"Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has expressed concern about new talent coming to the firm for the money rather than the mission" So annoying when your employees care more about money than the mission of *checks notes* rendering employees obsolete lol fucking hell https://www.axios.com/2026/08/03/ai-talent-wars-openai-google-meta-anthropic

Feeling pretty fucking smug about my predictions so far, turns out knowing something about coding pedagogy actually helps you understand how skills work in industry eh.

Absolutely wild to see this and the reactions to it, we must be entering the stage where everyone pretends they never thought it would speed things up in the first place https://mastodon.social/@nixCraft/116724214815495661

My favourite part of this fictional subgenre is where we talk about jobs as though companies create them all rationally and that kind of thing, it's all part of a well oiled machine where the exact right number of people are employed to deliver the business objectives efficiently etc etc

It's my last day as an employee at a tech company, what should I do next week with all the time I'd normally spend authenticating with apps?

The wave of CEOs claiming AI as the reason for layoffs right as the ringleaders of this shite walk that rhetoric back in unison would be funny if not for the devastation

There is some compulsion in software where automation breeds more automation and we accidentally leap over the phase where it was actually optimal for both usefulness and understanding.

I suspect they believed so profoundly in its capacity to replace people they thought that would be case closed before the pricing rug pull had to happen. They were incorrect!

I've posted about this before but messaging from the scottish greens was the first time I saw climate justice, social justice, and racial justice reflected as hand in hand with one another in rhetoric from an actual political party Climate crisis and colonialism are the same story

I guess we'll see what the long term damage to wages etc is going to be, people are still obvs going to be fucked by the massive investment in this. But at least we should be able to wrestle back some leverage and agency.

So weird how when you leave a remote job you don't leave the building for a last time, it all happens on devices, and they're in your home.. Having done it many times the old fashioned way and this way it's never not strange

Generalisations about people in roles you regard as non technical are typical of the kind of toxic engineering culture I've railed against, so take any comments I make that you happen to find reassuring in that context lol.

With the claude wiped my production database story, I see a lot of discussion about the attribution of blame. I do believe that accountability is going to have a significant impact on how this ai stuff plays out, however in this case I find it more interesting to consider whether the developer made more reckless decisions in part because of the way using llms shifts your understanding or attitude towards the implementation.

The wilful ignorance to think this would be enough time to make that case even if it were possibly true is wild tbh, it takes many years to introduce such a profound change. Separate from the fact that it was based on a misunderstanding of what software engineering is..

In any case whatever happens in an organisation is the result of dynamics created by senior leadership decisions as well as broader economic conditions. Pointing fingers at individuals who happen to be visible to you seems to feel good to many of you, I don't relate to that.

Find the technologies that are critical to organisations with budgets to spend on labour and that are underrepresented in training, has always been good advice and is better than ever, because it now includes basically all programming languages lolol

That's me blogged again. This time last year I was trying to build paths for folk migrating their websites away from Glitch..

Thinking about it is helping me get a handle on the role friction and its removal play in enabling people with automations for making software.

Headsup that I'm not a fan of derogatory or paranoid generalisations about product managers and the like. I point out that it's a product manager here because it speaks to what's going on with engineering oversight regarding commits to a codebase.

There's always been a tension between the shiny technologies devs were pushed to learn and those the world actually runs on, LLMs bring that into clearer focus

For real though, regardless of what's actually happened in this case which might just be a fuck up, the ludicrous predictions about this stuff will have been taken super seriously inside the companies selling it and they will likely have had marketing plans cued up that they've now had to revise, because no one is buying it anymore Now they need to pivot to a more realistic view of the utility, but that's hard to do gracefully

This post has also made me want to write about the delusion we pushed that startups making their products available for free using VC money were somehow working for the developer community.. The rise and fall of devrel, I am not sure I want to share my almost certainly unpopular opinions on all of that yet lol

Commit was made by a product manager and no one checked it was behaving correctly..? The product manager has admitted it's not doing what it should but it hasn't been reverted, we've just to wait for the next version..? I smell a rat lol.

@RobeeShepherd Totally, something I always find helps folk who communicate about tech is learning to convey it in terms of value which sales people are really good at.. Developer facing people tend to just talk about the tech for it's own sake you know?
