@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io yeah I'm all for cleaning up the atmosphere and ideally as fast as possible but it boggles the mind people prioritise it over *stopping setting it on fire*

@inthehands@hachyderm.io yeah I've seen so many ‘AI apologises for’ type headlines and …even if done on the ‘context window’ of whatever happened, it's just not. The ‘prompts’ used to get these ‘apologies’ are basically always leading questions, to which the most statically probable response is obviously ‘I'm sorry’.
Tell the echo machine say jump and it'll say jump.

@etchedpixels @ScottishGreens ‘most’?
But also it's not inconceivable that this could be crafted to consider ‘total compensation’ in some way, alternatively (or even supplementary) the ‘capital gains’ framework could be scrapped and such income included in *income* just as it used to be — may push the limits of Holyrood's power a little bit tho.
Replying to
@shoq@mastodon.social that he himself has refused to go the last 5 times, but suddenly goes now, out to raise more questions than it is
Honestly though as a non-USian that whole organisation/event has *always* seemed wildly weird to me. Like if it were a union that would make sense, but no it's basically a HR department making sure those pesky ‘journalists’ don't bother corporate too much and show appropriate fealty.
Replying to
@MisuseCase@twit.social @freya@social.highenergymagic.net @JulianOliver@mastodon.social it's an AI project, so of course it's a scam, the fun is figuring out who's scamming who exactly, and how much it's going to hurt the rest of us in the process

@ErikUden@mastodon.de idk, I certainly find it strange to treat the brain as if it's a kidney, clearly it is a special case of its own, but I also don't buy that the neuro-mush ‘is’ the person.

@kimlockhartga@beige.party @Newstrujew@autistics.life @skinnylatte@hachyderm.io when the median middle age white cis dude gets chest pain they're fairly quickly thinking heartattack.
When the rest of us get it we may not even entirely notice, we're just that used to dismissing things.
Replying to
@kimlockhartga@beige.party @Newstrujew@autistics.life @skinnylatte@hachyderm.io there's been talk in recent years of ‘heart attacks are different in women’ but when I've had ‘candid’ discussions with medication educators it seems that this somewhat isn't true, or at least is overstated.
More accurately we've just trained half the population to ignore *a heart attack* as anxiety, or acid, or period, or …, or just generally yet another ache to push through because what other option is there.
Replying to
@jackemled @Natasha_Jay nah they are ‘news about gay topics for straights’, been clear they aren't about ‘serving the community’, certainly not all of it, for some time now
Replying to
@skc@scottodon.com @nileane@nileane.fr right I mean that's your problem of course: there's really no way the premise will happen, so it's all a little moot :)
Most of society is also still apparently fine with HP, so I'm not sure how much it even needs ‘rehab'ing’.
Unless something dramatic happens HP has has such an impact I doubt it'll ever really go away, decades from now it'll probably end up something like Roald Dahl: People occasionally bring up the problems, mostly to rolled eyes.
Replying to
@be @downey @lu_leipzig it was actually put to me, not intended as serious of course, that I should just stop updating things, but honestly forking GNOME OS circa 48-or-so and only selectively updating components doesn't seem the worst idea at this point, and probably more viable than preserving fedora 42

@paco @WPalant @dangoodin I concur, and it'd hardly be unprecedented a move right?
With the track record of LLM companies, and others in this space, I'm not sure it's even a particularly cynical read — just rational.
On the plus side in 6 months the bubble may have popped…
Replying to
@WPalant @dangoodin @paco the impression people get, esp lay people, is that the all-knowing-machine found 300 ways to steal your firefox history, when in practice it's maybe a dozen really contrived ways to crash your tab.
Good to fix certainly, but not quite as impactful right?

@rancoisse@aus.social @benroyce@mastodon.social @heidilifeldman@mastodon.social well, the problem seems to be the US keeps letting off shots, proverbial or literal, so nobody else gets the chance to break a ceasefire anyway…

@dieTasse@floss.social @admin@floss.social having a rule against it doesn't mean it has to be actively enforced in that way, more that we've set a standard we expect in our community, and we can then point to that as and when necessary.
Replying to
@yacc143 @ScottishGreens maybe we just shouldn't bother trying to tax those CEOs either right?
Replying to
@bodil yeah, I mean don't get me wrong I disagree with pretty much everything Thatcher stood for, but at least she did stand for something, and quite probably believed she was ‘doing the right thing’ even as it needlessly shattered community after community for generations.
These others? It's all just greed and grift.

@ddetmer@mastodon.social @verge@mastodon.social see but the problem is it isn't a simple matter of unsavoury ‘beliefs’, JKR is trying — largely succeeding — to enforce her worldview on us all, and openly boasts of using her HP income to do so.
Perhaps if she like Dickens were dead we could view HP much as we do Roald Dahl's stories: fun books for kids, at least when lightly edited.
But she's very much alive and kicking, and making the lives of millions worse.
Replying to
@ddetmer@mastodon.social @verge@mastodon.social not to be self-centred but *my* life is actively worse because of her, I've lost rights from her direct personal actions, she's not an island, it doesn't make sense to dismiss it as simply ‘her life’.
