Opinion Haver.

Enjoys self-hosting services, photography, nature, being a movie snob, and listening to the same five songs on increasingly expensive headphones.

"Opinions are always my own, but if you don't like them that's too bad." - @ebassi@mastodon.social

My avatar is a tweaked version of my favorite Duck Game hat, "Brick", and a sunset background I did in Affinity Photo. Used to be AI-gen, but I realized that was dumb. Header is close-up of sequoia redwood bark from a trip I took a few years ago.

@henryk Thank you! The people saying "oh look how amateurish this software is" miss the point. The software shouldn't exist at all, because the policies shouldn't exist. Saying "oh well let's point out the security flaws" of the thing-that-shouldn't-exist only helps it to continue existing.

@smutmag Had a small scale version of this recently. I told someone I canceled my Apple iCloud and Apple Card because of Apple's political donations, and the person I was talking to harangued me that I haven't boycotted the other 30 companies that did something similar. Apple was the company I had a relationship with, and I ended it. I'm sorry that I can't perfectly protest everything.

Man I cannot stand that #KDE does not remember window positions. I "understand" that it's some sort of #wayland thing and I do not care at all what the excuse is. We're talking Windows 3.1 level feature here. "Hey the new display manager is in such good shape that we're not including X11 anymore oh but don't expect it to remember where your windows were!"

@ercanbrack@mastodon.online If they're developing for client apps (audio editor, music player, etc) maaaybe they have a point. If they're talking games, then I would hope that uttering the words "steam deck" would be enough to convince them

@taylorlorenz I think it would be interesting to hear about the benefits, *and* the pitfalls, of the fediverse in general and Mastodon in particular.

@daniel_bohrer@chaos.social … Isn’t true. I’ve been in IT for 26 years and none of that was “common knowledge” 20 years ago. That’s solidly in the golden age of Windows XP. Working in small business this whole time, and only programmers and admins knew that stuff.

@CmykStudent If it could work the way some apps like Firefox do that would be cool. Firefox has some setting (or env var, I forget) that says "please use the XDG portal" so on KDE desktops I get the KDE file chooser.

@daniel_bohrer@chaos.social I’m still reading but “Ask a twenty-two-year-old to connect to a remote server via SSH. Ask them to explain what DNS is at a conceptual level. Ask them to tell you the difference between their router’s public IP and the local IP of their laptop. Ask them to open a terminal and list the contents of a directory. These are not advanced topics. Twenty years ago these were things you learned in the first week of any serious engagement with computers.” …

@vtrlx@mastodon.social The argument that "people used it because it was in X and now X is deprecated" is silly. The engine behind the feature does not matter. What matters is if you are breaking people's workflows? I use middle-click-paste often as a longtime Linux user. I don't want gnome to change it because gnome seems to exert an outsized pull on Linux UI trends, and I'm worried that more DE's would disable it.

@sue@glasgow.social I think that's a good point, esp about nostalgia. I think some of what the small web people are longing for is personalization/personality. Some people had really wild, creative GeoCities or AngelFire or whatever pages. Now people go to a site like facebook and everyone's page are basically identical. The "small web" isn't going to sweep away facebook, regardless of how altruistic or not-for-profit it is, because most people a) don't care and b) don't know how to do their own site.

@vtrlx@mastodon.social From the article: "[users] who want part of their precious screen space dedicated to Discord showing an essentially permanent red “unread messages” badge because who can even stay on top of all of their Discord messages when it’s a ceaselessly noisy IM app constantly demanding your attention and yet I’m supposed to believe that software which makes it harder for unscrupulous techbros to monopolize your attention is itself somehow an affront unto the very concept of software freedom..."

Replying to
@vtrlx@mastodon.social Welp, just got to the conclusion and the typical gnome "software maintenance is hard, YOU do it". This is the attitude that removes features every time a toolkit gets changed (GTK2->3->4). Other projects maintain features during transitions (Qt4->5->6) because not breaking people's expectations is part of software development. Here's a related question: when does hatred of Microsoft peak? Answer: whenever they break workflows. Ex: Office ribbon, Windows 8, Windows 11.
