One of the few things I still have that was from ThinkGeek.

what does it look like to work in dysfunctional IT? How about retrocomputing or video games?
also offering up some hot takes on programming despite discovering decades ago that being a programmer is best left to others.
liberal user of CWs; trying to atone for over a decade of Twitter ruin.
The country flags above show which countries in the world I've been to.
NO LONGER yakkoj on Twitter.
Me: there's got to be a better way to clone a local git repo...
>man git-clone
>states that "--local" is a no-op and is the default if I "git clone ${HOME}/git/foo.git"
Man I need to RTFM more. I've been doing this the hard way. :oP
"Democrats are surging in Texas, South Carolina, Kansas, Florida" (all states where I've lived) sounds great to hear.
Hopefully next month it will be reality. Has the electorate woken up? And will those who stupidly DIDN'T vote last time bother exercising the only right that really gets shit done this time?
Now if only I could be confident that not-GOP isn't just GOP with a different label, like in CA...
If Next Generation were being made today, the Ferengi would have a 24th-century jingoistic version of the American truck
(aside: they got things down-pat with the Ferengi, and some wonder how they could treat the ladies in the cast poorly...)
gee... almost like programmers and other people in tech (network people, sysadmins, etc.) need a UNION!
The sucker punch for me is that this is all an INTENTIONAL human cost, and if you give a shit about anything other than techbros' payday, you're the one who's wrong.
I say this as someone who has had much LESS stolen from grifty AI, and I completely understand where this is coming from. It's called "having empathy" and "being a person"
I'm here for it. Apply it to cars. Go back to the 1957 Chevy Bel Air engine-wise, stuff a good transmission behind that, and surround it with modern structure and crumple zones. Interior, you get BUTTONS, and analog instrumentation (hopefully FULL) and the possibility for a MANUAL transmission. Go back to 1996 for engine/spark management; that's the only thing that should be computerized in the car anyway.
Send engineers to Cuba to give them ideas...
welp it's not going to be automatic (not right now, anyway), but my Blu-Ray ripping journey is off to a good start.
My reader is LibreDrive-compliant and MakeMKV works with it, so they get my money!
Oh... kinda sad when someone like the MakeMKV folks understand how basic commerce works better than most of the established outfits. They made it easy and painless to give them my money; not a thing I can say for most carts/payment systems...
Or:
"Hey you! You actually want us eating here, right? How about an actual paper menu we can look at? Remember, our willingness to buy depends on this menu!"
>Canonical allegedly will start putting "AI"into Ubuntu.
Good thing Mint and LMDE are things... better thing I called it quits with Ubuntu when snaps were shoved down my gob.
bwahahaha changing my grocery list to mostly "possible ALDI" is liberating
The spreadsheet has variations of this that are marked "ALDI":
- (costs less)
- (less waste)
- (healthier)
- (costs less AND I get more)
- (less qty) <- it fights a bad property of Costco: sometimes I can't eat ALL of a thing I buy there, so it's waste :o(
So... let me get this straight:
2022: twitter fucks up badly
2022: bluesky: HEY COME OVER HERE
2026: bluesky keeps fucking up
2026 bluesky users: "We need to stay here cause we can't go back to twitter and there are no alternatives."
So I must be typing into the void, then?
"But all my friends are on bluesky!"
orz
I wish my employer would stop giving internal employee data to third parties to run surveys
Sad that a selling point for today's laptops is "has built-in ethernet" and "has more than 2 USB ports"
Even more sad is that very few new laptops can even make these claims.
Yeah, pick up a lightly-used older laptop if you need a laptop. You get much more value.
I think my general palate is changing (for the BETTER). Not long ago, I'd not eat carrots, potatoes, or broccoli without butter, or salt, or at least some seasoning. (Broccoli/carrots, I had with ranch dressing. They pretty much cancel each other nutrition-wise)
Today, I can eat all of that with no additives, and eat it ALL. I thought I'd utterly fail at this, but I'm surprised.
Those of you who have tried to spread and practice empathy and compassion, don't think you've done no good. Other decent people are not only out there, you've successfully reached them.
This was during the development of Apple III, and the stance at Apple back then was "the Apple II can't EVER be better than our new computer designed by committee"
But Woz and crew knew better, and UCSD Pascal was the first Apple product to use the then-new 16-sector format (and, thanks to a few compromises in the Pascal file system, do it REALLY fast; DOS 3.3's RWTS came from Apple III REGRWTS, but was slowed down)
I wish it were rhetorical question, but...
