I just merged a nice patch by Richard Allen for @GIMP@floss.social's JPEG import plug-in. With a recent enough libjpeg-turbo (most used JPEG lib), loading 8-bit JPEG through the 12-bit pipeline brings huge quality benefits. It comes at the expense of all JPEG being loaded as 16-bit per channel, which means bigger files. Yet the qualitative difference is making this change a no-brainer. Loading as 8bpc then converting to 16bpc, you already lost data (unlike loading directly as 16bpc). #GIMP #JPEG

We released #GIMP 3.2.0 today! Quite an exhausting week with usual last-minute issues!
E.g. the CI infra suddenly failed yesterday! Fortunately admins were prompt to fix as always (still I went to bed at 1AM)!
Then issues in Windows packaging, which testers didn't notice with early test packages (of course, only noticed by someone just after the tagging! 😱).

Yet all in all, first time I end the release around 7PM after having started the release day at 9AM! The procedure gets better! 😄

🥳 Happy ㉊th birthday, @GIMP@floss.social ! 🎂

In 1995, November 21, a young US student, Peter Mattis, announces a program on some Linux newsgroups, called "The GIMP: the General Image Manipulation Program". 2 years later, Spencer Kimball (other co-author) and Peter graduate and leave.

Thanks to the #GPL license, the community take over development.

30 years later… The project is thriving, with contributors from all over the world, and maintainers from Germany, Norway, France, Korea, Netherlands… 🤗

We would love to share a scan, but it's not cool to share private messages without consent, so we won't. It is though very heart-warming! 🥰

From 1997 and onward, the software has been entirely community-led (and mostly in Europe, as we just showed). Thanks for liberating their code through a license initially, but apart from this, thinking that just because these 2 people are originated from the US, it would make the whole software US-based is just funny. 😛

We've been contributing since 2012. Mitch since 1997. His own previous co-maintainer was also German AFAWK. I think that GIMP has been mainly developed in and led from Europe for a few decades now. Just the 3 of us, we account for over 50% of the number of commits in GIMP. The main developer of GEGL/babl @pippin@mastodon.xyz? Norway. Anyone saying that GIMP is from the US is mistaken. 🤣

On a aussi plein de gens qui n'y connaissent rien au libre, et nous parle de l'entreprise "GIMP" 🤦, se demandent qui est le manager qui a laissé passer telle ou telle chose (parfois on a beau expliquer que dans une communauté, on ne marche pas ainsi, ils ont vraiment du mal à intégrer et c'est dialogue de sourds). Y a des connards partout, libriste ou non, c'est pas lié.

On n'a pas la fonctionnalité X que tout le monde attend? Ah bah on est les premiers à vouloir cela, mais c'est la vie! C'est l'ambiance que je veux créer. Et pour cela, rien de mieux que des remarques positives entre contributeurs. L'inverse des remarques passives-agressives en fait. Il ne faut jamais essayer de recréer la logique corporate en communauté.

C'est aux contributeurs d'accepter que c'est pas grave si vous allez pas aussi vite que vous espérez et surtout: "c'est OK". Un truc que je dis souvent aux contributeurs, c'est "take your time", ou "when you have some time". Faire rentrer progressivement dans l'esprit d'équipe qu'on n'est pas dans une logique business. On est dans une logique communautaire où les bénévoles donnent de leur temps.

Je veux juste protéger ma santé mentale au possible, éviter les drames, et pour cela, je considère qu'il vaut mieux une petite équipe bienveillante où on se considère même "amis" au bout d'un moment, qu'une grosse équipe basée essentiellement sur le "mérite".

@fabi1cazenave@mastodon.social @greenman@fosstodon.org Dans notre projet (comme beaucoup), on a un concept de "core team", qui ne sont pas nécessairement des développeurs (on a plus de non-développeurs que de développeurs), mais on ne laisse rentrer que des gens bienveillants. Et je suis absolument clair que nous couperons les accès à quelqu'un qui commence à se montrer malveillant envers les autres (core team ou extérieurs d'ailleurs; on ne veut pas non plus de "petits chefs" qui sont sympas uniquement avec la core team).

Déjà de mon expérience, ça se retrouve pas dans la réalité (les gens imbus d'eux-même ne sont en général pas si bons qu'ils le pensent alors que j'ai croisé beaucoup de gens très compétents mais simples). Et même si on avait un tel cas, je privilégierai toujours les gens qui savent travailler en communauté à de tels "génies connards".

Pas seulement. Certains des trolls les plus virulents que l'on a se proclament ingénieurs informatiques depuis X décennies. Justement ils se servent de cela pour nous expliquer qu'ils "savent" et qu'il est totalement "honteux" qu'un logiciel ait tel ou tel problème. Et aussi pour nous dire que c'est super facile à corriger. Y a qu'à faire ci ou ça (en terme très vague).

And unfortunately there are a lot of lobbies who have absolutely no interest in understanding it. They also have no interest in the people themselves, the digital health of the European Union, etc. Because it does not fill their pockets as much as the other way. @jubei @GIMP @EUCommission

You should clearly not take any of this contents seriously. 😅 This being said, none at Adobe ignore GIMP. They historically even had a page comparing Photoshop with GIMP on the official website and we saw sometimes Adobe employees mentioning GIMP.

J'attends de voir. Et en général, le futur me donne raison. En 14 ans sur GIMP, y a juste un gars à qui j'aurais pas dû donné des droits (mais il est parti de lui-même assez vite).

C'est une "toile de fond" *un peu* désagréable… mais en continu. Ces gens jouent avec les frontières du troll et du contributeur. Le danger advient quand on laisse passer la partie troll parce qu'on se dit "mais ils font *aussi* du bon boulot". On leur donne un peu de pouvoir, or comme on dit "quand on donne la main, ils prennent le bras…"

Le risque est quand ils s'investissent en passant leur vie sur le tracker. Car c''est là où on se dit "Devrais-je lui donner quelques droits?" Leur toxicité est moins évidente: quelques remarques borderline du type "c'est pas acceptable", des théories du complot ("les décisions sont prises en secret" quand tout est discuté en public, etc.)…

J'ignore leurs petites piques la plupart du temps, mais s'ils vont un peu loin, j´émets un warning clair. Et dans tous les cas, je leur donne pas de pouvoir au delà de l'accès public que tout le monde a déjà.

Maintenant on essaie d'avoir plus de sorties fonctionnelles, par contre on limite le nombre de changements majeurs (qui risqueraient de retarder la sortie). Je demande aux contributeurs de pas travailler sur 10 méga-projets de refonte qu'ils arriveront pas à finir à temps (et on sera obligé de tout retarder car le dépôt est dans un état instable car le travail est commencé).

Car ne jamais rien sortir publiquement est aussi un truc qui démoralise les contributeurs et donnent l'impression aux gens extérieurs qu'il ne se passe rien (lesquels sont alors virulents sur le tracker).

C'est pour ça que même si j'ai acquiescé en lisant le thread, j'ai beaucoup hésité avant cette réponse plus longue. Je veux pas paraître donneur de leçon. Donc si tu trouves que ce sont justes des trucs "plus faciles à dire qu'à faire" (sûrement vrai), ne pas hésiter à ignorer mes messages! 😛
