RE: https://mathstodon.xyz/@oantolin/117299252447200305

proof·la·tion /pruːfˈleɪ.ʃən/

noun [neologism, philosophy of mathematics, computer science]

  1. The rapid depreciation of the epistemic, academic, or reputational value of mathematical proofs caused by the automated, low-cost generation of formal proofs by artificial intelligence and automated theorem provers.

  2. A condition in the mathematical community where the sheer volume of formally verified theorems exceeds the capacity for human comprehension, shifting the primary bottleneck of mathematics from establishing truth to extracting insight.

Bill Phillips ("Phillips Curve") used flowing water to model the economy in in 1949.

according to his friend economist Richard Lipsey, "all the staff came out to humiliate this upstart idiot." Phillips showed how water flowed from the Treasury tank to chambers representing health and education (as the government spent money) and then got pumped back to the Treasury more or less rapidly as you pulled a lever to tweak the taxation rate. "It turned out after ten minutes that he knew more than everybody there, and they shut up," says Lipsey. They offered him a job at LSE.

Astronomers and particle physicists already know how to share expensive instruments, develop complex tools. Maybe that model will be used by mathematicians in the future. There will be organization not unlike CERN that develops open models and software for personal use locally, and makes collective deals for cheap compute they buy bulk from neoclouds not bound to any megacorp. For bigger needs you gang up with like-minded mathematicians and prepare a proposal for massive compute time.

1/2 A global emergent workspace in language models (J-space) https://www.anthropic.com/research/global-workspace

J-space wasn’t designed or programmed. It emerged on its own during training process. J-space has a number of unique properties:

  • Claude can report on these representations. If you ask Claude what it's thinking about, it will tell you what’s in the J-space. Non-J-space representations are less reportable.

  • It can also modulate them on request. If you ask Claude to think about something, or solve a problem silently in its head, it will light up the appropriate patterns in its J-space. By contrast, it has trouble modulating patterns not in the J-space.

  • Claude uses its J-space for internal reasoning. If you ask Claude to solve a problem that requires multiple steps, the intermediate steps will light up in its J-space, even when it doesn’t say them out loud. These J-space patterns causally mediate its performance in such tasks, despite being smaller in magnitude than other representations.

  • Representations in the J-space can be used flexibly for many tasks—for example, once “France” has lit up in Claude’s J-space, the model can recall its capital, or its national currency, or the continent it belongs to.

  • However, despite its important role, the J-space is not involved in most of what a language model does—speaking fluently, recalling simple facts, using correct grammar, etc. In experiments where we prevented Claude from using its J-space, it still interacted normally, but lost its higher-order cognitive functions.

Partial meniscectomy, one of the world’s most common knee surgeries does not help and may even be harmful.

Is the iPhone Birth Control? Causal Evidence from AT&T’s 2007–2011 Carrier Monopoly
https://www.nber.org/papers/w35310

Backround: From the launch 2007
through Feb 2011, the iPhone was limited to AT&T subscribers in the US. Smarphone exposure was limited to AT&T’s cellular network making natural experiment possible

Treated counties are systematically more urban than controls. They address this imbalance through the
SDID estimator’s pre-treatment reweighting of controls and using a complementary entropy-balanced Poisson specification.

... Entropy-balanced Poisson and synthetic difference-in-differences event studies imply that access to the iPhone reduced births by 4.5–8.0% at ages 15–19 and 3.2–6.6% at ages 20–24, with statistically significant but smaller declines among older cohorts. Placebo analyses applied to Verizon and Sprint’s pre-2011 coverage footprint are null. .... National-survey evidence on time use and sexual behavior is consistent with the iPhone reducing in-person interactions, increasing pornography use, and reducing sexual frequency.

AI language models are trained on text created by scientists, writers, thinkers, entertainers and more. Erasure human contributions gives people a perception of AI as “this new super alien angel who's going to come and save us or kill us” rather than what it really is or could be: “a new, very high-level, very large-scale form of cooperation [that] is even more glorious than having a big alien angel. I think it's really cool.”

When you represent closed system and something changes on one side of the equation, equal and opposite change must happen on the other side. Formal sciences: math, logic, statistics, theoretical computer science, game theory, decision theory, systems theory, theoretical linguistics, information theory, etc. My wide definition: Anything formal with formal and abstract theorems where playing with the formal system alone is interesting even after all references to the external world are removed (this definition excludes activities with formal systems like programming or playing chess, but includes theoretical sides of analyzing those systems.)

Review: The Boys
(now in the 5th season)
Developer and showrunner is Saul Kripke's cousin!

I don't generally like superhero movies, TV series, or comics, with the exception of Watchmen (both the comic and TV series).

The Boys is also good. It has very dark humor and it's very gross, but what makes it really stand out is the accuracy of the political satire. The heroes are still silly and go through normal emotional tropes of superhero bullshit, but the villains, their character development, and their interactions are almost painfully realistic and good.

The Boys really nails the current zeitgeist.

They have near perfect timing somehow. Homelander is going nuts at the same rate as Trump. Both Trump and Homelander depicted as gods within the same week.

Rapid concerted switching of the neural code in the inferotemporal cortex https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-026-10267-3

.... for faces, face cells transition from detection to discrimination by switching from an object-general code to a face-specific one. More broadly, our findings indicate that there is a previously unknown mechanism for neural representation: concerted stimulus-dependent switching of the neural code used by a cortical area.

(1) it allows for attention and other top-down influences on encoding; (2) it uses resonance to implement parallel, cue-dependent retrieval; (3) it explains memory for recency; (4) it offers a single-system account of repetition priming; and (5) the power law of forgetting can be derived from the model’s assumptions in a straightforward way.

Data centers vs megaprojects.

Annual spending as % of that years US GDP (log scale).

Note: 50-60%, of data center CAPEX (Capital Expenditures) is deprecating fast (hardware must be replaced every 3-5 years). OPEX (operating expence) is also very high due to energy usage.

Additional comparisons:

Total social media ad revenue + total media and entertainment sector in the us make roughly 3% of US GDP year after year.

Transportation (total final demand is around 8-9% of GDP.

If $1.7 trillion grows 15% per year and is subject to an 80% capital gains tax, everyone in the bottom 50% (4 billion) would get $51 a year. When the bottom 50% earns an average of just over $4,000 a year, it would give them a less than 2 percent income boost. (In reality, that tax money would go to the rich countries.) Oxfam frames these questions in a way that gives wrong impressions. People read this and leave thinking that taxing offshore wealth would fix global poverty. The bonus package has real product and operational milestones. (SpaceX revenue is just 15 billion btw.)

You can hype up market cap for a long time but you can't hype up earnings and revenue for next decade.

Operational:

  • Adjusted EBITDA: $50 Billion (1st tranche) up to $400 Billion (for the final tranches).

  • revenue: $100 Billion (1st tranche) up to $500 Billion (for the final tranches).

  • free cash flow: $5 Billion (1st tranche) up to $50 Billion (for the final tranches).

Product: milestones vehicle deliveries: 20 Million units delivered annually, 20 million active full self driving subscriptions, 1 million Robotaxis in commercial operation, 1 million humanoid robots delivered.

His 2018 milestone was challenging but this is much harder.
