In the movies, this would be the headline on a newspaper we see our protagonist find as they pick through the wreckage of a devastating pandemic

“Our community has spent so many years building something of genuine human value: a shared body of knowledge, cultural meaning and careful critique all of which lend considerable discursive depth and richness to what we do. But in the brave new world of Knitting Bullshit, all of that accumulated wisdom, all of the real history of knitting as labour, as resistance, as solidarity, as design intelligence, as craft, is now there simply to provide the powerful emotional currency that AI-generated podcasts and videos cynically mine for profit.”

This is not just a European problem. Here in US civic tech, whenever I saw "actually good software made from the grassroots" go up against "crappy software with a bunch of well-connected people attached to it," the crappy software won every time
Fired the lawn company today that replaced their phone receptionist with AI. That wasn't the entire reason I fired them. But it wasn't not, either

"Parmigiano Reggiano is one of the world’s most tightly regulated foods. It can only be produced in a small, designated area using three ingredients — milk, salt and rennet — and it must age for at least 12 months before it can be sold. Many wheels mature for 24, 36, or even 40 months.
That long wait creates a financial bottleneck. Farmers must be paid every 30 days. Staff, feed and energy costs accumulate daily. But revenue doesn’t arrive for a year or more. For more than a century, Credem Bank has stepped in to bridge that gap — accepting cheese as collateral."

Back in the '80s and '90s, there was a category of software pejoratively referred to as "databases for dentists."
Desktop relational databases like dBase, FoxPro and Access were incredibly flexible. You could apply them to nearly any business situation by writing a little business logic and building a few forms. But understanding that required a degree of abstract thinking which most people don't have.
So for a while, you could make a lot of money by taking a general-purpose database, slapping a few forms on it that were specific to a particular type of small business, and selling it to those businesses at a huge markup.

“Yarbo sells autonomous lawn mowers and snow blowers, consumer robots priced between $1,500 and $5,000, deployed in private homes all over the world. Every one of them ships with a persistent SSH tunnel, a root password hardcoded identically across the entire fleet, and telemetry that phones home to ByteDance. None of this is disclosed at point of sale. These devices have WiFi, Halow and 4G connections.”

"A federal judge in Virginia on Friday granted a longer block against the Department of Justice implementing a 'Anti-Weaponization Fund,' saying that Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s verbal claim that the fund was not going forward was an insufficient guarantee.
Judge Leonie Brinkema gave Blanche and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent a week to submit written sworn declarations that the fund was not going forward, as Blanche recently testified to Congress."

"Since the ceasefire, Iranians have gone further, offering to stop all enrichment for five years and to readmit international inspectors to verify compliance.
This was an extraordinary concession. Trump could have accepted it and claimed that his Iran nuclear deal was better than Obama’s, which allowed Iran to enrich uranium at a level of 3.67 percent. But he rejected the offer, demanding a 20-year suspension—a term Iran was certain to reject."

@sarahtaber@mastodon.online A lot of times people like that are less interested in your opinions than they are in getting a public figure like you to bless _their_ opinions.
Some of them have a high enough regard for themselves to think that once you hear their opinions you will naturally get on board. The rest usually figure they can just throw enough money at you to endorse whatever they want. Both types are usually gobsmacked when their preferred approach does not work

"Sources indicate that Kennedy has little interest in the details of the health department’s work and little direct interaction with career staff. Kennedy misses critical, regularly scheduled meetings with agency leaders, is sometimes 'checked out' in the meetings he attends, and has been out of the loop on key decisions.
On Wednesday night, Kennedy responded to the report with an 871-word diatribe. His key argument was that much of the story could be refuted by a look at his jam-packed public calendar.
The problem with Kennedy’s argument is that he does not have a publicly available calendar."
