The costs are enormous, the companies running it have no solutions except to build bigger data centers and consume even more water and electricity with no solid goals on what progress even looks like. And don't tell me "oh, the Russians or the Chinese will beat us at this!" They can't even get indoor plumbing to their rural populace, they don't give a solitary shit as to what sacrifices their population will have to pay. And for what? A barely working system that is guaranteed to make mistakes that will be more difficult to correct than if they were never used at all?

@eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place I've only written so much code and created a few rudimentary games before stopping primarily because I didn't feel like I fully understood the code I wrote and didn't feel like I could release any of it into the wild because of that lack of understanding on my part. It felt irresponsible to do so. I'm guessing many others don't feel the same.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange From what I've heard, the hackers keep pushing back the deadline for payment, and chances are they know they don't really have data of value. Most of it is essentially private messages on that platform, DOBs and educational email addresses and not much else. The real embarrassment is that those hackers still seem to have access to the system and Canvas isn't capable of admitting or even coming close to solving the issue.

My wife has worked at 2 major universities in high level positions and she will tell you herself that their IT Departments are, if anything, over-funded, but with poor management.
