Well then… After three years at Tailscale, today I’m starting a new chapter at Unraid as Head of Product Marketing. I’m proud of what we built at #tailscale and enormously grateful to the people I worked with, and to everyone who watched the videos. 1600 subs to 78k, 10m views, and over 150 videos. Not too shabby. Now I get to spend more time furthering the self-hosting mission I care so much about. I’ll be doing product work, community, technical education and, yes, plenty of video. There’s some really good stuff being worked on, and Unraid 8 will be a huge release. #selfhosting #homelab

Thank the stars for Linux. Seriously, I mean, it is such a gift to have it. The fact that I can download all software I need from the internet, for free, legally, to make my computer work - and it’s arguably as good or better for the most part on the desktop than any commercial option - is nothing short of a miracle in this age of surveillance and enshittification. To all of you who see this that contribute to this modern marvel, I thank you. 🙏

The new Siri is just as absolutely terrible as the old one. With the slight exception being that this time, I let myself hope it wouldn’t be complete crap. But it is, don’t waste your time.

If I've done this right, my blog is now migrated to a fully static backend using Astro. I didn't do a radical redesign of the theme for the migration MVP, but I did add a better search, an archive and some other small things likely only I'll notice. But completing this project is a big day, really. This marks the end of my blog being CMS based since before it morphed into what is now LinuxServer.io (before splitting off again a while later). LSIO was just my blog in the earliest days; it's far more than that now, as it should be. I have maintained this thing consistently since 2013, from the Wordpress beginnings migrating to Ghost on August 17th 2015 (according the DB). I migrated it all the way from pre-1.0 Ghost to the current v6 release. It's been a good run. But, a couple of months ago my fully patched Ghost instance got popped by two different CVEs in 2 weeks, and it was at that moment I knew I had to drop the CMS. I flipped the switch tonight and the blog migration is complete. It was a huge task, as you might imagine going through 11+ years of posts with images, tags, and other data too. I do hope you'll follow the RSS feed over at https://blog.ktz.me for many years to come. Thank you to everyone who read even one word of one post, I owe you all a great gratitude in this life. #selfhosted

Surely someone at Apple must appreciate that this is a shit user experience? And most people are just going to click yes regardless? It's not adding extra security when done en-masse like this after a .x OS update. SO frustrating.

Now, more than ever, there is such incredible value in escaping algorithmic bile.

Get an RSS reader. Find real people, writing real words, think for yourself, and enjoy the imperfect, non-engagement bait way the internet used to be.

I just found two sticks of 32gb DDR5 RAM in a box from when we packed to leave last year.

Back then it was worth $100. Now? I can retire.

I’m seriously considering shrinking my ZFS pool to protect myself from current hardware pricing. My primary pool is split into 2 z2 vdevs each presently. 7x 20tb disks + 3x 18tb. The pool is about 62% full. I could easily delete a ton of media and get it under 40%. And with USED 18tbs on average going for $275 a pop these days, I think that’s just smart. My doing this I can keep 2-3-4? Drives as spares. Maybe I won’t need them. But I think I’ll worry a bit less about them if I know I can have at least 1-2 spares ready. Anyone else considering such measures in these testing times?

Liftmaster hates this one simple trick! Security+ 3.0? HACKED! (OK not really).

I had a spare remote and have wired it up to two relays powered by #esphome so I can open my garage doors in #homeassistant without the stupid myq cloud crap

My house. My hardware. My way! As it should be.

Also, yay. Go Artemis II !

I’ve had one of thise periods lately where every waking second has been filled with things I had to do whether I liked it or not.

My task list is pretty much complete tonight. And I have no idea what to do with myself.

@joeress@mastodon.social they’re masterful. The costumes are some whimsy, and why not? Musically very accomplished. Incredibly good live, especially given the technicality required on the looping. The way they dip in and out of the loops. The drummer playing time signatures that transcend the meter of the loops too. Gosh it’s good.

What does your #selfhosted backup situation look like?

Mine is a box at a friends place with ZFS zrepl based replication hourly. Plus a second box at my parents for geographically distributed safety using restic to separate any ZFS replication issues. Basically a backup of a backup 🎰

@bazurk@social.lol do you actually want automatic updates though?
Waking up to an update alert is preferable to waking up to an app with a botched db migration that wiped all your data because you weren’t there to do it.

@rune@social.intothecloud.net that will be my next iteration! I had the sonoffSV on hand so used them for this prototype but they're not the best device for this application (plus they are huge). V2 will use a couple of PhotoMOS solid state relays instead plus a small buck converter to power the clicker mounted to a perf board.

Set up a Hermes instance last night with a few different local models hooked up from my Mac. I’ve hooked that up to home assistant via an mcp server, and have already automated more little QOL things in the last few hrs than I have in the last few months. Absolutely end game being able to use natural language to debug automations via telegram without having to tether to a computer. This is huge! #homeassistant
