Kiddo is taking a class wherein they learn how to program in a visual block language that spits out #Arduino flavored c++. They load it onto their Arduino nano and then, eg, make a rainbow on some RGB LEDs.

I had the distinct privilege tonight of walking kiddo through the #esphome config that controls the LED annunciator in our kitchen and watching them draw parallels to their code from class. They even started talking, unprompted, about how they debugged their program in class.

I am extremely proud of my little nerd.

Power outage popped another old GE/Jasco zwave+ outlet. The relay started flipping on and off repeatedly. I thought we had a roof leak for a bit until we found the culprit. They're just so fragile!

Had a replacement in the drawer so back in business in less than 10 minutes, which is honestly a nice feeling.

@badnetmask@hachyderm.io @homelab@fedigroups.social there's a thing that goes by many names (ex: "micro segmentation") but the gist is literally that: an automatically provisioned VLAN per client with automatic routing rules. Usually a big iron enterprise thing but there's an open source wifi router project out there whose name I can't remember.

The problem with only having time to work on #homelab stuff in the evening is that I'd rather just read a book.

Tonight's @homelab@fedigroups.social adventure has been converting one weird bespoke thing to another weird bespoke thing.

I have a handful of docker services that I want to be able to connect to remotely but I don't want to expose their ports to every interface. Previously, I was pushing the node's tailnet ip into a TAILNET_IP env var and then publishing the port like this:

- ${TAILNET_IP}:9100:9100

That kind of sucks, though, because it means the service is dependent on tailscale to start up, even if that port is only for metrics or whatever.

Tonight I taught my deploy harness to generate a tailscale serve raw config for the host that I set with `ssh root@host tailscale serve set-raw` after the deploy is done.

Then switched all of the instances of the above syntax to :

- 127.0.0.1:9100:9100

This exposes them to localhost, which is still as secure as before because the docker host could always access the container IP directly.

Pretty happy with the result. One less thing for containers to directly depend on.

Not me significantly glancing at my #selfhosted #forgego again.

I should actually calculate the 9s on that thing so I can say with confidence that it has better uptime than GitHub.

My #homelab is in a kind of "limp home" mode. Minimal important services moved to docker on the N150 Proxmox host, which I know is ill advised but getting GPU passthrough working for Jellyfin was beyond my skills tonight. Tomorrow I think is the day I'm going to pave over Proxmox with plain Debian on the big machine.

Reminder that SeerXNG is a thing and is remarkably easy to install. The tricky part is making it the default search engine in iOS and macOS.

Google is transforming Search from a list of links into an AI-powered experience filled with conversational answers, autonomous agents, and interactive interfaces — a shift that could further reduce traffic to publishers across the web.

@RxBrad@mastodon.rxbrad.com sure does! Vultr, DO, hetzner, etc all have firewalls/security groups you can set up external to the VPS itself. I have that set up on my Vultr VPS as a fallback.

@happyborg @Naate +1 keep it with you. If at all feasible do a 3-2-1 backup of the really important stuff. Ship one, keep one with you in the car, third is on a cloud-y service temporarily (encrypted if you like).

@gregatron5@vmst.io the glib answer is to run your own Forgejo. Private/personal/small company implies that you don't particularly care about the social aspect and really just need a tightly controlled forge.

@rachel@transitory.social yessss very excited to hear how it goes and how many stitches you need. (I say this with <3 of course. One time I got so frustrated trying to get a screw out of our deck that I started stabbing at it with the removable-bit screwdriver. The bit wedged itself in, handle came loose, my hand stabbed itself on the other end of the bit. IIRC it was a three stitch situation.)

@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io to be fair it's the largest rocket ever launched with the most payload capacity and it's fully* reusable. despite the company being owned by a chud and timelines getting extended repeatedly I personally am in awe of what they've accomplished. I'm conflicted about starlink. reasonable internet speeds for a reasonable price in rural areas is a genuinely good thing. ruining the sky to do it is less good. *sometimes lol

@paco also fwiw I try my best to keep control logic self-contained and just steer it from Home Assistant, especially for things where if HA crashes at the wrong moment a pump gets stuck on and burns out or makes a mess. If you're willing to get your hands dirty with some YAML and/or some trivial C++ esphome has a pretty powerful automation system.

@paco something like this (not a recommendation, just an example): https://www.amazon.com/AITIAO-Expander-Extension-2-5-5-5V-Communication/dp/B0B82L2ZCQ/ You'd run 5V into VCC of that, SDA/SCL would come off the ESP32, and the grounds would get tied together. Then they just show up as more GPIOs in esphome: https://esphome.io/components/pcf8574/

@paco Alternatively there are some relatively inexpensive PLCs on the market that are built closer to industrial standards, although probably not outdoor rated directly: https://www.automationdirect.com/adc/shopping/catalog/programmable_controllers/click_plcs_(stackable_micro_brick)/plc_units/c0-00dd1-d

@paco@infosec.exchange Temperature and condensation are really problematic. If it were my project I would port the control logic to esphome and just keep a little ESP32 board in the outside box. Then, if you need more computational power than the ESP32 can provide, you can run it on a board in a more temperature controlled environment.

@cadey seems unlikely that you'd need to rack a physical box (unless you want to) but otherwise yeah probably :/ Stripe integration can be pretty minimal, at least. I discovered just today they have a merchant-of-record option that gives you a bunch of stuff your accountant will like.
