Mark Whybird

@whybird@aus.social
mastodon 4.7.2
  • Open on aus.social

My general interests: #Puns, #SciFi, computery stuff and occasional political things that amuse or appall me. Also, I like #trees and #dogs (well, all animals really.)

While I appreciate shared interests, I deeply love the very fact that many other people are NOT like me; diversity is not merely to be tolerated, but CELEBRATED as a goal in its own right.

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange @PinkNigel@toot.community @fesshole@mastodon.social When you think about it, the fact that language acquisition works at all is astounding - but it can be amusing when it doesn’t. 20-ish years ago my daughter sometimes did and sometimes did not want me to cut the crusts off the sandwiches that I would make daily for her to eat at school, so of course I would ask (a) what kind she wanted, and (b) if she wanted the crusts cut off. There was a build up over a couple of weeks at one point of something awry though… I’d ask in the morning “do you want the crust off?”, and she would say no, so I wouldn’t. Then, in the afternoon she would ask why I didn’t cut them off. Of course, at first I just thought I had maybe misheard. And then I took careful note and thought she had perhaps misremembered? Toward the end, I was saying “so let’s be clear: do you or don’t you want the crust off?”, and she would say clearly “No! I definitely DON’T want the crust off”, with witnesses… and still she would complain that I hadn’t cut them off!!! Then it hit me one night. The next morning I asked her: “what do you call this outside part of the bread?” “The crustoff!” she confidently replied.

@proedie@mastodon.green @dgar@aus.social @oheso@ieji.de You’ll laugh at this Dgar: one time back in the pre-internet times, we were living in Townsville. My dad ordered something from a small Sydney based company that was advertised as including delivery to us in Qld. All this was handled over some days by leaving messages on answering machines: The seller balked at the shipping cost, but he thought he had a solution: he was going to be flying up to Brisbane the following week; maybe we could just pop down to Brisbane and meet him! He’d be happy to give, say a $20 discount… No? What about $40? He just couldn’t understand why dad wasn’t taking this generous deal (80s money, remember!) He thought dad was exaggerating when he pointed out the seller was closer to Brisbane than us. The last message we left simply suggested he look up the 3 places in a map. Suddenly he agreed to honour he original deal of shipping it.

@oheso@ieji.de @proedie@mastodon.green @dgar@aus.social Australian here*: I can report that it did take me a moment to make the “sh” into a “s” too, but having now ‘got it’ I’m having trouble imagining how any other accent I know would make it any more of a stretch than it is for Dgar and I?

  • (indeed, by Australian standards we are practically neighbours, living within about the same 1/5th of the same state as each other, merely around 4 hours’ drive apart.)

@guyjantic@infosec.exchange @PinkNigel@toot.community @fesshole@mastodon.social About the saying, whatever its origin: similarly, “The past is a foreign country”; and we are all immigrants to the present. Any given culture even in the exact same place is different to what it was 50 or 20 or even 10 years ago. This is why (us) older people can seem out of touch: we literally grew up in a different culture.

I wonder if you can help me understand what’s going on with the coast of PNG near Port Moresby not seeming to have a “view” of Australia in the static map?

@Frenchtoastpeasant@mastodon.social @User47@vmst.io @mlanger@mastodon.world @infobeautiful@vis.social It is, of course, opinionated on which country you are crossing the ocean FROM - eg is Columbia across the ocean from Panama, or is Panama across the ocean from Columbia? The answer is of course “both”; the chart chooses one semi-arbitrarily to put in the relevant bit of ocean.

@mjj@mstdn.dk @anon_opin@mastodon.social It would make an interesting legal case study, actually. Consumer has purchased software. Auto updates are on. Company switches to subscription model, and an auto-update happens that makes that the only option going forward. (Maybe downgrading back to the previous, non-subscription version is not feasible for whatever reason.) Sure seems like the company owes the consumer something there!
