Press Ganey (survey company) sent me a survey about my experience with the hospital during my surgery. I don't usually do surveys, because I'm not giving up my time for someone's market analysis. I was going to do it because the staff was awesome. It was truly the best hospital experience I'd ever had. But when I opened it, it has a LOT of questions and the print is so small it's going to give me a headache trying to get through it. So I wrote "cannot complete -- print is too small" on it and am going to send it back courtesy of their free postage. I'll fight ableism as and when I can. This is a pretty easy way to do so, not that it will make any difference. It never does because people love to be ableist. #Ableism #Disability #Vision

"Previous experiments in mice had indicated that violet light near 380 nanometers could reduce myopia. Those studies also showed that opsin 5 (OPN5), a light-sensing receptor, was necessary for the protective effect. However, light at that wavelength did not produce the same response in tree shrews. Their eye lenses, like human lenses, block most wavelengths below roughly 400 nanometers. "Human lenses, and now we know tree shrew lenses, don't transmit a lot of light in the ultra-violet spectrum," Lang says. "They basically cut off most wavelengths below 400 nanometers. This finding pushed us to explore slightly longer wavelengths that could still stimulate OPN5. Ultimately, we found that indigo light from 419 to 446 nanometers was the most effective at preventing myopia." That result led the researchers toward indigo light, which is capable of passing through the lens while still activating the biological pathway they were investigating." #science #visionhttps://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/08/260824065510.htm

Recently I learned about TouchMapper: Create tactile maps easily for any address. They use #OpenStreetMap to create printable 3D models of an area, for people with no/bad vision to literally get a feel for the place. I love the initiative! https://touch-mapper.org/en/ #maps #accessibility #inclusion #vision #3dprinting #AwesomeStuff

Dear tech talk/conference presenters: USE BiGGER FONTS PLEASE! The average age of your bog standard techie is increasing. I've had crappy eyesight all my life, but I suspect now more and more are struggling to actually try to read the code samples you're putting up. Make the fonts (for you) uncomfortably large. I guarantee your audiences, both in person and later on Youtube will thank you! #a11y #vision #technology
