@ifixcoinops If you have the wherewithal (and I absolutely understand if you don’t), it might be worth emailing Aldi again and saying “thanks for listening to my recommendation”. Most companies are used to nothing but negative feedback, so some (and I honestly don’t know if Aldi is one) pay much more attention to any positive feedback they get. If you can’t, let me know–there’s an Aldi in my town so I could get away with writing that email, too (though not the “i suggested it” part).

@blogdiva This isn’t quite the same, but it reminds me of something that was going around a few months back: telling cops something like “i support police, but, man, it’s a shame ICE is ruining the reputation of law enforcement. it’s gotta make things harder for you” as a way to drive a wedge.

@gwynnion@mastodon.social We own two (classic version) from: https://hugofroschusa.com/ and they’ve held up quite well. Usage is several times a month, or (if camping) daily.

@yaxu I don’t think that’s a stupid question. IIRC, in matrix math, “dimensions” didn’t refer to the number of axes, but the length of each side. It’s a word with many, well, you get it. I also don’t think it’s likely to change any time soon (in the same way that programming languages will probably continue to count from 0 for a long time to come).

@elilla@transmom.love I’m a data engineer. I’ve been saying for years if not decades: “Bad data is worse than no data”. And, generally, when people hear that, they agree with me. When I point out that genAI produces bad data, the turnaround to “oh, but, so useful”, “early days”, etc, is quick and disheartening.

Trans people have a right to exist. A right to live without oppression. A right to privacy. A right to be secure in their bodies. A right to inform their own medical care. A right to navigate society without discrimination or fear of violence.

Trans people have a right to the care and respect we should afford all people.

Happy International Trans Day of Visibility. Those who are visible, I see and cherish you. Those who are not, I hold you in my heart.

@futurebird I love the idea of seeing the majestic fungal towers that ruled the land. But without being able to share it, i’d find it indistinguishable from prototaxites fanfic, even if i’d witnessed it myself.

@flipper @pluralistic A slightly different take: I do “keep an open mind” about AI sentience, I just am unmoved by anecdotal evidence. If, for example, somebody from the Anthropic engineering department told me, in some detail: they ran into the limits of purely syntactic generationso they bootstrapped a semantic model using wikipedia and wiktionarywhich they then replicated on a different scale to macrocosmically create a world modelwhich is now underlying all interactions with claudeand is now showing some signs of self-awareness visible in the mutating world modeland here is the evidence of all that … then I’d say “wow! that’s surprising and impressive! i hope you publish to a peer reviewed journal and this is reproducible, because it could be really revolutionary!” Instead, we get “early days”, we get “we’re so close!”, we get “well you can’t technically prove it’s not sentient”, and we get lovesick octagenarians.

If you have not yet heard, Jonathan Ross is the ICE agent that murdered Renee Good. ICE is mad that his name is out there, so it only makes sense to ensure it stays out there. https://newrepublic.com/post/212340/ice-poll-worker-election-delete-instagram-post

@legionsofbob@lgbtqia.space I’ve known kids that age who have learned Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu/) through a school program and had a blast, but I don’t know how easy it is to work with if you don’t have an instructor.

@geospacedman@mastodon.social I first heard “Vote with your feet” at a BarCamp, but I think it should apply to any conference barring attendee rules otherwise. In other words, feel free to walk out whenever, for whatever reason. I personally like to be ready to provide feedback to the speaker should they ask for it (e.g. “I chose it because of the title but realized it was different than I inferred”, “it turned out to be too advanced for me to follow”, or “I had a hard time with your presentation style”), but that’s hardly required and not everybody’s up for that.

@chaudum@mstdn.social My personal theory? Middle and upper managers who used to be coders get these tools and feel like coders again. Therefore, they reason, the tools must be good, so we all must use them.
