**@小明@範例.測試, or, Fediverse handles in every language**
is the proposal I just submitted to @COSCUP@floss.social . Abstract:

A person's handle is their name and address on the Fediverse. But despite people on using the Fediverse in many languages from all over the world, almost all handles are limited to Latin script letters and numbers: **@somebody@example.com** . Instead, people should be able to use a handle in their own language and characters, e.g. **@小明@範例.測試** or **@김@예시.테스트**. We call this "globally inclusive Fediverse handles".

This talk explains the reasons why handles are now limited…. We look at the role of specifications, and existing software…. We look at the history of internationalising other address types such as email addresses ( जिम@डाटामेल.भारत ) and domain names ( http://ยูเอทดสอบ.ไทย ). We list some rules from DNS, Unicode, and IETF…: the Fediverse can build on them.

We propose a path forward….

#GloballyInclusiveHandles #GloballyInclusiveFediverse #i18n
Thank you @hongminhee@hollo.social for your encouragement!

A cool change is that the Core Specification of the Unicode Standard is now released as a static HTML subsite, backed up by an archiveable #PDF of 1,140 pages. https://unicode.org/versions/Unicode16.0.0/core-spec/ You can now link to specific sections and paragraphs, e.g. "Unicode is about plain text, see: https://unicode.org/versions/Unicode16.0.0/core-spec/chapter-2/#G642" . I helped out in a small way with the project to produce the core spec as HTML + PDF. I think it is a marvellous improvement. #18n #fonts #PDF #unicode

I want some generic human names to use as examples in a talk. For English, I would use Jane, John, Alice, Bob, Pat, Kim, etc. What are similar common, generic names in 繁體字 , 简化字 , 한글 , 和文 , อักษรไทย , देवनागरी , and other non-Latin scripts? #i18n #GloballyInclusive #Fediverse @COSCUP

Terence @Edent@mastodon.social, Jason @north@xn--8r9a.com, Hong @hongminhee@hollo.social, I appreciate your steps in #i18n for #FediVerse. Do you plan to attend #FediForum next week (28-30 April, 15-20h UTC)? I will propose a session on "#Globally-inclusive Fediverse handles". If you were present, it would improve the session. I think Philip Patsch @Profpatsch@mastodon.xyz will demo too. https://fediforum.org/2026-04/ #UniversalAcceptance #Multilingual

@hongminhee@hollo.social @liaizon@social.wake.st @Edent@mastodon.social @north@xn--8r9a.com @Profpatsch@mastodon.xyz (1/3) Report back from #FediForum last week. Held a good session on #GloballyInclusive handles. Just a few attendees, but one knew the technical issues deeply and was well connected to ActivityPub design. Session notes will likely appear at https://fediforum.org/topics/#topic-internationalization in a few weeks. For now, here is a summary: #i18n #GloballyInclusiveFediverse #Fediverse #Multilingual

RE: @404mediaco@mastodon.social

Wonderful reporting by @404mediaco@mastodon.social . I recommend watching the video they link to. It is delicious; tastes almost like #AI-using lawyers facing accountability.

@sarajw@front-end.social thank you! I agree, making our tech #GloballyInclusive of handles and personal names and pronouns and email addresses and language are all related. A bonus: finding @yournameisinvalid@mas.to 's home on the #Fediverse!

@sarajw@front-end.social I am in another part of the Inclusive Front. I am adopting the term #GloballyInclusive to mean, treating handles and URLs and hashtags of all the world's languages as well as those of Latin script and Western European languages are treated. Sometimes they are called "non-ASCII" handles or "#Unicode" URLs. #GloballyInclusiveHandles #GloballyInclusiveFediverse #multilingual

@hongminhee @liaizon @Edent @north @Profpatsch @COSCUP great idea! The COSCUP 2026 folks have more to gain from a #GloballyInclusiveFediverse than do North Americans. Down side for me personally: I don't travel much these days. But nothing is impossible. #i18n #GloballyInclusive #fediverse #Multilingual

@liaizon@social.wake.st @Edent@mastodon.social @north@xn--8r9a.com @Profpatsch@mastodon.xyz @hongminhee@hollo.social I am happy to discuss #GloballyInclusiveFediverse at some other time and venue. #FediForum is just a useful forcing function for me. As a start, is there a keyword and hashtag we can agree on to make this topic more discoverable? I obviously like #GloballyInclusive but maybe another word is in use already.

@hongminhee@hollo.social I will definitely post about the session. I realise that for people in a UTC+9 time zone, UTC 15-20h is about the worst possible time for a meeting. 🙂

@gunchleoc@mastodon.scot @ChristineMalec@mstdn.ca

A PDF with the score, but it's a paid download, so I have no idea how accessible the content is: https://imslp.org/wiki/Kantate_auf_Maria_Theresia_von_Paradis_(Kozeluch,_Leopold)

That is a free download, but the site makes one wait a few seconds before the download proceeds. The score itself is in the public domain (in Canada, probably worldwide). The resulting PDF contains 15 pages of images of scanned pages. There are no text objects for a screen-reader to read.

Would it help you to have a transcription of this score into MusicXML? Doing that is a hobby of mine. I can't promise it fast, but it would be fun to do.

@libreoffice@fosstodon.org Thank you for the 26.2.2 release! However, there is a broken link on the https://www.libreoffice.org/download/ page: the macOS AArch64 link reads "LibreOffice_26.2.2_MacOS_aarch64.dmg.msi.torrent", but no such file exists. The link should read "LibreOffice_26.2.2_MacOS_aarch64.dmg.torrent".

@north @Edent @Profpatsch @hongminhee @liaizon re "a time… that works for everybody", I am in UTC-7 time zone. If I read rightly, this group already includes people in UTC+1 and UTC+9. That means probably no time will be waking hours for everybody. It is hard being #GloballyInclusive ! :-) But we do have access to asynchronous collaboration tools.

@agnes@pdx.social Good point. But consider whose convenience you are centring. It is the person who 1) can't read my language and 2) wants to communicate _between_ language communities. Consider instead the grandparent who reads my language, but not English, and wants to communicate _within_ their language community. (And, Thai or Arabic may be better examples than Japanese, because they use Latin letters less.) For them, a handle which they can easily read and type is much easier than a foreign one they have to decode. And I suspect that communication within language communities is much more common than between language communities. "Inclusive" means including more people when designing systems. Even people not like the designers.

@wbpeckham@techhub.social sigh, I feel your pain. There is a lot of legacy about. But the real old-school ASCII will be 7-bit, not 8-bit. Fun fact: any data which is ASCII-compliant is also Unicode UTF-8 compliant, because the latter is by design a subset of the former. So, you probably use UTF-8 all the time! :-)
