is no secrecy but we do get an email confirmation in reply that it was received and accepted.

@mntmn@mastodon.social also a powerful enough eject mechanism to look like a floppy in zero g

Today's #CarryShitOlympics entry is two hundred and eighty liters of dirt.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Is this the right size flower vase for my bike? #CarryShitOlympics

A very quiet Sunday morning in Amsterdam.

And a photo of me on the steering oar of the Draken as we sailed away from the #Odyssey and back to Norway.

Sometimes I don't understand merchandise branding deals.

The big ring gear was falling off the drive gear, so the new version has double helical herringbone, which also looks 37% cooler.

Is it accurate to the micron? No. Does it have a mirrored surface finish? Also no. Is it good enough? Definitely maybe.

A quick turn on the lathe made the axle that the giant ring gears will hang from.

No powered winches - twelve crew work together to hoist the yard with the sail already unfurled.

I decided to make the wheels rotate continuously rather than with an odometer mechanism and now have the first 12 bits on my Unix epoch clock!

Then we feasted in their long house and slept on their furs by the fire.

Puzzle piece printing the giant ring gear seems like it will work.

Almost no blocks or pulleys, so grab a handful of sheep tallow to lubricate the tar covered lines.

@dianea@lgbtqia.space most modern appliances have some sort of computer inside

When we reached Norway we moored for a day at Avaldsnes Viking farm.

Hope you're having a better day than the folks at Ziggo who pushed a remote firmware update that bricked eleven thousand customers' cable modems. https://tweakers.net/nieuws/251384/ziggo-vervangt-11000-modems-van-zakelijke-klanten-vanwege-technisch-defect.html (in case you were wondering why we were offline for much of Monday...)

The Draken is also an experiment in figuring out how to sail a Viking square rigged longship. New crew needs to learn the old ways.

The redesign also required a new axle to be turned in the garage. This probably could be 3D printed for the prototype, but it's nice to be able to make the spinning bits more robust.

Sending postcards from the top of Germany.

@jwz@mastodon.social NYC cut down on idling trucks by offering a hefty bounty for shooting a three minute video of the running vehicle and its license plate. I wish they would have done the same for cars in the bike lanes! https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/22/nyregion/they-earn-tens-of-thousands-by-turning-in-idling-trucks.html

Emily Wilson, who produced an excellent iambic pentameter translation of the #Odyssey, has harsh words about Nolan's version's lack of depth (and also its lack of nudity). https://www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v48/n14/emily-wilson/an-uncomplicated-man

I made a quick 15 minute print in order to validate my math that the 8 tooth gear will make a quarter turn, although it's not clear that it's doing that. Seems slightly more than 1/4 but not quite 1/2.

Deutsches Bahn "on time": my arrival in Duisburg was three minutes late, but so was my departure onward to München.

The #Odyssey behind the scenes photos are still under NDA, so please enjoy these post-filming photos of sailing Draken back to Norway.

The latch hook is an amazing tool. I need to grind the blunt edge into a smooth point, but it's really useful even without that.

Almost ready to start tapering for the toes!

That Oslo heel seems to work! Now to make the rest of the sock with Coppergate

Decided to close the thumb on the second mitten. A big advantage of nalbinding is that if it gets in the way, I can just cut it off without concern for the rest of the fabric.

The Unix epoch rollover clock works, although I'm not happy about the overall design.

@azonenberg@ioc.exchange be careful with the grid voltage if you summon the old gods from their slumber in the vacuum tubes

@ma3ke@hachyderm.io the scissors are CANARY brand and they have a tiny leather scabbard! I think I found them in a Tokyo knitting shop.

@ruari@velocipederider.com my experience is that there's a distance at which the camera can read the QR code, but not trigger the NFC, so it is possible to approach slowly enough that the QR works just before the contactless payment triggers. this is not ideal since it requires lots of careful fiddling and maybe it's easier to just pop a shell on the turnstile to hack your way in.

@ruari@velocipederider.com this has been a problem with transit systems since at least 2017 when NS added contactless payment to the turnstiles. It's frustrating that it is still an issue almost a decade later!

@vulgalour@birdbutt.com it's a thread cutter - there's a captured circular blade that you can slide a piece of yarn against. Or maybe an ornate spark plug gap setting tool.
