By day, #devops CTO for the Cloud business at Cloud&Heat in Germany.

By night, #xmpp #electronics #embedded #penandpaper #rpg #photography.

My photography related alt is at @jssfr@vernissage.pnpde.social . May follow from here instead of there if you post non-photographic content, too.

Concerned with the state of the world (climate, for one, hatred and war for another), trying not to worry too much about things outside my control.

Interactions, boosts etc. in general welcome.

#Linux UX root cause analysis I cannot play the new album I bought on the living room speakers, because mpd on Raspbian trixie crashes when updating the libnfs-mounted database, because of some bug in libnfs14 or how mpd in stable uses libnfs14. I cannot use a kernel-based nfs mountpoint, because mpd on Raspbian stable gets stuck during playback when running off nfs, because of unknown reasons. I cannot use a proxy database, because on the NFS server, mpd gets stuck scanning the library immediately, because of a kernel bug involving io_uring (which mpd uses), because of an ancient kernel running on the NAS, because newer kernels fail to boot, because of a buggy PCIe root cluster in the rk3399 SoC triggering kernel panics and/or making the SATA card not enumerate, rendering the NAS useless.

@th@social.v.st The worst bit about that one is that I *actually* spent at least 30 minutes of my life debugging that. (Plug something USB into my laptop and wonder why it doesn't enumerate. Of course, the fact that I got the orientation right on the first attempt should've been a red flag.)

@bagder@mastodon.social Thanks!

It is probably a good time for the bad guys who can easily find this many problems themselves by just using the same tools, before all the projects get time, manpower and energy to fix them.

I might add: also a good time for the bad people to step up as maintainers.

@amca01 @daisy I grew up in Germany, and in school, we were taught that the Nazis had different levels of effectiveness (for the lack of a better word) at killing jews in the countries they invaded, depending on whether the country centrally stored the religion of their citizens. Your toot above made me for the first time realize that even a (to a binary person) innocent-seeming gender form field can be a major threat in the wrong political climate. Even if the entity collecting the data means no harm, and will never mean harm, we've seen over and over again that data which has once been collected, can easily end up in the wrong hands (be it due to seizure or a data breach). So, thank you for that reminder.

@Alrecenk@peoplemaking.games I've pondered this further (physics + network hits a sweet spot). Effectively, this creates a time gradient between two players (and something like a multi-point, voroni-ish gradient for N players). If two players with high latency are quite close to each other, the gradient becomes very steep. I wonder what that implies in player-versus-player situations. Have you had a chance to play around with that? I'm curious :).

@ordnung One thing I found out at some point is that curl sets some DNS options which dig does not set by default. That has already caused a lot of headaches because those options factor into the cache key (at least in some implementations), so while changing records in a zone, one might see a difference between curl and dig and be very confused. I wonder whether those same DNS options caused this issue.

@computer@facts.computer I'm still advocating for a yearly mandatory training for all software developers where they have to build something useful on an ATtiny2313A (i.e. 128 bytes of RAM, 2kB of flash, 8 MHz clock rate) microcontroller. For everyone to get some perspective, ffs.

@catsalad@infosec.exchange So we showed our cat a video of birbs... maybe a month ago.

Ever since then, she'll prepare to launch attacks on:

  • sidescroller / platformer games
  • random videos, in particular when bouncy things are involved
  • scrolling text

She'll climb on the keyboard and try to crawl into the screen. Or look around on the other side to see where her bounty went.

Until last week or so, she only targeted laptops, but then she realized that the big screen also sometimes has stuff like that.

This picture is from last night, when we watched a platformer stream and she suddenly got very attentive.
