Cis people: normalize introducing yourself with your pronouns.

If only trans and gnc people do it, we're outing ourselves. If we don't, we accept getting misgendered. And when cis people do it, it acclimates other cis people to the practice and makes it safer for trans and gnc people.

If we're to have any shot of getting out of this, I really need my fellow white people to get past our apparently hardwired belief that something being illegal means it's impossible.

Because I keep having the same conversation over and over again.

Turns out I didn't need four years of college and three years of law school. The rule of law under the Roberts SCOTUS is six white people asking "what would Alexander Stephens and Adolf Hitler do?"

I need people to stop treating genocides like a hierarchy. "We can't talk about Palestine because it hurts Democrats." "We can't talk about trans people being genocided because Palestine." "We can't talk about Black and Indigenous people because trans people." LEARN TO MULTITASK. People are dying.

Apparently unpopular opinion: it is neither antisemitic nor inappropriate to protest a synagogue hosting a sale of land in illegal West Bank settlements.

And what bothers me most is the number of people who oppose these protests but say Israel bombing a mosque is okay because Hamas was inside.

Last week, the Trump administration explicitly stated its intention to "neutralize" - its word, not mine - US trans people.

Since then I can count on one hand the number of cis people who have even mentioned it. A whole bunch of cis people have talked about trans people demanding too much though.

Since the GOP is proudly gutting representation for marginalized people, I would really like to see Dems respond by saying fuck it, we SHOULD have representation quotas. At least 14% of Congress must be Black. Every territory and Indigenous Nation should get a seat. At least half should be women.

Also, you know, it would be really great if people could stop saying I'm a self hating, bad, or fake Jew because I adhere to the evidently still controversial opinion that Palestinian people are no less human than I am, and deserve no fewer rights than I have.

It would really be swell.

Hell, someone told me today I should call the media because they legitimately thought they were the first people in US history to have their constitutional rights violated. I swear to G-d they thought it had never happened before. And I really think this is a big factor in why we're here.

The single largest voting bloc in the United States is cishet white people.

There are more cis white women voters than Asian, Black, Jewish, Muslim, and trans people in the United States COMBINED.

Please stop blaming marginalized people for their own oppression.

Palestinians need to be "less extreme" about opposing occupation. Disabled people need to be "less extreme" about masking. Immigrants need to be "less extreme" about their legal status. And I'm just curious when exactly the majority will be "less extreme" about, you know, literally anything.

White Christians genuinely believe that anyone who chooses not to be Christian is oppressing them. They genuinely believe their religious liberty requires everyone to be just like them. They're like the Borg, but instead of "resistance is futile," it's "your resistance oppresses us."

This Mother's Day, please remember that 1 in 5 Black women will be evicted during her lifetime and 1 in 5 children born to a Black mom will be evicted during their childhood.

Mass eviction is as destructive and evil as mass incarceration. We just don't talk about it.

Every single time I've had the same three responses: "I don't believe you because they weren't on the news," "wait that's still going on?" and "if they were arrested, what did they do wrong?" And meanwhile good people are going through the legal system alone.

Step Four: People ask why there are no protests about the new thing. When the protests begin, they then get upset about the methods. Rinse and repeat. I've represented pro bono people arrested protesting against the Muslim ban (2017-18), George Floyd's murder (2020), institutional racism (2021),

So Mercy's brother has kids - our niece and nephews - and they are adorable. I love them so much. The only problem is that they can make me feel old.

Like when I was trying to explain dialup internet to our niece and she didn't believe me that such a thing existed 🫠

Step One: There's a protest that gets attention. Backlash starts about methods, and arguing begins. The protesters are accused of being too disruptive. Step Two: Some of the protesters are arrested, usually overcharged. A bunch of people say they deserved it. Others give the protesters attaboys.

Step Three: The protesters' cases wind their way slowly through the courts. Months or even years later, their cases finally end. The response from most people is "wait, that's still going on?" Others insist they had it coming, or say their cases ending are detracting from a newer cause.

ABA accreditation requires DEI be considered. And given that state bars have exempted themselves from civil rights statutes going back to the 1970s (seriously, it's worth another thread), it's the ABA that basically prevents state bars from saying "white cishet men only, all others go away."

No shade to marginalized people who are leaving a place, genuinely. But demanding or suggesting it as a large scale solution to oppression is categorically unserious and always will be.

I take venlafaxine every morning. Yes, it's an antidepressant. It is every bit as important as my HRT. I have major depressive disorder. My antidepressant is the treatment. There is no shame in needing an antidepressant. RFK Jr. is wrong. It's just like taking an antibiotic for an infection.

I've received a great deal of criticism lately for taking cases, doing advocacy, and posting fundraisers for Palestinians, with people saying I care more about Palestine than what is happening here in the US.

But I disagree, for three reasons.

I went to law school full time and worked full time, at the same time. I started college at 16 and law school at 20. And here's the thing: I'm not special. If you're thinking about law school, DO IT. You're not too old or too young. You don't have to be a genius. If I could do it, so can you.

Plus, they have class action waivers and arbitration clauses in their terms of service, so you might not even be able to sue them if they screw it up. Plus, you have very few, if any, privacy protections. Please, if you're going to use one of these services, have an attorney review the documents.

And I genuinely believe we do people a disservice if we are telling people that they should have the same relationship with the legal system and profession they've always had. This is a different world now, and they need to protect themselves. We must recognize that.

We really need to stop acting like everything is fine and this is just a pendulum swing in a partisan battle over the court system. With the ABA itself under attack, there is now an increasing threat that queer and racialized people won't even be allowed to BECOME lawyers in the near future.

It's easy to say "we shouldn't overreact" or "the law is reasonable" or "the sky just is." And yes, it's easy to say the legal system has always sucked. But if the sky turns green, sometimes that means a tornado is imminent. Sometimes a destructive system CAN get worse.
