@yetiinabox That's a lovely story, and I'd like to add a similar impactful event for me. My parents owned a small factory in the Finch/Dufferin area of Toronto - and when I was almost out of high school in the late 70s there was a HUGE Knob Hill Farms grocery store that opened. That neighborhood had lots of immigrants (we emigrated to Canada in the early 60s) and every few weeks you would see people breaking down crying in the fresh food section. Ok day I asked if they were ok and a family member said - they are fine. This is my uncle from Poland, and they have never seen so MUCH food. So yeah - be kind - it's the very least we can do. If you think life is hard here it's still pretty good most of the time. It's all relative.

@bakuninboys@aus.social @killyourfm@layer8.space My partner and I spent 30 dollars each to see a local band called Higher Funktion on our local music space #Heartwoodhall. Imagine - a nine piece funk band with sax, trombone, trumpet, two guitars, vocalist, bass, drums, and keyboard putting out amazing grooves for our listening pleasure. Imaging how many anonymous plays they would have to get on Spotify to get 30 dollars. Instead they funkified 150 or so white haired white people who absolutely LOVED the show. Support your local musicians!

@dazfuller@mstdn.social It should have just been a link to the (awful) Gitflow image everyone uses. Instead it's a clear demonstration of Microsoft eating its own AI dogfood, and finding out that it's rotten, and they don't have the common sense to sniff it before eating it. They have really lost the thread ...

@dazfuller@mstdn.social This is just GitFlow reinterpreted by AI and it's honestly pretty much why developers sometimes hate git :-) Move to Trunk Based Development (with a coach if you need it) and look back on this model and laugh like a maniac.

@thegardendude I found one of these moths on the ground in the park on the way home one day about 20 years ago. Brought it home to show the kids and as it was very weak I had it in an open plastic container. Came back to find it had laid little black spots - eggs! The eggs hatched, we fed them with water and willow leaves, and eventually only one caterpillar survived. It grew to a bit fat unit about the size of my ... finger :-) complete with multicolored balls on the ends of stalks, it was terrifying and beautiful and ate a LOT. Eventually it spun a cocoon, and I put the branch with the cocoon in a brandy snifter and forgot about it. I came into my home office in early spring and there was an awful stench. It took me a while but eventually I figured out the smell was some stuff that had oozed out of the cocoon! The kids and I got to watch a beautiful cecropia moth emerge from the cocoon - and as it was still too wintery to release it, and we found out they don't eat anyways, we euthanized it :-(

@pekkatahkola It's -30 here in Ontario around Huntsville. You often don't need special tires for this is kind of snow because the snow packs down but it can be displaced by the tire knobs. The danger is in cold humid climates that hover around 0C (looking at you Jutland in DK) where the water on the bike paths freezes at night. In Vejle DK they would send a sander or salter around the bike paths in the city around 4:00 or 5:00 so the commuters had a fighting chance against the ice.

@malcircuit@thingy.social I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling to find relevance. If it's any consolation, I'm a regular old white guy with kids and grandkids and on the cusp of retirement because I have very few fu+$s to give anymore. Some days I just look busy, and that's so anti-me that it makes me even more anxious about being irrelevant.

So I'm also volunteering at a repair cafe, and I think you are doing some cool astrophotography? Is there a venue where you can share your work like a local library?

You are doing things that SOMEONE out there will find relevant and interesting - the challenge is finding that community in real life.

It's hard, but take it one day at a time. You can do it.

@CiaraNi@mastodon.green I don't always read the alt text (obviously). I recall one winter in DK, maybe 2021 where the Vejle harbor turned to ice. It's -25 C in the morning here in Ontario and we spent the weekend cross country skiing in -15 C because it does.warm up by midday :-)

@Atc1441@mastodon.social 400 MHz ARM A9 ? WTF is going on at Krups and how did they manage to sell building an appliance with no less than 4 sources of single point of supply chain failure? Oh, right - we only need to produce this UNTIL there is a supply chain failure. But still, that BOM could be shaved quite a bit and still have the same functionality.

@oalders@fosstodon.org @rjbs@social.semiotic.systems +1 for Fastmail as a first class operation - I have been a customer for almost 15 years with absolutely zero issues. The more I deal with (insert language) package managers and the apparent willingness of package authors to break stuff - the more I want to go back to the basic hand-tools for computers. sed, awk, grep, ... not sure about going back to Perl but if it works and your team has it in their muscle memory then go and be awesome!

@ianburnette@toot.community @bakuninboys@aus.social @killyourfm@layer8.space You see the same thing in Western Canada and in some of the southern US. It's a mindless escape, and the games are set up to take a long time rewarding wins and a short time to start the next hand after a loss. Governments like it because they can use some of the funds to finance public goods, but it's a false economy - the long term cost of gambling addiction is higher than any short term benefit. Keep supporting local music!

@ottaross@mastodon.social @srgower@ottawa.place Can you blame him?

Campaigning on campaign reform and then gaining majority in the House of Commons with less than a majority of the vote (39.5%).

Why change a system that lets you win like that?

There are a few things that can be done:

  1. Ban campaign ads (or any political ads) unless an election has been called.
  2. Ban corporate donors to campaigns and limit individual contributions
  3. Then figure out ballot reform

@stoneymonster@stoney.monster HaHaHa - I love how they call asking the car dealership chatbot to write a Python script a "silly trick" - but I'll bet they have a sales team trying to convince businesses that the chatbot can write code. This kind of AI is nothing but a massively scaled Dunning Kruger effect, and if you think it's actually figuring out the answer to your question ... I think we are on the same page here, yes?

@alvaro I don't know for sure, but I doubt this was a cost saving measure - the more likely explanation is that the circuit worked with the cable they supply with the device, and there are so many corner cases and cable combinations and complexity to the USB standard that it's a simple design error. I assume you have let them know it's an issue?

@Routhinator@tenforward.social How close are you to retirement and do you have dependents? Sometimes you need to get noise cancelling headphones, hold your nose, and just get stuff done. If you are younger then start putting out feelers and be careful that your next step is to solid ground I've done some experiments with AI and I'm often surprised at how good the guesses are, and then not surprised when it totally messes up. I'll use my own brain, thanks very much. I'll write this code using BDD/TDD and I'll write the docs using Sphinx and PlantUML and I'll be able to tell you with confidence that MY stuff works. Oh, and take up woodworking or carpentry or plumbing or electrical trades.

@denisedwheeler.bsky.social I am no longer astonished that 40 million is just 4% of a billion. Jeff Bezos has a net worth of about 250 Billion - so 40 million is about 0.016% of his net worth. If you earn 100k per year, that's the equivalent of about 16 dollars, or a couple of Starbucks coffees If that 40 million came out of Bezos' own pocket, it's basically discretionary spending ... so it doesn't matter if the movie stinks. Its an oh-well for him.

@LibertyOverGov It's a fine example of the name of a piece of legislation that is completely opposite to its intent. Of course the Pritzger family has generational wealth and may not depend on external wealth. But with that independent wealth comes the ability to say things that matter. I'm not sure why but I believe Pritzger when he speaks truth to power - Newsome, not so much.
