This recent article by @bramus@front-end.social announces a new web component, that is built on top of two superb exciting modern APIs.

• CSS Custom Highlight API
• OpaqueRange API

These two will change the way we build for the web. This post is really worth reading.

Introducing <rich-input>, a GitHub-like search/filter text input to embed on your site

While working on a side-project to better navigate and search through my record collection, I found myself in need of a rich search input: one that accepts free-form text alongside structured filters like artist:“Aphex Twin” or label:“Warp Records” — You know, like the one you see on GitHub when searching/filtering issues. When I quickly realized a standalone custom element for this didn’t exist yet, I nerd sniped myself into building curating one.

Animating CSS Grid Layouts with CSS Anchor Positioning

At CSS Day (back in June), someone asked me how Brave (the browser) might have built their New Tab Page which features some tiles laid out in a grid. While the grid is nothing spectacular, something special happens with it when you resize the viewport: as the available space changes, the grid nicely reorganizes itself in an animated way. The animations are also interruptible, so no View Transitions seem to be at play. So, how did they do it? I’m not sure. But if I were to recreate it, I’d use CSS

Have you messed up a commit message? The git commit --amend is okay for the most recent commit, but for the older commit you are out of luck and you need to use interactive rebase. Unless you are on version git 2.54, which comes with the git history reword command.

🔥 Vim tip

Do you know the :s (substitute) command? Of course you do!

:s/old/new

But did you know that any single-byte character works as a pattern delimiter? This is so useful when you replace paths that contain the `/` character. No more escapes!

Example:
:s,some/path,another/one

Docs:
:h pattern-delimiter

Adding OpenTelemetry to your Go project has never been easier. No more complicated setups and no more manual instrumentation needed. All you need is to build your binary using the new otelc CLI and it will enable auto-instrumentation.

OpenTelemetry

Announcing v1 of OpenTelemetry Go Compile-Time Instrumentation

If you write Java, Python, Node.js, or .NET, you have been able to add OpenTelemetry to an application without editing its code for years: attach an agent at startup and telemetry starts flowing. Go has been the exception. A Go program compiles to a single static binary with no runtime to hook into at startup, so Go developers have had to instrument by hand or reach for an out-of-process eBPF agent.

I knew that the CSS :nth-child(n of selector) is a thing, but I didn’t know how well supported it is nowadays. Another thing I didn’t know is that I can use CSS nesting with it like in the example below. Modern CSS is incredible ❣️

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/Reference/Selectors/:nth-child#of_selector_syntax_vs_selector_nth-child

#css

:nth-child() CSS pseudo-class - CSS | MDN

The :nth-child() CSS pseudo-class matches elements based on the indexes of the elements in the child list of their parents. In other words, the :nth-child() selector selects child elements according to their position among all the sibling elements within a parent element.

One of my favourite @neovim@hachyderm.io features just got a lot better. The incremental selection doesn't need third-party plugins anymore, and it is based on Treesitter first, and only falls back to LSP when needed. This is going to land soon as part of the 0.12 release. This is exciting.

unicode-bidi CSS property - CSS | MDN
MDN Web Docs

unicode-bidi CSS property - CSS | MDN

The unicode-bidi CSS property, together with the direction property, determines how bidirectional text in a document is handled. For example, if a block of content contains both left-to-right and right-to-left text, the user-agent uses a complex Unicode algorithm to decide how to display the text. The unicode-bidi property overrides this algorithm and allows the developer to control the text embedding.

I would like to report that SoundCloud on the free plan is absolutely not usable. The amount of super long and obtrusive adverts is insane. Insane! Don't blame them, they need to make money somehow, but UX needs to be there... Now it is just a radio for ads to me.
