I am writing this on Tusky, which is free software that someone had to write. It is running on an older Android phone, which someone had to assemble from components that other people had to make from raw materials that still other people had to produce.

You are reading this because it was transmitted via a sophisticated international communications system which someone had to design and someone else had to make from raw materials that someone else had to produce.

The electricity also had to be produced by someone, using machinery made by someone else.

Happy May Day, y'all. The world is nothing without our labour. Our masters know this; we should too.

There's a few pictures currently going around of a group of Patriot Front fascist paramilitaries on Washington DC public transport. A lot of people are worried by this. Some have talked at length about their worries. As someone who spends a certain amount of time in black bloc, let me talk you through some things I haven't seen said about these pictures but that I think are very relevant.

RIP John Blanche, Marjane Satrapi, Anthony Head.

I was thinking about this and was struck by the thought that there have been far more deaths of nice people than of awful ones, and this is a reminder that there *are* far more nice people than awful ones. The bad may be loud and powerful but they're also outnumbered.

A pet peeve: LLMs do not "democratise intelligence." They commodify it. Democratising something means that everyone has the same access to it regardless of how much money and power they have. Commodifying something means that you can buy as much of it as you can afford. You have to be really far gone to confuse the two.

@SecondUniverse It's applied really inconsistently, though. For example, the regret rate on laser eye surgery is weirdly high, but that doesn't get brought up in discussions about whether to allow it or not. It's almost as if the authorities only care about regret rate when it's a stick to beat underprivileged people (trans people, women) with.

For those who don't read Francophone social media, there is currently hilarity.

Jordan Bardella, a fascist and the probable next president, has tweeted that "when all seemed lost, Jeanne d'Arc lit a fire. We as a nation must do likewise."

Given what happened to Jeanne d'Arc, this is pretty funny.

@bms48 @Geri Street activist here. Any cop can arrest you at any time just because they want to. The legality of the arrest only comes up later, if they decide to charge you. Most arrests aren't followed up by a charge, meaning that there is no examination of the legality. It's a shitty system but somehow no electoral party has decided it's worth changing; possibly because it's convenient to the government, and in order to change it a party has to be the government.

@Remittancegirl This is something I've been thinking about, less in a "how could Trump do this" way and more in a "how is it that people are surprised" way. I think for a lot of people, there is still the concept that evil must have a foreign source, that people of their country are by nature good unless they are tempted into wickedness by outsiders. This is not a uniquely or even predominantly American thing of course. I've seen South Africans and Canadians do it, I've seen a lot of Europeans do it, and I'm sure people in every country do it.

@flipper@mastodonapp.uk @MissConstrue@mefi.social I'm not sure that I'd agree that Sam's arc is flat. Yes, he gets the last words in the novel, but he grows and changes a lot. Sam becomes the mighty elf warrior, after all. He sees an olifaunt. He's got far more world experience than when he starts out. The difference, I think, is that Sam survives the war. Frodo doesn't, not really: the person who came back from Mount Doom is, as is so often the case, just a shadow of who he was before. Between the destruction of the ring and his departure to the Havens, Frodo never really reintegrates into society, just kinda a ghost of who he was. But Sam reintegrates, has a family, and gets to meaningfully come home.

My eye is on Stephen Pinker to be next.

@OneInterestingFact@mastodon.ie As a South African: The fact that you didn't sell us weapons (and later, oil) was a bigger deal. It helped drive our fascist regime towards surrender, which in turn drove it towards the negotiating table. But the weapons and energy embargoes could not have happened until the smaller embargoes had shown the way. Did sports and entertainment sanctions drive South Africa to revolution? No. Would the later more effective sanctions have happened if the sports and entertainment sanctions didn't happen? Also no.

Lazyweb question for literature people, boosts welcome:

Cervantes' book Don Quixote is often called the first novel. Fiction writing certainly existed before that, but the novel form is a specific subset of fiction writing, and would have had a start.

In a similar way, what was the first short story?

@morfil At present, we have masters. After the revolution - which I fully believe will happen within our lifetimes - we will not, but there will still probably be those assholes that you identify. For now we must overthrow our masters; later we must prevent new ones arising. In both cases, now and after the revolution, the work of making a society function will still need to be done.

@julieofthespirits@kolektiva.social This is why I've argued that people should read documents like the Passing Of The Great Race and the Protocols Of The Learned Elders at school: not because they should believe anything in it (jesus fuck no) but because unless they learn that it is propaganda, and learn to study propaganda in a context where it can be dissected without being persuaded by it, then they run the risk of encountering it in the wild and engaging with it as if it's authentic (which would be very bad.) If you don't know how it works, you won't spot it when it comes back again and again.

Wikipedia quotes them as saying explicitly that the name comes from Pulp Fiction, which is why I referenced it. That may or may not be true, of course.

@urlyman@mastodon.social "Pepperidge Farm Remembers" is a turn of phrase, it just means "many people have forgotten but we have not." Here, I am suggesting that it is hilarious to remember that there was once a time when anyone thought of Starmer as non-authoritarian, given how his government has behaved in recent years, but there was in fact such a time. I believe it comes from a Family Guy joke originally, but I'm not certain.

@violent_grimes@kolektiva.social @gabrielesvelto@mas.to Remember that Samsung is a bizarrely huge conglomerate, which includes all sorts of businesses under its umbrella. Do you need a boat repaired? Do you want to hire an advertising team? Samsung are one of the world's largest in both of those industries. They own a bank, they do insurance, they do construction, they do all sorts of stuff. As such, if you count up all of Samsung's workers you end up with bank tellers and construction site workers and marketing people, all of whom are still workers and deserve the whole of the value they produce, but who are unlikely to be unionised together with the electronics workers who make up the core of the company. As a union organiser, I can understand that this sort of thing is hard-mode for us: people want to unionise along with their fellow workers, which makes sense, but it's very difficult to extend that union to other parts of a conglomerate without risking the union getting captured by management. So, I read the news item as "all the workers in electronics got that huge payday, which is great, but not the people in the shipyards and so forth."
