People don't realize that water, squishy as it is under normal circumstances, is like concrete at those velocities. (A lesson beginning surfers have to learn on the regular.) (Patrick Swayze, notably macho risk-taker, when learning to surf for Point Break, commented that the ocean will quite happily just stomp you flat if you don't pay careful attention to what you're doing.) (I once was forcibly impressed by the kinetic energy carried by a mere 4ft wave.)

Okay, sorry, but this is still apparently not widely known: this is standard #ADHD quasi-teleportation. ADHDers are incompletely evolved teleports. Seeking an item generates an energy field that pushes the item out of this time-space dimension into the next one over. It remains there until the seeker stops looking, at which point the item will finally pop back into this dimension.

Quoting
I just found my car keys that had been missing for ten days.
In my bag.
Where I usually keep them.
That I checked 3 times
and my wife checked twice.
And I still don’t know why I walked into the kitchen.
Someone hand me my metamucil.

I've noticed this pattern, too. Something about "learning how to think about thinking...."
Which is hilarious, because Philosophy has a reputation for being one of those quintessentially "useless" degrees.

I've given up trying to use Outlook search, because not only does it force unwanted sorting, but searches •everything• (Outlook, Teams, Sharepoint, & any other MS product your account is cursed with) & dumps it all into an agglomerated undifferentiated heap in the search results.
It's really fucking sad (& frankly enraging) when just scrolling your folder(s) is the •least• innefficient way to look for a particular item....

This is an impressive interview. I think this is the first time I've seen someone ask questions that has caused @pluralistic@mamot.fr to have to actually slow down & think carefully about the answers. (& the answers ae kind of chilling.)

We'd probably be much better at managing addictive patterns if they didn't also tend to be so damn profitable.

I will quite unresearvedly gloat at the misery incurred by the decision-makers who put these systems in place, & by the managers who drank the cool-aid & bought in.
For the users—? A weary sigh. This is not our first rodeo, although it does look like they've speed-run the enshittification cycle. It's probably a spiritual demerit to point out that if they'd thought about it, like, •at all•, they might have seen this coming? >>

...Holy, and not to put too fine a point on it, Moly. 👀
So I guess the upshot is that it's still murder, even if it's consensual.
Um. Good to know. 👀
I mean, I feel like I shouldn't be surprised because humans. And also: The Internet.
But...yeah.
That's a thing I know about now. 👀
Well, for what it's worth, I'm glad you were able to exercise choice, in this circumstance.

I'm a certified Old, & I get along just fine (mostly) with a simple flip phone. I do like having one on me, with a few numbers loaded for back-up.
But, yeah, compulsively giving kids phones "because safety" seems...less than well thought out.

Nope, everything's there. I just need to get an extension cord (bc I don't want to crawl under the shelves to get to the outlet I'm going to use for the charger(s), and a couple of those plug-in timers you found for me.
And some other unrelated stuff. And whatever else impulse dictates. (Note the use of the word "excuse" 😁)

Okay, so totally not the point, but I have so many questions....
There was more than one cannibal? Were they, like, asking for •volunteers•...? (In which case, go them, for honoring consent?) Or, uh, maybe recommendations? Taking requests? (This seems like this could be a, um, fascinating variation of the assassin trade...?)

There are certain grim advantages to having grown up in an alcoholic family, not least being a deep suspicion of any new fads that everyone is getting excited about.
I'm probably the latest of late adopters—just this side of being downright Amish—& this has saved me grief more times than I can count.
It also leaves me on the sidelines, watching the Sturm & Drang with a certain amount of, shall we say, bemusement.

It should be noted, however, that you should include at least one flaw or error, just so the gods don't strike you down for hubris.
(That was my dad's excuse for any imperfections, anyway 😉)

My apologies! I'd hoped the strategic use of the word "excuse" (I •like• going to the hardware store. It's a bit of a vice, in point of fact.) would be sufficient clue, but apparently not. Sorry!
But and also: I'm very impressed with the packing. Extremely thoroughly thought out, very straightforward & sensible (& not for nothing: entirely recyclable)! And clearly designed, produced, & shipped by an Actual Human. Very well done!

I will point out that that the theory does specify •time•-space continuum trans-dislocation, so I submit that these two theses are not necessarily in dispute.
Or the Matrix could simply be glitching. That happens, too.

My fucking •vet• dashed in the back to grab a mask the minute I walked in the front door. The rest of the staff followed suit without asking & without my ever saying a word.
My primary care provider, every damn year, ten minutes into the appointment, "Would you like me to put on a mask?"
I'm thinking, for my upcoming visit, to just sit there and give her a withering glare and let her draw her own conclusions.

I suspect any culture that is remotely theist may have some variant. But also, it's probably pretty universally Old People Speak for, "Don't sweat it so much, you'll wear yourself out."
