So we are going to have the Email-Problem sooner or later. Sending Spam is for free and infinitely scalable. In order to combat this, we need to add friction to posting. The most obvious solution here is to add transaction cost in addition to moderation. “you can only send me a message if you pay me 1ct” for example. In systems like Twitter this was a hidden cost layer that active background moderation fixed, which is why Musk’s X is overrun by spam. #fedidev

I'm thinking of replying in a blog post as someone who has spent the last three months actively developing a fediverse application (#flohmarkt). But the most critical thought: I miss a discussion about reducing implementation complexity as much as possible. The standards leave much "wiggle room" for implementation, which I think is partly to blame for the "whack a mole" nature of support

@evan if you've ever scrolled through #motorcycle you've seen a bunch of gay porn posters for example, and there is no way to say "I don't want this part of motorcycle posts to show up on my timeline" apart from manually muting them or defederating entirely. This gets worse the bigger the fediverse is (plus large tags become impossible to follow)

@uriel@x.keinpfusch.net @strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz Oh but that’s not true; from the top of my head the receiver can: 1) drop the information entirely because it does not want to interact with likes 2) accept it and store it somewhere 3) drop it on the floor because the sender is on a blocklist And probably a few more that are entirely valid. There is no real “predictableness” to it, and that’s a good design, because AP is precisely *not* an RPC system, but a distributed system based on “common conventions”

@uriel@keinpfusch.net @strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz Yeah, I totally agree that we will need some negotiation capabilities at some point, but I’m doubtful RPC brings anything to the table that normal web standards can’t solve. e.g. the main use-case would be if a server wants to send type NewEvent or type Article and falls back to a Note if the other side does not support it (yet). Maybe gRPC has some mechanisms for including such negotiation, but not all languages have an implementation, whereas everyone speaks json and HTTP

@lina@vt.social All of these refactoring tools are proprietary or internal to the companies (and dependent on their setups) though. So you need a company with $10 million in spare to design such a tool and apply it. Saying LLMs don’t improve the situation here is completely removed from reality!

Implementation-wise it’s also very cool that we produce a single static binary now. We can do tricks like use the lorri binary inside the wrapper drv nix code, and all we need to do is pass $0 as a path to the nix expression (it will be copied to the store and has no runtime dependencies). Stuff that would be so, so much more complicated if there were dynamic libraries attached like they are with rust.

@evan To elaborate: Scale of followed hashtag posts: 2/day: cool, but could be a little more 5/day: nice 20/day: A bit much, but could be an event happening so fine 200/day: oh no This is why hashtags became completely obsolete on e.g. twitter, and I guess also why Bluesky is going for algorithmic timelines. And, like, I’m not even talking about grifters or spammers abusing the system here (which are gonna happen because of how hashtags really boost visibility)

@uriel@x.keinpfusch.net @strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz I don't understand how you make the jump to remote procedure calls? ActivityPub is everything but a remote procedure call, the other side is its own identity with its own policies about what to accept and how to process it. The definition of an RPC system is that the caller has control over the callee, just that they are talking over the network instead of the same process space

@uriel@x.keinpfusch.net @strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz Okay, I guess if you are only talking about the pure serialization part of the interface, but that’s imo the least interesting aspect of AP. You can’t specify a multi-step process like Mastodon’s Quote post requests in pure gRPCs, because that’s a multi-step interaction with many policy decisions on each transition of the state machine

@mindpersephone @quixoticgeek The question here is if there’s a market to this much compute, do you think the average person will consume an extra 1kW for inference in 2030? Maybe in the US where natural gas is free right now.

> First of all, in real life, in contrast to a computer game, there is no "victory" desirable to be achieved. Neither by an individual, a company, a nation or whomever. Life goes on forever on this planet as long as the sun is shining. We are all gonna die some day (deal with it), and want to have a good time while we're on earth (hopefully) alive and kickin'.
