Beggar Midas

@TechTangents@dialup.space It's more complicated than that. A *LOT* more complicated. https://mastodon.social/@Beggarmidas/116682187638404935

@thief_of_fire@infosec.exchange @dbattistella@mstdn.ca *heh* Oh, if only you knew how much of archaeology is still riddled with little cults of personality. The evidence for actual social structures is scarce to non-existent, depending on local conditions. It's ALL interpretive.

@thief_of_fire@infosec.exchange I see. You're one of those people who can't make a valid counterargument so instead attempt to attack me personally. It's fucking weak. That's the kind of shit MAGRATS do. Get the hell out here with that bullshit. Come back when you can argue a case without having to resort to that middleschool crap.

@QasimRashid@mastodon.social Newsmax is one deep cover investigative journalist away from executives facing criminal violations of labor laws.

@noelreports@mstdn.social I wish. Think most of us do. But I doubt it's going to go down that way. If Hitler had the bomb would he have used it in his last hours? Putin very well might. I'd say 50/50. The best way to deal with him would be to collapse half a mountain down on top of his private train in his private rail tunnels with him inside it. Somewhere good and deep so he couldn't get any radio signals out, where he'd suffocate before aid could dig down to where he was.

@maxleibman@beige.party I don't know about queerest. But there is a solid presence here. Like you i'm cishet. Never bothered me. Only time I care about the style of someone's bedroom sports is when there's some potential i'll be involved in them somehow! 😎

@selzero@syzito.xyz ...And you'd know all this if you ever bothered surfacing for air beyond your goddamn bandwagon echo chamber. Sharpen up. We have zero room for any more fuckups. Your identity politics can wait. Survival first. Squabble later. If we don't remove the tyrant, your life & mine and everyone we've known is at risk. We'll be criminalized. Those who resist 'reeducation' will be disposed of. There is a very real probability of a Holocaust Ver 2. Get your fucking priorities straightened out.

@wackJackle@norden.social WTF am i talking about? The actual lay of the geopoltical landscape, as broadly noted by studied experts on the topic. Communism may be dead as disco, that doesn't change the underlying hegemonic competition that defined the real nature of the cold war. Russia has once again making a bid for the brass ring. Has been since 2014, really. China has tossed it's hat in, too. If you think the USA is bad, you'll be horrified after diving int their activities over the last hundred years.

@dbattistella@mstdn.ca Bunkaroo we have very little idea of how most people lived even AFTER writing was invented. We can only infer what they were like before....And bias can't be removed from that picture. You're seeing what you want to see, same as Bezos.

@Yeichiel_Om_Intl@mastodon.social @Gargron@mastodon.social Indeed. Both tyranny & disinformation depend on complacency to thrive. I only wish more people were less eager to participate in either. That is an ailment of the human spirit for which I have no cure.

@cremevax@infosec.exchange Thats the template. As soon as Darth Gilligan cheats the midterms without provoking mass unrest it takes a steep nosedive into far, far worse. Worse than most of you can really imagine...yet.

@coachgowron@tenforward.social Its how I try to lead my life.

@mwl@io.mwl.io Never seen this before, but i'm already a fan. This is just damned cute. I wonder if she'll ever hook up with elf on a shelf?

@Mastodon@mastodon.social @iftas@mastodon.iftas.org any plans to identify or counter the synthetic identity clusters flooding your platform? They take advantage of your decentralized framework to inject these synthetic communities en masse. https://stratcomcoe.org/publications/beyond-spam-bots-the-rise-of-ai-powered-disinformation-machines-and-the-imperative-for-strategic-response/342

@iftas@mastodon.iftas.org @Mastodon@mastodon.social I'm afraid the old methods wont work against these newest threats. Did you read the stratcom publication? To my knowledge there is no remedy as of yet. These newest bots resist the old methods of detection.

@petervalkema@mastodon.social @davidho@mastodon.world They are showing results. This isn't like those con artists back in 2007 that took EVERYONE for a ride pocketing big bucks. We're seeing decarbonization occurring within industries, retrofits of existing process to reduce emissions and even turn the captured carbon into commercially useful products. One promising effort out of MIT actually found a way to make something even MORE energy dense than oil. Many are well past PoC and are working on scaling. :)

@skeletor@mas.to No. That's not an answer. That's just conflict avoidance. THat's how you end up with fascists gaining power right under your nose until they become strong enough to kill you and everyone like you. What you propose is little more than a maximally painful way to be forcefully euthanized.

