He got an award?!? Is it uncharitable to think it might be the sort of award one gets spam emails about? Yes, it is uncharitable. Would be interesting to look at the award details. "I was busy" lol. And "I stayed overseas because I had been threatened". #ICACRadio

Anita was providing fresh ideas, according to Greenwood's earlier evidence. Dwyer is saying that is unlikely to have been the case, as the matters she was involved with had been ongoing for many years. Again, making the case that Anita has not provided value. #ICACRadio

@pmcneil@aus.social I'm, not that close to Dutch politics, but I suspect that the reason other countries can plan and execute this sort of thing and we cannot is chiefly that their public services are not politicised, but ours are. For at least thirty years, but the seeds were sown earlier, successive Governments have been working on making the Australian Public Service into the supine and politically compliant structure it is today. Removing tenure, overtly political appointments and so on. It trashes any ability for the APS to work on anything at all independently of the politics of the day. In this we are very like the UK government and the US government. The UK public service is no longer anything like how it was when "Yes Minister" lampooned it decades ago.

@alice@lgbtqia.space There is a tendency for bot writers to see their bots as having all the rights and privileges (ethically) as a person. They don't. Also, if doing what a bot does would be creepy or unacceptable if a human user did it, then what the bot is doing is creepy and unacceptable. There's also a question of scale and frequency. If a human sat glued to Mastodon 24/7, instaboosting everything I did but otherwise never interacting or engaging, I would regard that as weird and want them to stop.

@huwr@aus.social @decryption@aus.social I hate being asked (or passively bullied) into moving on by someone waiting for a free table. I'm not someone who naturally dallies; when I'm finished, I'll go. That said, if pushed I will generally find there's time for another round of coffee, or an extremely leisurely glass of water. The whole point of cafes is to have a relaxed cuppa, and someone who would take that away from me gets to stew in their own impatience. The absolute cherry on top is if they get another table! Then I can immediately finish up, stand up, and leave. Bliss. Is that petty? Yes. Yes, it is.

Fuel for the outrage machine.

Bega Valley Shire Council just chucked the Merimbula Muslim community out of their premises. They paid their rent, they held gatherings, plenty of which involved non-Muslims, and they prayed five times a day. It was completely inoffensive and brought together people of all faiths and none; basically a community centre with twenty minutes of prayer a day. The Council won't say *why* they chucked them out beyond saying they've deemed it a place of worship. The State government is saying "no comment".

The power they used to kick out these people is very recent, and a direct line can be drawn from the Bondi shooting to those powers to this absolute dick move. One wonders what would have happened if it had been Jewish people, or Christian people, who had set up such a community centre. For fuck's sake, they say five minutes of prayers every day at every RSL in the country, do they have zoning permission for that?

Community centre closed after being deemed 'place of worship'

Muslim residents in Merimbula, NSW, say they feel isolated after a council decision to close a community centre that it classified as a place of worship.

@en3py@onlyarts.social @aj@gts.sadauskas.id.au It's not a lexical dilemma at all. "Not respond" is neutral; "refuse to respond" is not neutral and implies two extra pieces of information that as far as I can tell we do not have: That the request was received and that a decision was made to ignore it. Neither of those can be inferred from the information at hand. Journalists should be careful with such things, and so should we. If we are to be better than the liars and the trolls, then we have to be accurate and truthful. There is also a slight ambiguity here: "respond" could mean respond to the request, i.e., communicate with the Coast Guard, or it could mean "respond to the need", i.e., go help the other vessel. I don't think it makes any difference to this discussion though. Interesting article on maritime law; thanks!

Utterly humorless pedantic reaction
@davep@infosec.exchange That joke could be made gender-free by replacing "girl's name" with "dumb name". This would make both the putative teller less sexist (because they don't regard a girl's name as amusing for a man), and also make "Terry" less sexist (because not reacting violently to the suggestion that his name is a girls name). It also makes the diss explicit, while in no way detracting from the punchline. Finally, it allows the use of any name in the joke, including perhaps genuinely amusing names. Like Bob.

@cford@toot.thoughtworks.com @matt@toot.cafe Lets try to compare apples with apples, hm? It's not "lives saved" by cars vs "dogs run over"; it's "lives saved" by cars vs "lives lost and destroyed". The number of people injured and killed by cars each years hugely outnumbers the people saved by them. As in, literally millions to one. About 1.2 million killed - EACH YEAR. The number of injuries is 20 to 40 times higher (reference: WHO statistics). It's true that most things have good and bad uses, though it's VERY hard to argue that about guns, unless you think that people's ability to engage in a fun sport outweighs the desperate cost in human lives that guns bring - and that's just civilian gun use. For generative AI, BILLIONS have been poured into them. One thousandth of the amount so far spent could have probably have solved a pretty large chunk of the world's accessibility problems. As someone else has commented, using generative AI to find accessibility solutions is to use the most fantastically damaging, expensive and inefficient tool imaginable. That some solutions pop out is a good thing, but it is at extraordinary cost to everybody, including those helped. The solutions are founded on wholesale intellectual theft and channel vast amounts of money into the pockets of the worst people on Earth. In other words, that theft is also from people with disabilities, that cost is also paid by people with disabilities. So yeah - it's easy for me, as a person without a disability, to say that this is utterly fucked. But it's utterly fucked.

Piracy - sorry sharing - solves some of the problem, the parts where stuff is too expensive and all the cash goes to exploiters. It doesn't solve the other part of the problem, where creators get nothing for their efforts. Except joy, I guess, but you can't eat joy.

Or "darl", "darling", "dear", "sweetheart" or whatever other ridiculous infantilising word springs into their tiny minds. And then they have the fucking gall to get offended when I say very politely that I dislike being called that, so please don't. It seems to be much more women than men that do it here in Oz, and I just know that if I called *them* those things they would perceive it as sexist bullshit.

@adamsteer@mapstodon.space @en3py@onlyarts.social @aj@gts.sadauskas.id.au No, "not responding" IS NOT the same as "refusing" or "declining" to respond, for the reasons I gave and will not repeat. Saying it's so without offering any counterargument does not make it so. While the situation being discussed is "maritime", this has nothing to do with maritime obligations. It could just as well be an SMSed request to pick someone up at the bus stop. Unless the Meta vessel did in fact receive the Coast Guard request (which according to the article they say they did not) and then chose to ignore said request (a moot point if they never got it), there is no justification for using loaded terms like "refused" and "declined". ... however much we may want this to be further evidence of Zuckerberg's lack of character or whatever. Bias is bias. If people want to say "They're lying! They did get the request!" then that's a different discussion.

@monkeyninja@10base2.dev Someone already mentioned that commercial displays are often heavier and thicker. Some, however, go the other way and are very, very, *very* thin and light, designed for video walls and similar, and that can also be a problem. Also, commercial displays sometimes come with extra embedded hardware - basically a small computer - that is designed to talk to some particular provider's digital display software. It's not Internet-connected, as such, but it is extra weight, extra power, extra heat, even if you re not using it. So avoid getting models with those (unless you can use them of course). And some commercial displays are basically huge Android tablets. Avoid those, too...

@aj@gts.sadauskas.id.au "not responding" is not the same as "refusing" or "declining". If you are going to summarise a story to add your own take, at least don't do it with straw men. I've no time for Zuckerberg or Meta or people with multi-million-dollar yachts generally, but accuracy in reporting and quoting of reports is important, and this is the umpteenth post that says the yacht "refused" or "declined" to help. It did neither. It just did not respond. Which may be just as bad in effect, but also could have reasons.
