Vernissage
Vernissage is an independent, open-source, photography-first platform built for people who care about photos - not ads, algorithms, or faceless corporation. Powered by ActivityPub, it connects with Mastodon, Pixelfed, and the wider Fediverse. Built with passion by the community and sustained by patron support, Vernissage stays free, open, and focused on photographers.

A quick reminder that most of the features implemented in 2026 have been tracked on the project’s roadmap: https://github.com/orgs/VernissageApp/projects/5
A lot has already been completed! 🎉
I’d love to finish the year by adding:
- A dedicated page for text-based mentions and direct messages
- Collections with Fediverse synchronization
- C2PA support (hopefully with NLnet funding, so I can implement it the way I envision)
Fingers crossed! 🤞
I’ve noticed that many users with accounts on vernissage.photos report AI-generated images to me that were posted from other instances (such as Mastodon, Pixelfed, etc.). However, those instances may have different rules and may allow such content.
I can only take action when an account on vernissage.photos itself is violating our rules. Content originating from other instances is governed by the policies of those instances, not ours. 😉
A new version of #Vernissage for iOS is now available on the App Store! 🎉
The main addition is support for push notifications, which can be enabled manually from the Notifications screen.
With this release, all major Vernissage features are now available in the native iOS app. I’m incredibly happy to reach this milestone! 😊
If you use the app and enjoy it, please don’t forget to leave a rating and review on the App Store. ❤️

Today we released #Vernissage 1.37.0 🎉
You can now follow hashtags: photos marked with followed tags will appear in your private timeline. Status details also show common hashtags and clearly highlight tags you follow.
The iOS app with hashtag-following support has been submitted to Apple for review and should be available soon.
This release also includes notification improvements, minor fixes, documentation updates, and other refinements.
Thank you for your support! 😊
After weeks of development and testing, Vernissage for iOS is now available to everyone. It’s free, with no in-app purchases, no tracking, and no privacy-invasive mechanisms.
Thank you to everyone who shared valuable feedback during testing. Notification improvements and push notifications are still on the roadmap.
The source code is open on GitHub: github.com/VernissageApp/VernissageMobile. Please rate the app on the App Store and leave a review: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/vernissage-photos/id6759335335
#Vernissage 1.35.0 is out! 🎉
This release brings a mix of new features, compatibility improvements, and important fixes:
- EXIF metadata support (FEP-ee3a)
- Account migration to and from #Vernissage
- OAuth redirect/state handling improvements
- Important ActivityPub security improvements
- Smaller bug fixes and polish
As always, thank you so much for your support, feedback, testing, and help with making #Vernissage better. 💛
I recently saw a discussion here about hashtags, which inspired me to make a few improvements to #Vernissage. I refined the helper text and added autocomplete suggestions for both hashtags and users as you type. Importantly, hashtags that follow readability and accessibility best practices are now prioritized - making them more likely to be selected by users.
🎉 New #Vernissage (1.33.0) version is available.
Changes:
- Block users (by user or instance)
- Support for WebP files
- Multiple images selection at once
- Status layout improvements
- More paramters for database connections
- Federation improvements (GoToSocial and others)
- Fix comment images layout issue
- Fix location on edit status screen
Thank you to everyone who shared feedback, reported issues on GitHub, and joined the discussions. Your input continues to help improve Vernissage.
Vernissage 1.32.0 is here! ✨
This update brings better mobile uploads, improved keyboard accessibility, SSR fixes, images in the comments panel, better muted users handling, and improved compatibility with remote profiles/services across the fediverse.

Thank you for all your help and support! 💙
Please note an important detail about Vernissage for iOS: it is a dedicated client that connects ONLY to #Vernissage instances (while communication between servers is handled via ActivityPub).
It does not support Mastodon, Pixelfed, or other services. Vernissage uses a different, in some areas more extensive, API. Unfortunately, many Fediverse apps imitate Mastodon by exposing the same API, which can lead users to believe that this is how the Fediverse works by default. 😉
New #Vernissage 1.34.0 is out! 🚀
This release focuses on safety, federation, and usability. We’ve improved blocking (including comments), added report federation via ActivityPub Flag, and introduced a mechanism to suspend communication with unreliable servers. There are also expanded AI settings (including support for local models) and autocomplete for hashtags and users.
Plus many smaller fixes and improvements across the app.
Thank you for your support - it truly means everything.
I’ve recently received a few requests to change the layout on the status page with a photo. I had a little time today to take a look at it, and I think you’ll like the final result (see the screenshots). The photo now takes up much more space on the screen - as it should.
And the best part: you can check it out yourselves, because it’s already live on vernissage.photos.
Work on #Vernissage for iOS is still ongoing. All planned features have already been implemented. What remains are testing, refinements, and polishing to deliver the best possible app for sharing your photography. The latest build introduces a contextual menu on timelines, adapting to single or multiple photos while previewing the beginning of the status text. 😊
Friday the 13th, a long walk with a camera (because priorities 📷), and yet… a new #Vernissage release just dropped.
Highlights:
- Better EXIF parsing (dates, Canon tags) - thanks @geobomatic@piaille.fr
- Captcha can now protect all registration types
- Disabled actions on old status versions (previous versions)
- Fixed automatic user approval (for approval registration flow)
- OAuth now supports urn:ietf:wg:oauth:2.0:oob
Also: a fresh #Vernissage for iOS just dropped today. Thanks for all the support! 🙌
The March financial report for vernissage.photos is now available.
Thank you to all existing Patrons - your support keeps #Vernissage alive. There is no corporation, no sponsor, no ads, and no algorithms behind it - only community support.
If you use Vernissage, please consider becoming a Patron. That is the only way this independent platform can keep running.
Also: a little surprise is coming on Easter Monday. 🌿
Unfortunately, #Vernissage was not selected for NLnet funding. It is disappointing, but I understand how competitive these calls are. As a fully independent project sustained entirely through community support, #Vernissage relies on patron support to cover its ongoing infrastructure and resource costs. That support now matters more than ever for the project’s future. ❤️

Today marks exactly two weeks since #Vernisaage for iOS testing began for Patrons. You’ve opened the app almost two thousand times and reported around 30 bugs or improvement ideas - huge thanks for that. And most importantly: there hasn’t been a single (recorded) crash - woohoo! Thank you so much.
Patrons, what do you think of the app so far? I’d really love to hear your thoughts on the UX, performance, and anything else you’ve noticed.
I’ve published the April financial report for vernissage.photos. Thank you very much to all current patrons - your support is truly essential. 💚
Many new people joined the platform this month, which is wonderful to see, but only very few have become patrons so far. Vernissage can continue to run only thanks to your contributions. Please consider supporting the project. 😊
The financial report for running vernissage.photos in February 2026 is ready.
This project is possible only because of your support. If you enjoy using the platform, please consider supporting me.
To my current patrons, thank you very much! ❤️
More improvements have been added to #Vernissage for iOS. The server selection screen has been updated, and a new screen has been introduced that allows users to create an account on a selected server directly within the app. This means new users no longer need to open a website to start using the application.
And one more small surprise - below you’ll find a link to the TestFlight build (the number of slots is limited). I’ll appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