Are we in USA still leaning on gofundme instead ofdemanding and getting a decent single-payer health care system?
A little more rhetorical, but fearing the answer is hellscape-compliant: are buy now pay later things like Klarna becoming (shitty) substitutes for proper health care? They seem to be everywhere else (IKEA was advertising them; you can even get FAST FOOD paid for in installments...)
I'd like to pick up something like an HP 712/60 (a PA-RISC 7000 700 series that should run HP-UX 10.20 at least)
But apparently they're asking crazy-go-nuts prices for them. This is the minimum HP-UX workstation; there are other 700 series that are much beefier.
yay, I can author weblogs in markdown now with minimal fuss.
All I need to do after running things through pandoc is strip the HTML tags from the blosxom decorations at the head (the first line is the article title, and a second "comment" line gives an icon for it. pandoc encloses this in
...
cause it looks to markdown like a paragraph)I had to massage the code block to make it align properly.
It got everything else right in my test of the basics.
Although I know it's not a Docker problem, in typical punter fashion, my punter mind is indoctrinated to BLAME Docker for this junk:
"This junk" currently being "every docker container wants to expose port 8080". When I have one that does this, it's OK, but it breaks the instant I put up a second container that exposes the same port. If I'm thinking, I can nip that in the bud by telling the compose to expose a different port.
Some install via a shell script. I want to do the compose myself.
we went from having to compile the kernel to having to compile things that are much more difficult than the kernel to compile
I've not in recent times had to compile a web browser, or had to set a cross-compile environment up
"AI" is certainly a wasteful way for HR to manufacture pretext for random firings. The computer can't be held accountable, but is entrusted with decision making.
1979 IBM weeps internally and people lose employment.
I doubted that "apt install"ing a .deb would actually work
So I tried it with this new install, and it DOES work!
Old dog, new tricks!
That GOP Senator is a bozo for opposing changes to DST laws that would at least end me having to change the clock, and then change it back 4 months later (I HATE DST, but it's for this reason -- I don't just "lose" the hour; it fucks with sleep and is hazardous to my physical and mental health). but That Jackass posting the Senator's phone number on his echo chamber? That's some bullshit.
What a fucking wanker, and an embarrassment to the world.
Kind of wishing I had something like blosxom (my weblog static site generator), but it also supports markdown source and converts that to standard HTML.
This way, I can either use HTML (as I do now), or level up to markdown for the source. Markdown has some good potential to capture my mindshare, but the lack of processing tools caps it (i.e., "my ignorance regarding markdown to HTML processors for Unix is capping it")
Looks like one more thing to get up off my duff and fix with some search.
With the general shitshow that Bluetooth is, it should be no problem identifying who the owners are, amongst many other things. Security is probably looser than a $2... slot...
fair enough; the people who made DOS work and then made Windows work, and also may have seen compatibility through win9x and XP (and from the DOS-based to NT-based Windows) are now rightfully like "WHAT THE CRAP" when Windows 11 is intentionally tripping over its doodle. They know things could be much better and are not given the opportunity to actually fix it.
As an American, I'm rooting for non-American entities (and rooting more for AMERICAN entities) to properly accomplish digital sovereignty. The reason: NO ONE needs third parties that they can't properly control mucking in their data. Not Americans, not the Euro community, NO ONE.
At this point, and this is the fault of tech companies, these corporations have proven they can't be trusted. Hire people directly that can be trusted. Deploy solutions that don't tie you back to Company X.
TIL DaringFireball guy made Markdown
I previously only knew him as an Apple cheerleader, but first, that's just my opinion, and next, it's very outdated.
He's accomplished what he wanted to with Markdown, though (at least the main thing) -- make it readable no matter what, and keep it portable. I can treat this as text and read it as text.
I see me in this post (minus the spiders... for now...)
Apparently these are becoming popular again. Aside from the nano having a bad battery, these all work (and the nano only has a bad battery; it works fine cabled up)
I have a special soft spot for the mini. That was my 2nd iPod after an older brick-sized touch wheel 1st-gen
Really surprised the touch's battery still works... The mini and the video are on their 3rd battery.
While they are bolted to Apple Inc., they still all play music without a subscription, through 3.5mm headphone jack.