@tante@tldr.nettime.org Not sure that's a great allegory. EVERY technical development over all of recorded history had it's share of luddites. If civilization & progress had *ever* depended on the explicit acquiescence of it's slowest adopters we'd probably still be squatting in caves sucking grubs out of rotting timbers.

@mattsheffield@mastodon.social Indeed. But let’s view this through a slightly different lens. Our declared enemy, intent on killing or displacing the rest of us, has skillfully set the stage to exploit their fears. They’ve even been considerate enough to broadcast its changing flavor every week. When combined with nearly a decade of hypervigilance has accrued enormous self destructive potential just awaiting the rights triggers at the right moments. In War we'd call that a distinct strategic advantage.

@masek@infosec.exchange A clean assessment of the situation. Not leaning into the hype OR the hate. Bravo. We need more straight shooters on deck now more than ever. When you have a moment could you please read my pinned posts about weaponized Russian LLM's? It's an important evolution in their disinformation campaign nobody knows about it yet. You have more reach than I do and i'm trying to get the warning out. It's already sewing a lot more chaos than folks realize. https://mastodon.social/@Beggarmidas/116682187638404935

@keydelk@fosstodon.org @joachim@boitam.eu @ProcessParsnip@mastodon.ie Compared to other imminent & existential risks we're facing datacenters are kinda chump change, wouldn't ya say? We've got a tyrant insistent on staying in the white house by any means, with all the inevitable holocaust ver. 2 that'll follow comes bundled with it. WW III ready to kick off anytime from five minutes to two years from now. A bleeding kansas style civil war fermenting in the, heh, wings. As things go the datacentersis are piffling small change

@alda@topspicy.social "AI" is to left wingers what "socialism" is to right wingers. An emotionally provocative word devoid of any real world relevance or value. Congratulations. You sound just like your pollical opponents now. Well done.

@liaizon@social.wake.st Eh....Boy have you got a weird read on that one. Unless you have evidence or proof to the contrary what that actually means is a free speech advocate is in a position to advise government about classification standards.

@cremevax@infosec.exchange *IF* we play our cards right. IF we can get the word out widely enough before Midterms IF we can get broad agreement the overall plan IF we can agree on the go-triggers IF we can pull the numbers needed to make it work Well, my friend, we can checkmate his ass at midterms. In war it is said 'don't give your enemy problems. Those can be solved. Give them Dilemmas in which both answers are equally painful." I've spent months working on a plan so no matter which way he chooses...He loses

@nilz@norden.social @tante@tldr.nettime.org Uhm...You may wish to fact check those. Just sayin. There was a whole era specifically called the 'robber barons' for a reason. Also depends on how you mean 'forced'. If you mean enslaved maybe not. But too poor & desperate to be picky about a job then yes. As things go (for the moment at any rate) you have more options than any of your ancestors did a century ago or further. I know this is a bad moment & all. But compare yourself to a Victorian pauper or medieval serf for contrast

@jonny@neuromatch.social You really, really don't want to know. I promise you, thats not a thread you wanna pull if you ever might wish to have a decent night of fully untroubled sleep ever again.

@mattsheffield@mastodon.social Yeah. Unless we unseat this malevolent power looking to follow Russias lead. nobody elses politics mean jack or diddly as progress on ANY of them will become impossible....ANd very likely be criminalized. Good to see the blue team starting to gain some level of self preserving coherence. He's gotta go no matter WHAT it takes. We're one final Midterm stop away from a totalitarian nightmare. ...And I have a plan to keep his fingers off the election, or to punish him if he does. HMU

@renardboy@mastodon.social @skeletor@mas.to can't erase. But you can counternarrative or fight or be visible resistance to. We can no longer afford these politics of avoidance. Its gonna get us all killed.

@davatron5000@mastodon.social Yeah, right up until a monsoon floods his property to kingdom come.. The storm drains were there to protect him & his property, and he went and sabotaged it. What a fucking genius.

@alexanderbird@mstdn.ca Too bad it's substantially incorrect. If you have to lie to make a case, you don't have a case. If you need to exaggerate or make emotive appeals because your actual case lacks merit, you don't have a case. It's a tool. Obviously it's not going anywhere. It's a very immature technology which is seeing rather irrational early adoption inappropriately but that's hardly it's fault. We can thank the last century of science fiction for wildly placing peoples expectations so badly.

