I asked here on Mastodon if rooftop solar panels could reduce incidence of roofs catching fire during a wildfire incident. Replies were so negative that I was too intimidated to ask anyone else. I did find a website that explains it. (1) Sparks landing on panels don't cause damage as long as electrical components are properly shielded; (2) use of local solar may cut down on grid-caused fires, and (3) solar power can operate pumps, etc., during a power outage. https://www.solarpermitsolutions.com/blog/solar-wildfire-hazard-areas-safety-guide #solar

@colinpurrington @2legged An ovillanta is a bit of a different approach. A tray of water is set out; mosquitoes lay eggs in the water, Once a week the water is run though a screen, removing any larva. The same water is put back in the tray, because now it smells like mosquito larva, which will attract more mosquitos to lay eggs there. No chemicals needed, but you must remember to use the screen every week. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ovillanta #mosquito

Back in the winter folks here helped me connect my 100W solar panel to a power station. In my yard in Ontario, I set up the panel in a sunny location. The most I was able to gather was 25W. Local friends with panels don't get the rated power either.

It dawned on me that the panels have to work safely in Arizona where the sunlight is more intense. I found an article which shows how to use an inexpensive reflector to move more light onto the panel. It worked!

Putting Reflectors On Solar Panels to Increase Power

A study showed that reflectors on solar panels can increase their performance by up to 30%. The continuing drop in cost for home solar power generation has led to a dramatic increase in the rate of installations, for both residential and commercial use. Increasing the yield through reflection could make that an even…

As a mother, I appreciate Anna Jarvis' perspective on Mother's Day. No need to buy anything! Especially imported flowers or cards purchased from giant companies.

A visit or a call, an expression of affection and an update on one's offspring's activities is great. For mothers of at-home children, some time off from daily responsibilities might be nice.

I don't know enough about electrical safety to pick out likely products. https://www.cbc.ca/news/climate/plug-in-balcony-solar-panels-1.7618883

Plug-in balcony solar panels could mean cheaper power. But Canada needs to get on board first | CBC News

How would you like to lower your electricity bill and help power your home using an abundant renewable energy source — the sun? There is an affordable, do-it-yourself solution for people who own houses, apartment renters and condo dwellers, that doesn't cost buckets of money or require any sort of tedious installation. But, it's not widely available or permitted in Canada yet.

@SteveWatson@ottawa.place I think in most places where balcony solar has been approved, the regulations limit it to something like 800W for the reason you mention. That's maybe 4 panels. It's not as good as having a proper roof setup where you can sell electricity to the utility when you aren't using it, but still it seems that after several years it pays for itself in lower electrical bills. And since there's no electrical installation, in can be used by renters, and taken with them when they move.

@brianb@fosstodon.org Yes, solar would be great for that, since hot sunny days are when you need the cooling most. I've run across several interesting solar energy developments lately. One is solar-in-a-box; a farmer was using it to power his milking machines. He liked it because it didn't need much installation and he could rent it, or buy it and resell later if he didn't want it any more. It wasn't this particular company but I can't find the original posting: https://cdssolar.com/new-technology-container-foldable-photovoltaic-panels-designed-to-adapt-to-various-application-scenarios/ #solarenergy

Every line of AI-generated code and documentation needs to be examined, verified and certified by a real person. Over time we'll find out when this saves work and when it doesn't.

@SteveWatson@ottawa.place That's true. I understand that these particular panels have a built-in inverter and some circuitry that detects a power outage (or, I suppose, a pulled circuit-breaker) and automatically shuts off the flow. That way it's safe, but can't be used as emergency power - unless, I suppose, you unplug it from the wall and use it to charge a battery as you can with ordinary portable panels.
