Just another periodic squirt of gratitude for all you lovely alt text writers. As a Blind person you send me slices of the world I'd never otherwise have, insects, mushrooms, birds, cats, graffiti, landscapes, glimpses into your homes or your art, and not because you have to or are paid to, just cause you choose to. You are the resistance.

I'm a busker and arts creator, and income precarity is my middle name, so here's a link if you feel moved to make a one-time donation, just as though you were dropping cash in my guitar case, without experiencing the griminess of a downtown subway station:

🎧 YouTube link to the recording of NASA's first virtual event targeted for the Blind and Low Vision Community. This two hour presentation is about the SLS rocket tests for the rockets that power the Artimis space craft. There’s a never before heard excerpt of conversation between astronauts on the far side of the moon, audio described video of a launch, some hard science, and a great panel discussion about space, astronomy and accessibility.

Mastodonians, I'm going to be trapped in Nanaimo BC between Oct. 7 and 13 visiting in-laws who have narrow lives, don't like each other, and watch a lot of TV. As a Blind person even just going out for a walk on my own is more stressful than relaxing. I'm looking for rescue plans, to connect with folk who might want to walk or hike, who know about any live music or music jams, or who I could claim to be acquainted with on social media and want to meet in person for a coffee. If the stars align I'll get away to the mainland to spend Saturday and Sunday with my brother, but would love to find sanity saving escape strategies for an hour or 3 at a time on other days. No ax murderers please.

My colleague and I are trying to work a grant angle to bring two players/builders to teach and perform in Toronto. Research suggests there isn't a glass harmonica in Canada. Does anyone know differently?

@DXMacGuffin@metalhead.club I read it a long time ago and don't remember that, so it may be the sin of lying we're dealing with, but if the fart into the trumpet did happen, I think we'd have to go with bean gluttony combined with JazzFlatulence, the latter having been defined by Pope Corpulent VI

@barubary@infosec.exchange No, emojes have little built in alt texts, like, "winking face" or "Woman doing a cartwheel," and you can generally set your screen reader to not speak punctuation or caps. Camel case is always appreciated though, #AltTextWritersRock

@petes_bread_eqn_xls@mastodo.neoliber.al Yes, it's all about the framing. Related, I'm a busker in the subway and yesterday after 2 hours of singing I was leaving, and one of the staff I passed stopped me and told me that my voice calmed her. When things got chaotic she would listen to me and feel better. Wow was that a compliment I enjoyed. Be the peace we want to see in the world.

@LALegault@newsie.social It's also an assisted living device for blind people living independantly; I use it daily to increase my self-reliance in ways I never thought possible. I understand the context but I can't refuse a tool that offers me so much freedom.

@WrenArcher@beige.party Teehee! I just came back from my first ever "public screening of a film in the park" night, many hundreds of folk, watching Oh Brother Where Art Thou! It was fantastic! It's been so long since I'd seen it that it was fun to laugh at the stuff I'd forgotten.

Okay so does anyone else insert cotton swabs deep into your ear and experience transitory but intense bliss? I know it's wrong, and please don't distress me with examples of how, just let me savor the bliss. p.s. My Dr. always says my ears look great on the inside.

@anon_opin@mastodon.social Wow! This is true! I got feedback on early stories from someone who was more or less an expert on the place and period my stories were set in. We had an ongoing, incredibly fruitful correspondence that helped me immeasurably in writing the book that the stories were a prequel to. I've never heard this experience mirrored, so thanks. And now that I think about it, I did get welcome feedback on spelling etc. I guess it's an uncommonly engaged audience.

“Free As a Bird,” Good Lovelies cover.
New strings and an absurdly profitable afternoon at my favourite subway station. Thanks generous Torontonians! Could have done well without the prayer card in my case though; drug pushing is probably illegal in the TTC. And yet, I was tickled by the single, wrapped hard candy.

I'm sorry to part digital ways because I really appreciate most of your posts, but being flip about the lived experience of someone who is doing their best living with a serious disability isn't helpful for me to encounter on my timeline. Keep up the good fight against gread and evil.

@adhdeanasl@beige.party I have a little singing gig in a few weeks and I was asked to submit my lyrics for the ASL Interpreter. I know you probably don't know, but do you think the interpreter will Sign Sing, I guess I mean by that, give special cadence to the signs, draw some out or emote or something? Still not fluent on what sign singing is, but excited that I'll be translated; is that the right word?