@hiisikoloart@writing.exchange Maybe Musk. The scale of funding exceeds any single funder by orders of magnitude. These silly things have an astronomical stock value roughly equal to about 1/3rd the annual TOTAL GDP of the USA. Maybe fact check those assertions a bit? I'm sure you wouldn't want to appear to be making a purely emotive appeal in the absence of supporting proof, right? That's what those MAGA clowncars do.

@ahltorp@mastodon.nu @wackJackle@norden.social There's only two countries still using it. They're totalitarian, irrelevant AND heavily isolated. This isn't just an American Viewpoint. It'a a factual one. Get over yourself.

@dansup@mastodon.social When did y'all start using AI moderation to handle takedown appeals?

@EdCates@mastodon.social @selzero@syzito.xyz You have a choice as to whether you will continue to do their dirty work for them or not. Look at yourself. Honestly. You can barely control your emotional outburst. You don't even know why you're so damned angry over such little provocation, if you cool off & regain enough control to interrogate your feelings. You've been conditioned to respond irrationally. You weren't always like this until the past few years, were you? Think back. Find your center. Breathe. This isn't you

@ProcessParsnip@mastodon.ie @keydelk@fosstodon.org @joachim@boitam.eu Theres a lot of various people now working on the problem and there's a lot of genuine reasons to be hopeful. There was never going to be a workable 100% solution. Instead like other events its just going to take us a bunch of 1% & 2% & 3% solutions that'll collectively carry us over the finish line.

@jack_daniel@mastodon.social what's funny is you amplifying a weaponized LLM"s poisoned narrative. Et tu, Brutus? https://stratcomcoe.org/publications/beyond-spam-bots-the-rise-of-ai-powered-disinformation-machines-and-the-imperative-for-strategic-response/342

@lritter@mastodon.gamedev.place @changoteca@mas.to "supposed"? Dude, they've made no bones about it. They want you and everyone like you cowed, dead or displaced. Wake the hell up and smell the coffee.

@wackJackle@norden.social Fun fact. We're now in a three way cold war that's about to go hot. If not this year, the next. do you always participate in Russian agitprop campaigns, or is this a new leaf you're turning over?

@CynAq@beige.party If and more likely when something DOES happen he's going to be on the hook personally for all the damage to his neighbors property as well. Nor will insurance cover a thin dime of it. They wont even cover HIS claim, since he tampered with the city system. That whole works is engineered very carefully to deposit the runoff into the canals where it can be safely controlled.

@ahltorp@mastodon.nu @wackJackle@norden.social *sigh^ You really need my help to figure this shit out? How sad. Well, first thing is lets clear up what defines communism. THEN we can move down a list of who qualifies. Titles don't mean shit. Russia calls itself a federation, but it not, is it? It's an autocracy wearing a veneer. Communism is an economic system in which the state exercises complete control over it's industry & economy. The state itself is the only employer. So what countries fit this? Cuba & North Korea.

@davidho@mastodon.world So how long before y'all stop trying to sabotage every carbon capture startup showing promise? It's beyond obvious that we're not going to meet 2050 zero emission goals. Your camps attempts to extort additional concessions fell flat on it's face. So whats your plan B? Don't have one, do ya?

@Newhereish@mastodon.social @skeletor@mas.to Agreed. These politics of avoidance has allowed evil to thrive with nothing standing up to counter it. Now we must fight like our lives depend on it. ...Because they do.

@davatron5000@mastodon.social I lived there for 17 years. He's only one century flood away from being denied an insurance claim. With climate shift, would you imagine those odds having gotten better? What about his neighbors he's also inadvertently exposing to risk?

@pookiesorcery@mastodon.social @nilz@norden.social @tante@tldr.nettime.org As for AI. Sure, it started out as marketing. But is way more than that now. Way more than it's owners suspect, I bet. Quick side question though. Under WHAT outlandish circumstances has EVER led you to believe the framing around AI was scientific? Not in this reality. It was just speculation until a few years ago. Pure Science fiction. As for propiganda....You aren't in a position to bitch, are you? Total ignorance on the topic puts you on the same par. Do better.

@pixelscience@mastodon.social @skeletor@mas.to Don't think bayonets played much role in WW II. Certainly not in the European theater at any rate. Appreciate the sentiment though. My granpaps took down 11 nazis personally. I look forward to beating his record when the fireworks start soon.
