My first day participating in #weekofpatching (day 2). I'm quite rusty so opted for something similar using vcv rack with the #monome grid sequencer, and an analog video synth for visuals. I filmed a whole 10-minute performance but I'm gonna have to edit and retroactively post about the process on my blog as I'm off to a gig! #vcvrack #cardinal #analog #videosynthesis

Do people who make stuff using VCV Rack have a patch or module setup that they use regularly or do you create one for each new project? #vcvrack #cardinal

You can see an early version of it and read more about the concept in this unlisted video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVLAaqTTO64 For future version I want to do a bit more beat mangling and scratching. Really glad that @mixxx@floss.social has configurable midi input to make this who thing possible! #tidalcycles #livecoding #djing

The recentish popularity of TouchDesigner has certainly brought with it a lot of interest in node-based editors for graphics. Here's a few open source cross-platform tools that I've used: Cables.gl @cables_gl https://cables.gl/ ( what I used to make the animation) Coollab @Coollab https://coollab-art.com/ Material Maker @rodzilla https://www.materialmaker.org/ Pixieditor https://pixieditor.net/ Plugdata/PureData + GEM https://plugdata.org/ Graphite https://www.graphite.art/ Each serves different purposes and does things in different ways. For example, all of the above software can render animations but Graphite and Pixieditor aren't really for live visuals.

Cables is a tool for creating beautiful interactive content. With an easy to navigate interface and real time visuals, it allows for rapid prototyping and fast adjustments.

As suggested by @oin I imported the jxr image into audacity (U-Law, default endianness). The image is only 256x256 but it's overstuffed with data (i.e. past its actual resolution) so the file size is around 300kb and means I can have much longer audio. Enjoy(?) #sonfication #databending #creativecoding #noise

jxr is still one of my favourite image file formats to work with. I still need to read the file spec and work out what a "vanilla" image header looks like.

@yaxu The licence violations are what get me the most when it comes to AI and code. People thinking that just because the source is available anything goes.

Did a couple test prints for some tiny zines which I'll be printing and handing out at some upcoming Algoraves.

@lown@hachyderm.io wrote an ace script for doing the imposition for a 16-page tiny zine from a single A4 paper https://raphaelkabo.com/blog/tiny-zines-script/

And there's a script for an eight-page slightly bigger zine here https://1klb.com/posts/2020/04/27/making-zines-with-pdfjam/ I think I'll do those eventually too.

Here's another one. It's so interesting how the same process can look different depending on the file type I was going to finish this project in time for @alpaca last year but didn't. I promise to exhibit this soon! I need to work out how this looks on bigger file sizes, and maybe even mixing in existing images. #creativecoding

Looks like some lossy file types don't have very obvious repeating patterns. This is the qoi file format (literally means Quite OK Image). I think I need to make these images have larger resolution so the data doesn't fill up so quickly. I'll also one day document my process but not right now. #creativecoding

Also I didn't include TiXL as it currently only natively runs on Windows. Linux support is possible via wine but has all the caveats of of using software on wine. TiXL https://tixl.app/

@jonty not just gen z doing that. I curated a whole exhibition in 2017 about Millenials and older doing the same copyright infringement. I attribute the lax attitude to copyright to the frictionlessness of being able to see anything and immediately take it. There's licences but nothing forcing you to understand it before you engage with the content or code. @yaxu

@trashpandaqc The offline version - and electron apps in general - are basically web apps packaged in a chromium browser, so they still have the browser baggage. Again, I'm probably being unfair based on some past experiences, but I usually find native desktop software to have better performance. With that said I'm so far impressed with cablegl's performance @emenel

@emenel that's definitely been my main motivation for using open source software. For sure the proprietary and expensive stuff has its place but I'm thankful that there's perfectly cromulent alternatives for people just starting in this area @trashpandaqc
