@elizayer Exactly! I’ve been trying to explain to people, especially those pushing AI at work, that writing code is not the hard part of my job. Identifying the real-world problems and designing solutions that are as minimalist and simple as possible are the hard parts. The code is an implementation detail.

@arroz@mastodon.social @billgoats@bitbang.social @europlus@social.europlus.zone Depends on the distro. Fedora makes it really easy. You get a notification that a new major release is available and you click to upgrade. Ubuntu has that do-release-upgrade command or something like that. Debian is a tad more manual but usually straight forward.

@fergycool Sadly not, although I do have a spare Sun Ultra 27 here that would be about period-accurate for this. Maybe Solaris 11. My VM already died though. Some disk issue. I've seen this before where the OS just doesn't play nice with a virtualised controller and disk. VMS! I've never used it but I've seen screenshots. I'd love a bit of DEC gear. One time I had my bid in on a Digital Multia and lost out and I've never seen one for remotely as cheap since :[

@fergycool Our big lesson here is that the best time to buy old computers and parts is at the moment of opportunity! It's not like they're making them any more. A VAX would have been *sweet*. Did you ever run VMS? I haven't used it personally, but at my first job they had one running for years to support a client that just didn't want to upgrade. We even had an LA120 around into the 2000s.

If you’re using a SOCKS5 proxy and it’s been replaced by a malicious server and you send a specific kind of badly-formed request the server can reply with a mangled response that causes RCE? Uh, ok, so sound the alarm for all 6 people using SOCKS5

@mixdup@mastodon.social Same here. My biggest problem with it now that I have to deal with is people outsourcing thinking to it. I'm trying to convince people that struggling to elucidate a thought or come up with a plan is a *good* thing. The struggle is how you hone and refine your ideas and identify gaps in knowledge. Insert some adage about the journey being the destination. On the other hand I find LLMs pretty cool for learning stuff especially when I'm just not interested in learning the nitty gritty. I can say "write me some Windows 2000 C98-compatible code to enumerate AppleTalk zones using multithreading" and bam, it does!

Having dealt with XML for 20+ years at this point, my opinion on it has largely evolved into: it's the worst markup language aside from all the others. In all seriousness, when done right, XML is actually quite nice. I think early frustration with XML came from developer decisions like improper/overuse of attributes, lack of XSD, and questionable structure decisions like repeating elements without containers.
